Overview

This document serves as a user manual for Volta Electric Pedal Assisted Cycles, specifically covering models VB1, VB2, and VB3. It provides comprehensive instructions for operation, safety, maintenance, and storage of these high-tech, environment-friendly vehicles.

Function Description

Volta Electric Pedal Assisted Cycles are designed to offer an enjoyable and comfortable riding experience with the aid of an electric motor. The core functionality revolves around a high-efficiency direct current brushless motor, managed by a low-voltage protected digital smart driver. This system provides pedal assistance, meaning the electric motor augments the rider's pedaling effort, making cycling easier, especially on inclines or over long distances.

A key feature is the LCD display, which serves as the primary interface for the rider. It shows essential information such as current speed (in MPH or KM/H), remaining battery charge, total range (ODO), single trip range, voltage, and operation period. The display also indicates error codes, headlamp status, brake activation, start-up support assistant status, and battery warnings.

The control system allows for various adjustments, including rim diameter, idle period, rear lamp brightness, starting mode, rider mode, voltage level, and rider current limit. Riders can also select different levels of electric bicycle support (1, 2, or 3) to customize the assistance provided by the motor. The communication type is UART, ensuring reliable data exchange between the display and the controller.

The bikes feature a thumb throttle, which provides initial assistance from 0-6 km/h, located on the start-up support lever handlebar. This helps in getting the bike moving smoothly. Shifters are integrated for manual gear selection, allowing riders to choose the appropriate gear ratio for different terrains and speeds.

Safety features include a circuit breaker brake sensor for safe riding, ensuring that motor assistance is cut off when the brakes are applied. The bikes are equipped with disc brakes for effective stopping power.

Usage Features

The manual emphasizes careful reading before using the electric pedal assisted cycle. Before each ride, users are instructed to check tire air pressure, ensure sufficient battery charge, verify brake functionality, adjust handlebar height relative to the seat, and confirm that front and rear wheels are smooth and fixed.

The bikes are designed for ease of use, with a power switch located on the battery to activate the electric system. The "ON" position enables the engine, while "OFF" locks the battery and deactivates the system. The battery can be removed for charging by turning the switch to "Open Lock."

Folding mechanisms are a significant usage feature for models VB1 and VB2, allowing for compact storage and transport. The process involves fixing the vehicle, opening the folding apparatus, folding the handlebars towards the front wheel, and then opening a second folding latch on the frame to fold the entire vehicle. Model VB3 does not have a folding characteristic.

Riding instructions highlight the importance of wearing a helmet and avoiding riding in heavy rain or deep waters to prevent damage. Users are advised not to touch the battery with wet hands or metal objects to prevent electric shock or short circuits. Sudden acceleration should be avoided by slowly turning the starting support arm. When stopping, riders should slowly pull the accelerator and brake lever; pulling the brake lever automatically stops the start support assistant.

The LCD display allows for easy interaction: a short press of the ON/OFF button turns on the indicator and cycles through ODO, TRIP, RM, TM, and ERRO modes. A long press turns off the indicator. PAS levels can be increased or decreased with short presses of the up (+) or down (-) buttons. Parameter adjustments are made by long-pressing the (+) button, then using the ON/OFF button to change parameters and the MODE button to add or subtract values.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Volta Electric Pedal Assisted Cycles. The manual provides detailed guidelines for storage, charging, and cleaning.

Storage: Electric bikes should be stored away from cold environments, ideally in a garage. Batteries should be kept away from children and protected from extreme temperatures (above 60°C or below -20°C) and physical impacts (hitting, throwing, falling). It's important not to connect the anode and cathode while the charger is on, and never use conductors between them to avoid short circuits. Batteries should not be tampered with sharp tools. In case of a battery leak, immediate washing with plenty of water and medical consultation are advised. Any physical changes in the battery (odor, heating, burning, color change) require immediate removal from the vehicle.

For long-term storage, especially during winter months, specific measures are recommended:

  • Clean, rinse, and dry the electric bicycle.
  • Apply oil to painted surfaces to extend paint life and maintain brightness.
  • Adjust tire pressure to the ideal level.
  • Place a wood block under the front and back wheels to lift them off the ground by raising the middle pedal.
  • Cover the bike with a quilt (not plastic or rubber) and store it in an area with stable temperature to prevent tiring, impairing, and cracking of parts.

Charging: The battery charge socket is located on the upper part of the battery. Users should plug the charger cable into the battery's charge socket and then into a correct electric socket (220V 50Hz). The battery charge indicator flashes RED during charging and turns GREEN when fully charged. Charging time typically ranges from 2-8 hours. It is crucial to always connect the charging cable with the charger turned off. The battery should be charged when its level is low, ideally around 20%. Only the original charger designed for the product should be used, operating at 220V and never lowered to 110V. The electric bicycle should be off during charging, and it should not be shaken.

Cleaning: Never use very high-pressure water when washing the electric machine, as this can cause water to enter electrical parts, leading to performance loss and breakage. It is recommended to clean the electric bike with water and avoid alcohol, petrol, kerosene, or other corrosive/volatile solutions, which can cause serious damage. The electric bike must be turned off during washing and should not be operated until it is 100% dry to prevent electric shock. The charger should be removed from the device and the socket after each charge, and stored in a safe, dry place.

General Maintenance: Regular checks include ensuring all parts are in good condition, bolts are tightened, and brakes are operational and adjusted. Brake cables and levers should be well lubricated and free of oil. Worn tires and brake pads should be replaced. Brake cables require regular adjustment and tightening as they wear over time. The battery should be wiped regularly with a dry soft cloth to prevent weak links that can decrease capacity. All rotating parts should be checked and lubricated if insufficient. All lighting systems should be checked.

The manual also warns against using different brands of batteries, opening or disassembling the battery, or tampering with it using metal objects to avoid electric shock or short circuits. The battery should be used with the original charger to prevent problems and firing. Batteries are recyclable and should be returned to authorized service points at the end of their service life.
