1. DESCRIPTION
Viking Mirage
®
Standard and Quick Response Concealed Pendent Sprinkler VK462
and HP Sprinkler VK463 are thermosensitive glass-bulb spray sprinklers designed for
installation on concealed pipe systems where the appearance of a smooth ceiling is
desired.
The sprinkler is pre-assembled with a threaded adapter for installation with a low-
profile cover assembly that provides up to ½” (12.7 mm) of vertical adjustment. The
two-piece design allows installation and testing of the sprinkler prior to installation of
the cover plate. The “The “push-on” and “thread-on” designs of the concealed cover
plate assemblies allow easy installation of the cover plate after the system has been
tested and the ceiling finish has been applied. The cover assembly can be removed
and reinstalled, allowing temporary removal of ceiling panels without taking the sprinkler
system out of service or removing the sprinkler. The Electroless Nickel PTFE (ENT)
coating has been investigated for installation in corrosive environments and is listed and
approved as indicated in the Approval Charts. The ENT finish is only available for the
sprinkler assembly, the cover plate is not plated.

Overview

The Viking Mirage® Standard and QR Concealed Pendent Sprinklers VK462 and HP Sprinkler VK463 (K5.6) are fire protection devices designed to activate and distribute water in a specific pattern to extinguish or control fires. These sprinklers are available in various models and styles, offering flexibility for different installation requirements and aesthetic preferences.

Function Description:

Viking fire sprinklers consist of a threaded frame, a specific waterway or orifice size, and a deflector. A closed or sealed sprinkler includes a thermosensitive operating element that activates at a predetermined temperature, releasing water. An open sprinkler, conversely, does not use an operating element and is open at all times, relying on a separate detection system for water release. The primary function is to distribute water in a controlled spray pattern to suppress fires.

The Mirage® concealed pendent sprinklers are designed for aesthetic integration into ceilings. They feature a cover plate assembly that conceals the sprinkler until activation. The cover plate is held in place by a fusible element that detaches when exposed to sufficient heat, allowing the sprinkler to drop down and activate. The cover plate assembly consists of a cover plate, a support cup, and a fusible element. The cover plate is available in various finishes and temperature ratings to match interior designs and environmental conditions.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Some models are available with corrosion-resistant coatings or are fabricated from non-corrosive material. Specific models (e.g., 13503JN, 13667JN) are cULus Listed as corrosion resistant. Wax-coated sprinklers are available for enhanced corrosion resistance, with specific wax part numbers and melting points.

Usage Features:

  • Concealed Design: The concealed design allows the sprinkler to blend seamlessly with the ceiling, providing an aesthetically pleasing solution for fire protection. The cover plate is designed to be flush with the ceiling.
  • Quick Response (QR) and Standard Response (SR) Options: Both quick response and standard response models are available, allowing selection based on specific fire protection requirements and occupancy classifications. Quick response sprinklers are designed to activate faster than standard response sprinklers, which can be critical in certain applications.
  • Pendent Installation: These sprinklers are designed for pendent installation, meaning they hang down from the piping. The deflector is positioned below the frame to distribute water in a downward, umbrella-shaped spray pattern.
  • Installation Flexibility: The sprinklers are suitable for installation in neutral or negative pressure plenums only. VdS approval specifically prohibits installation in false ceilings where the void above contains a water-based active fire protection system.
  • Cover Plate Ordering: A clear ordering system is provided for cover plates, allowing users to select the base part number, desired finish, and required temperature rating. This ensures compatibility and proper aesthetic integration.
  • Installation Steps:
    1. Prepare the sprinkler key.
    2. Remove the plastic cover.
    3. Hold the sprinkler with the wrench and fasten it.
    4. Replace the plastic cover and do not remove until the cover is installed. The installation requires a 2-1/4" (57 mm) diameter opening in the ceiling. The sprinkler wrench (Part No. 14047W/B**) is specifically designed for installation, ensuring proper torque and preventing damage.
  • Residential Sprinklers: While the document primarily focuses on standard and QR concealed pendent sprinklers, it notes that residential sprinklers have a unique distribution pattern and fast-response operating element, designed for life safety. They should not be used to replace standard sprinklers unless specifically tested and approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Wax-Coated Sprinklers: For wax-coated sprinklers, a special sprinkler head wrench is required for installation to avoid damaging the wax coating. Wax is also available in bar form for touch-ups after installation to maintain corrosion resistance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Care and Handling: Sprinklers are fragile and must be handled with care during storage, transport, handling, and installation. They should be stored in a cool, dry place in their original shipping containers, separated to prevent metal parts from contacting operating elements.
  • Protective Shields and Caps: Many Viking sprinklers come with plastic protective caps or shields to temporarily cover operating elements, preventing mechanical damage. These shields/caps MUST be removed BEFORE placing the system in service and only after installation and ceiling finish work are complete. Removal should be done carefully, without tools, to avoid damaging the sprinkler.
  • Installation Tools: Only the designated sprinkler head wrench should be used for installation to prevent damage to the sprinkler. Over-tightening should be avoided.
  • Damage Prevention: Sprinklers that have been dropped, damaged, painted in the field, or exposed to temperatures exceeding their maximum ambient limit must be replaced. Cleaning sprinklers with soap, water, ammonia, or other cleaning fluids, or using adhesives/solvents on them, is prohibited.
  • Inspections, Tests, and Maintenance: Regular inspections, tests, and maintenance should be performed in accordance with NFPA 25 requirements. For wax-coated sprinklers, frequent inspections are necessary to verify the integrity of the corrosion-resistant coating.
  • Technical Data Access: Comprehensive technical data pages, installation instructions, and care and handling bulletins are available from Viking or its distributors and on the Viking website (www.vikinggroupinc.com). These resources provide detailed information for proper installation and maintenance.
  • Regulatory Warnings: The product includes regulatory and health warnings, particularly regarding chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm in California (www.P65Warnings.ca.gov).
