Overview

The HydraPump® Smart is an automatic on-off portable water removal pump designed to efficiently transfer water from one point to another. It is particularly useful in situations requiring quick, powerful, and automated pumping, such as basements that periodically flood, overflowing pools, or swollen natural water sources like rivers and lakes. The pump is equipped with HydraSense™ technology, an electrical sensor that detects water and automatically activates the pump when sufficient water is present.

Function Description

The primary function of the HydraPump® Smart is to remove clear water from various locations. It operates automatically, detecting water levels and initiating pumping when the water depth reaches at least 1/3 of an inch. The pump continues to operate until the water level returns to approximately 1/3 of an inch above the hard surface where it is placed. After passing this 1/3 inch mark, HydraSense™ allows the pump to continue pumping for an additional 20 seconds to ensure thorough water removal. The pump is designed not to run dry; it will automatically stop once it detects that water is no longer being removed. This feature helps prevent damage to the pump. The HydraPump® Smart is submersible and can operate underwater, making it versatile for different water removal scenarios. It is specifically designed for clear water and should not be used with gasoline, other explosive liquids, or in environments with flammable or explosive fumes or gases.

Usage Features

The HydraPump® Smart is designed for ease of use with several key features:

  • Automatic Operation: The built-in HydraSense™ technology automatically detects water and activates the pump, eliminating the need for manual intervention. This is particularly beneficial for continuous monitoring and protection against unexpected flooding.
  • Portable Design: Its compact and portable nature allows for easy placement and relocation as needed.
  • Standard Garden Hose Connection: The pump comes with an outlet adapter for connection to a standard garden hose or other piping, offering out-of-the-box readiness.
  • Adapter Connections: The pump adapter supports three types of connections: a 3/4" Garden Hose Thread (GHT) elbow (90°), a straight tube adapter for GHT, and a Quick Connect. For improved outlet flow, larger hoses or adapters can be attached. The GHT connection can be cut off for installations requiring a 1” NPT connector, or the NPT threads can be removed to clamp a hose directly. Alternatively, the entire hose adapter can be unscrewed to directly attach a 1½” pipe or hose to the pump outlet. When attaching 1½” G type threads, which are similar to NPT, plumber's tape should be used for a better seal.
  • Placement Guidelines: For optimal performance, the pump should be placed upright on a hard, flat surface in the water. It is crucial not to set the pump directly on muddy or sandy surfaces, as this could clog the inlet screen and impair function.
  • Power Requirement: The pump requires a 120V AC power source and must be connected to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) device for safety. The circuit breaker and outlet must be properly grounded.
  • Handle Attachment (Optional): A handle is provided and can be attached using a Phillips screwdriver. While not essential for operation, it can facilitate handling.
  • Kink Prevention: Users should ensure that the hose or piping connected to the pump does not have kinks, which can impede water flow.
  • Temperature Considerations: The pump and its piping cannot operate below freezing temperatures.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of the HydraPump® Smart:

  • Impeller Cleaning:
    • Always disconnect the power source before attempting to clean the impeller to prevent electric shock.
    • Remove the six screws securing the pump cover.
    • Carefully remove the cover and clean any debris from the impeller.
    • Before reattaching the cover, reposition the gasket to ensure it does not obstruct the pump openings.
    • Reinstall the cover and replace the screws, being careful not to overtighten or strip them.
  • Draining for Storage:
    • After pumping, disconnect the garden hose or other piping from the pump.
    • Empty and remove both the inlet and outlet hoses.
    • Wipe the pump clean and store it in a clean, dry place for future use.
  • General Maintenance:
    • Keep the pump inlet clean and free of all foreign objects.
    • Inspect the inlet at the beginning of each use to ensure it is clear.
    • The motor housing is completely sealed and does not require regular service. Users should not disassemble the motor housing or alter the power cord, as this could result in serious injury.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Wear safety equipment, including eye protection, when working with pumps.
    • Handle the pump by its handle or sides, never by the power cord, to avoid damage.
    • Always plug the pump into a properly installed GFCI outlet.
    • Ensure the pump is cool and the power is disconnected before handling to avoid burns.
    • Continuously check that power connections and cables are not in contact with water. Consult an electrician for any questions regarding the electrical circuit or pump operations.

The HydraPump® Smart is a robust and reliable solution for automatic water removal, designed with user safety and convenience in mind.
