Overview

This document describes the Vornado Whole Room Circulator, available in models 270, 279, 573, 673, and 679. This product is designed to circulate air in indoor living spaces, maximizing the performance of heating and cooling systems to save energy. By using a Vornado Air Circulator, users can avoid setting their summertime thermostat as low or their wintertime thermostat as high. The manufacturer provides a 5-year satisfaction guarantee, promising to make it right if the product is not perfect.

Function Description:

The Vornado Whole Room Circulator is an appliance intended to move and circulate air throughout a room. This circulation helps to create a more uniform temperature, reducing hot and cold spots and allowing heating and cooling systems to operate more efficiently. The product is designed for indoor use only in the United States and Canada and is not intended for commercial or industrial applications. Its primary function is to provide consistent air movement, contributing to overall comfort and energy savings.

Usage Features:

The circulator offers multiple speeds to cater to various comfort levels. Models 573, 673, and 679 feature a control knob for adjusting the speed, with settings for OFF, HIGH, MED, and LOW. Models 270 and 279 utilize control buttons with similar speed options: OFF, HIGH, MED, and LOW.

A key feature is the multi-directional airflow, allowing users to direct the airflow precisely where it is desired. This flexibility ensures that air can be circulated effectively in different areas of a room. The design incorporates "finger-friendly" elements, making it resistant to curious fingers and enhancing safety, particularly in households with children.

The circulator is equipped with "Air Inlets," which are signature inlets combined with a powerful motor designed to move a significant volume of air. This design contributes to the product's effectiveness in circulating air throughout an entire room. For stability and to prevent marking surfaces, the circulator includes "Silicon Feet" that are non-marking.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning of the Vornado Whole Room Circulator is essential for optimal performance and longevity. The owner's guide provides detailed instructions for cleaning, emphasizing safety precautions. Before any cleaning, the circulator must be turned off and unplugged from the electrical outlet to reduce the risk of electrical shock and injury. Users should avoid using gasoline, thinners, solvents, ammonias, or other chemicals for cleaning, as these can damage the product.

For models 270 and 279, grille removal for cleaning requires a screwdriver. The process involves removing a screw located at the 6 o'clock position, then rotating the grille counter-clockwise to unlock and lift it off. Reinstallation involves positioning the grille with the logo slightly turned to the left, rotating it clockwise, and replacing the screw.

For models 573, 673, and 679, grille removal also requires a screwdriver. Users need to remove eight screws located around the perimeter of the frame and then lift the grille off. To reinstall, the screw holes must be aligned, and the screws replaced.

Blade removal is also detailed for thorough cleaning, and pliers are required for this process. First, the nut from the shaft must be removed by turning it clockwise to loosen (note that model 573 does not have a nut). Any included washers should be removed and set aside. The blade can then be pulled straight out from the shaft. The blade should be wiped with a damp cloth. For greasy environments, mild soap or a common household cleaner may be used. It is crucial not to use solvents or place the blade in a dishwasher, as excessive heat can distort the plastic. For reattachment, the flat side of the shaft must align directly with the corresponding flat side on the blade's socket. The blade should be pushed all the way onto the shaft until it bottoms out. A hammer should not be used, as this could result in bearing damage. If included, washers and the nut should be reinstalled.

A significant maintenance note is that the motor is permanently lubricated and does not require oiling, simplifying long-term care.

Safety Instructions:

The manual emphasizes several important safety instructions to ensure safe operation and prevent hazards. Users are advised to place the product away from curtains, draperies, tablecloths, and other fabrics to prevent them from being drawn into the product, which could damage the motor or cause a fire. The product should not be placed near furnaces, fireplaces, stoves, or other high-temperature heat sources. It should not be used in a window, on an uneven or unstable surface, or near water.

The appliance, power supply, power cord, and plug must not come into contact with water. The product should not be used on wet surfaces, in a bathtub or shower, or positioned where it could fall into any water container. Outdoor use or exposure to weather elements is prohibited.

The power cord should not be run under carpeting, covered with throw rugs or similar coverings, or routed under furniture or appliances. It must be arranged away from traffic areas to prevent tripping hazards and should not hang over counter edges or be crimped in doors. The appliance should be placed near an easily accessible outlet for quick unplugging in emergencies.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and injury, the circulator should not be operated with a solid-state speed device, such as a dimmer control switch. Any fan with a damaged cord or plug should be discarded or returned to an authorized service facility for examination and repair. The unit should not be operated if it has been dropped or damaged. Users should not attempt to repair or replace parts themselves to avoid electrical shock; only original replacement parts should be used. If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons.

The product includes overload protection (a fuse). If the fuse blows, indicating an overload or short-circuit, the product should be unplugged, and the fuse replaced according to the user servicing instructions. If the replacement fuse also blows, a short-circuit may be present, and the product should be discarded or returned to an authorized service facility.

User servicing instructions for fuse replacement are provided: turn off the appliance, grasp the plug (not the cord) and disconnect from the outlet. Replace the fuse only with a 2.5 Amp, 125 Volt fuse approved by Vornado Consumer Service. A small flat-head screwdriver is used to slide open the fuse cover on the plug, gently lift out the old fuse, and install the new one by pushing each metal end into the receptacle one at a time, avoiding pushing on the center of the fuse. The fuse cover should then be slid closed, ensuring it fits completely in the plug without any part sticking out.

Supervision is required for children 12 years of age and younger, and anyone with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities during installation, operation, cleaning, and maintenance. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance, its parts, or packaging material.

The product has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) to reduce the risk of electric shock. This plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If it does not fit fully, the plug should be reversed. If it still does not fit, a qualified electrician should be contacted. Users should not attempt to defeat this safety feature.

Before moving, repositioning, servicing, cleaning, or when not in use, the product controls should be used to turn off the power, and then the unit should be unplugged by grasping and pulling only the plug. The product should also be unplugged if left unattended for an extended period or during electrical storms.

Troubleshooting:

The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues.

  • The unit fails to power on: Possible causes include the unit not being plugged in, the fan speed setting not being selected, a blown plug fuse (requiring replacement as per user servicing instructions), a damaged unit (requiring contact with Consumer Service), or a worn/damaged outlet (try another outlet or contact an electrician).
  • Airflow is weak or slow: This could be due to the unit being set to a low speed (adjust to a higher setting), blocked airflow (remove obstruction), or incorrect airflow direction (adjust towards the user).
  • GFCI has tripped: Under certain conditions, a reset GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet may trip when changing speeds on a Vornado circulator. In this event, users should try changing to an outlet not connected to a GFCI device. A tripped GFCI could also indicate a weak or defective GFCI outlet, in which case a qualified electrician should be contacted to check the outlet.
