Overview

This manual describes the operation and care of the 2000 Volvo S & V 40. It provides comprehensive information for owners to ensure safe driving, proper maintenance, and optimal performance of their vehicle.

General Information

The manual emphasizes the importance of familiarizing oneself with the vehicle, particularly engine oil consumption and refueling recommendations (pages 58 and 59), as well as the first three chapters covering occupant safety, instruments/controls, and body/interior. It is structured for easy reference and should be kept in the car.

Volvo strongly advises against exporting the vehicle to another country without investigating local safety and emission requirements, as compliance may be difficult or impossible, and modifications could invalidate U.S./Canadian certification.

All information, illustrations, and specifications are based on the latest product data at the time of publication. Volvo reserves the right to make model changes, alter specifications, or modify designs without prior notice or obligation.

Important Features and Systems

Shiftlock

When the car is parked, the gear selector is locked in the (P)ark position. To release it, the ignition key must be in position II (or the engine started), the brake pedal depressed, and the button on the front of the gear selector knob pressed while moving the selector from (P)ark.

Manual Shiftlock Override:

  1. Turn the ignition key to position I.
  2. Press firmly on the "SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE" button at the base of the gear selector.
  3. While holding the override button down, press the button on the front of the gear selector.
  4. Move the selector from the (P)ark position.

Keylock

The ignition key can only be removed when the gear selector is in the (P)ark position.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

The ABS system performs a self-diagnostic test when the vehicle reaches approximately 12 mph (20 km/h). During this test, the brake pedal may pulsate, and a sound might be audible from the ABS control module, which is normal.

Fuel Filler Door

The fuel filler door locks automatically with a 10-minute delay when the doors are locked. It unlocks when any door is unlocked using the key, keyless remote, or the dashboard door lock button. To open, press the forward edge of the door.

Volvo and the Environment

Volvo is committed to environmental responsibility, adopting a holistic view that considers a product's entire life cycle: design, production, use, and recycling.

Production: Volvo has significantly reduced or phased out several chemicals (e.g., freons, lead chromates, naphthenates, asbestos, mercury, cadmium) and cut overall chemical use in its plants by 50% since 1991.

Use: Volvo pioneered the three-way catalytic converter with a Lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) in 1976. This system reduces harmful emissions (CO, HC, NOx) by approximately 95%. Volvo also offers CFC-free retrofit kits for air conditioning systems in models as far back as the 1975 240.

Recycling: Metal content accounts for about 75% of a car's total weight, making Volvo cars highly recyclable. Dismantling manuals are provided for many variants, detailing component weights and materials. All homogeneous plastic parts weighing over 1.7 oz (50 grams) are marked with international symbols for proper sorting.

Owner Actions to Reduce Environmental Impact:

  • Maintain proper tire air pressure to improve fuel economy.
  • Follow the recommended maintenance schedule.
  • Drive at a constant speed.
  • Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Volvo retailer if the "check engine" lamp illuminates.
  • Properly dispose of vehicle-related waste (e.g., used motor oil, batteries, brake pads).
  • Use Volvo's environmentally adapted car care products.

Occupant Safety

Volvo emphasizes the critical importance of seat belt usage for all occupants and proper child restraint. WARNING: No child should sit in the front seat, and no one under 4 feet 7 inches should ride as a passenger in the front seat of any vehicle equipped with a passenger-side airbag.

Legislation: Most states and provinces mandate seat belt usage and child restraint.

Seat Belts

Function: Two lights above the rear-view mirror illuminate for 4-8 seconds after the ignition key is turned to the driving position. A chime sounds if the driver's seat belt is not fastened. Rear seats have self-retracting inertial reel belts; front seats have single roller belts with tensioners.

To Buckle:

  1. Pull the belt out to insert the latch plate into the receptacle until it clicks.
  2. The retractor is normally "unlocked," allowing free movement, but locks under rapid belt pull, braking/acceleration, excessive vehicle leaning, or during turns.

Correct Wear for Maximum Protection:

  • The belt should not be twisted.
  • The lap belt must be positioned low on the hips, not pressing the abdomen.
  • The front shoulder belt automatically adjusts to the driver's height.
  • Ensure the shoulder belt is rolled into its retractor and both lap and shoulder belts are taut.
  • After unbuckling, ensure the belt retracts fully; guide it if necessary.

WARNING:

  • Any device that introduces slack into the shoulder belt compromises protection.
  • The seat back should not be tilted too far back; the shoulder belt must be taut.
  • Never use child safety seats or booster cushions/backrests in the front passenger's seat. Children who have outgrown these devices should sit in the rear seat with the seat belt properly fastened.
  • Never use a seat belt for more than one occupant.
  • Never wear the shoulder portion of the belt under the arm, behind the back, or out of position, as this can cause injury.
  • Seat belts lose strength after violent stretching and must be replaced after any collision, even if they appear undamaged. Repairs must be done by an authorized Volvo retailer.

During Pregnancy

Pregnant women should always wear seat belts, ensuring the lap portion is positioned low on the hips to avoid pressure on the abdomen.

Rear Head Restraints

Rear head restraints are adjustable to the passenger's height to support the head. They can be raised by pulling straight up or lowered by pressing catch (1) at the base of the left head restraint support and pushing down.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) - Volvo SRS

Function: The SRS supplements the three-point seat belt system. It includes airbags (2) for the driver and passenger, and seat belt tensioners (4) in both front door pillars. Indication: "SRS" embossed on the steering wheel pad, above the glove compartment, and on sun visors and the far right side of the dash.

Airbag Deployment:

  • Airbags are folded in the steering wheel hub and above the glove compartment.
  • Designed to deploy during certain frontal or front-angular collisions, impacts, or decelerations, depending on crash severity, angle, speed, and object impacted.
  • May also deploy in certain non-frontal collisions with rapid deceleration.
  • Gas generators (1) activate, inflating airbags with nitrogen gas.
  • As occupants compress airbags, gas is expelled at a controlled rate for cushioning.
  • Both front seat belt tensioners deploy to minimize seat belt slack.
  • The entire process (inflation and deflation) takes approximately two-tenths of a second.

WARNING:

  • SRS is a SUPPLEMENT to, not a replacement for, the three-point belt system. Always wear seat belts for maximum protection.
  • Do not damage the SRS system when installing optional equipment.
  • Do not attempt to service any SRS component yourself; this can cause serious personal injury. If problems arise, take the car to an authorized Volvo retailer.
  • Never drive with hands on the steering wheel pad/airbag housing.
  • No objects, accessory equipment, or stickers should be placed on, attached to, or installed near the SRS cover in the steering wheel, above the glove compartment, or in the airbag deployment area.
  • Do not use child safety seats or booster cushions/backrests in the front passenger's seat. Children who have outgrown these devices should sit in the rear seat with the seat belt properly fastened.

Self-Diagnostic System:

  • A sensor monitors the SRS. If a fault is detected, the "SRS" warning light in the instrument panel will illuminate.
  • The SRS warning lamp should light up when the ignition is switched on and go out after 5 seconds or when the engine starts. Check this light every time the car is started.
  • If the SRS warning light stays on after starting or comes on while driving, take the car to an authorized Volvo retailer immediately.

Monitored Items:

  • Sensor unit
  • Cable harness
  • Gas generator igniters

Maintenance:

  • There is no owner maintenance for the SRS.
  • A decal on the door pillar indicates when specific servicing or replacement of airbags and seatbelt tensioners is due. This service must be performed by an authorized Volvo retailer.
