Overview

This document describes the VonHaus 3500230 40V Cordless Pole Chainsaw, a power tool designed for domestic use.

Function Description

The VonHaus 3500230 is a 40V Cordless Pole Chainsaw primarily intended for cutting wood. It features a saw head connection, a saw chain, and a guide bar, allowing for the cutting of small to larger branches. The pole design allows for extended reach, and the saw head angle is adjustable (20° to 40°) for versatile cutting positions. It is powered by a 40V Lithium-ion battery pack.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Battery Rating: 40V MAX, 4000mAh
  • Charger Input: 220V-240V 50/60Hz, 100W
  • Charger Output: 42V, 2.0Ah
  • Chain Type: 40 drive link 9.84 Inches chain (recommended for replacement)
  • Charging Temperature: 20°C/68°F to 25°C/77°F
  • Charging Time: Approximately 60 minutes for a full charge.

Usage Features

Safety Precautions:

  • General Safety: Always read all instructions carefully before use and retain for future reference. Wear personal protective equipment including safety goggles (complying with ANSI Z87.1), non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, hearing protection, and heavy-duty work gloves. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Prevent unintentional starting by ensuring the switch is in the off position before connecting to power or battery. Do not operate in explosive atmospheres or wet conditions. Keep children and bystanders away.
  • Sharp Edges: CAUTION: Sharp edges are present.
  • Bystander Distance: Maintain a safe distance from bystanders.
  • Protective Clothing: Protective clothing, footwear, and hand protection must be worn.
  • Kickback: Be aware of kickback, a sudden reverse reaction caused by the guide bar tip touching an object or the chain pinching in a cut. Maintain a firm grip with both hands, brace body and arms, and avoid over-extending or cutting above shoulder height. Always start cuts with the chain already running and never with the tip of the guide bar.
  • Battery Safety: Do not dismantle, open, or shred secondary cells or batteries. Keep batteries out of reach of children. Recharge only with the specified charger. Do not short-circuit or expose to mechanical shock. Remove the battery from the appliance when not in use. Avoid prolonged charging. In case of leakage, avoid skin/eye contact and seek medical advice. Observe polarity marks.
  • Charger Safety: Use indoors only. Position the cable to avoid stepping on or tripping. Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not place objects on the charger or near heat sources. Do not use if damaged. Pull by the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting.

Operation:

  • Assembly: Connect the saw head to the pole.
  • Telescopic Adjustment: Adjust the pole length to suit the size of the hedge to be cut.
  • Angle Adjustment: The saw head can be adjusted to angles between 20° and 40° using the rotate button (2).
  • Starting: Activate the ON/OFF Trigger (15) after disengaging the Lock Off Switch (14).
  • Balance and Working Position: Adjust the shoulder strap (16) for comfort and use the foam grips (11) or pole in conjunction with the rear handle and trigger for better control. Avoid overreaching and maintain proper footing.
  • Cutting Small Branches (0-3 inches): Make cuts from top to bottom. Be aware of early breaking and falling material. Do not stand underneath the branch.
  • Cutting Larger Branches (3-5.9 inches): First make a relief cut (A) from below, then a notch in the upper section (B) until the cuts meet.
  • Sawing Sections: For long branches, cut them into sections to safely manage falling material and avoid tripping hazards.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Cleaning: Keep the work area clean and well lit. Clean air vents using compressed air or a clean dry cloth. Never soak or immerse electrical components.
  • Inspection: Regularly check external nuts and fixings. Inspect for misalignment, binding, breakage, or damage to parts. If damaged, have the power tool repaired by a qualified person.
  • Storage: Store idle power tools out of reach of children, in a dry, locked unit.
  • Cord Care: Ensure the cord is located to prevent stepping on, tripping, or damage.
  • Battery Maintenance: After extended storage, charge and discharge cells several times for maximum performance.

Chain Maintenance:

  • Chain Tensioning: Check chain tension before and during cutting. A cold chain is correctly tensioned when snug but can be turned by hand without binding. Re-tension when flats on drive links hang out of the guide bar. A warm chain should hang approximately 1/16" out of the groove. Adjust tension using the Chain Tension Dial (5). New chains stretch and require adjustment after the first few cuts.
  • Lubrication: Always check the Chain Oil Tank (3) before use. Use good quality Bar and Chain oil. Keep the oil tank filled. Running dry or with too little oil decreases cutting efficiency, shortens chain life, and causes wear and overheating. Wipe off excess oil and replace the Oil Cap (3) tightly.
  • Sprocket Maintenance: The sprocket tips are pre-lubricated. Lubricate the sprocket using a maintenance spray after 25 hours of use or once a week, whichever comes first. Lubricate underneath the sprocket. Thoroughly clean the guide bar sprocket tip before lubrication. It is not necessary to remove the saw chain for lubrication.

Guide Bar Maintenance:

  • General Care: Keep the chainsaw well maintained. Insufficient lubrication or a too-tight chain contributes to rapid bar wear.
  • Oil Way: The guide bar has a small oil way for lubrication oil.
  • Protective Gloves: Always wear protective gloves during maintenance operations. Do not carry out maintenance when the motor unit is hot.

Chain Sharpening:

  • Warning: Improper sharpening increases kickback risk and can cause serious injury.
  • Professional Sharpening: For inexperienced users, professional sharpening is recommended.
  • Manual Sharpening: If sharpening manually, use a 3/16 round hand file and a chain measuring calibre.
  • Cutting Teeth: All cutting teeth must be similarly long; different lengths cause rough running and damage. Minimum length of teeth is 3/16. Follow specified angles and make 2 to 3 pulls from the inside out.
  • Professional Sharpening (Longevity): After 3 to 4 sharpenings, have the chain professionally sharpened for longevity of use.
