Oil return system – While the compressor is running, it will slowly loose oil through the compressor
discharge line. This oil will travel through the system and eventually accumulate in the surge drum. This
oil must then be returned to the compressor.
This is accomplished by letting the oil separate from the refrigerant in the surge drum. Oil is then drained
through the filter into a small reservoir. From there, the oil returns through a direct acting solenoid to
the suction line.
While the ice machine is in the harvest, the oil return valve is closed. At this time, oil will accumulate in
the oil reservoir. If oil is returning properly, the oil will fill to the top sight glass.
Note: if oil is not accumulating in the reservoir during the harvest, the oil filter needs to be changed. When
the ice machine goes back into a freeze cycle, the oil return valve will open and oil will flow into the suction
line and into the compressor.
