Overview

The Watts No. TK-9 Model "A" Backflow Preventer Test Kit is a compact, portable testing device designed for evaluating the performance of Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) Backflow Prevention Assemblies and Double Check Valve Assemblies. Its primary function is to enable accurate testing of critical parameters that ensure the proper operation of these backflow prevention devices, including zone differential pressure, relief valve opening differential, and the tightness of check valves. This kit helps identify issues such as fouled check valves or other problems that may not be apparent through visual inspection alone.

Function Description:

The test kit facilitates a series of diagnostic tests to verify the integrity and functionality of backflow preventers. For Reduced Pressure Zone Assemblies, it performs tests to:

  • Test Check Valve No. 2 for tightness against reverse flow: This test ensures that the second check valve effectively prevents backflow under various pressure differentials. A continuous decrease in pressure differential indicates a leaking valve.
  • Test Shutoff No. 2 for tightness: This test checks if the downstream shutoff valve is holding pressure properly. A continuous decrease in pressure differential towards zero suggests a leaking shutoff.
  • Test Check Valve No. 1 for tightness: Similar to the test for Check Valve No. 2, this verifies the first check valve's ability to prevent reverse flow under pressure differentials. A decrease in the indicated value points to a leaking valve.
  • Test operation of pressure differential relief valve: This crucial test assesses whether the relief valve operates correctly to maintain the required pressure differential (at least 2 psi less than the supply pressure) in the zone between the two check valves. The test involves slowly opening the low valve until the differential gauge needle starts to drop, recording the gauge reading at the moment the first discharge is noted.

For Double Check Valve Assemblies, the test kit performs tests to:

  • Test Check Valve No. 1: This test verifies the tightness of the first check valve. It involves connecting hoses, bleeding air, and observing the differential gauge reading after closing the upstream shutoff. A stable reading indicates a tight valve.
  • Test Check Valve No. 2: Similar to the first check valve test, this procedure checks the tightness of the second check valve by connecting hoses, bleeding air, and observing the differential gauge reading after closing the upstream shutoff.
  • Test for Leaky No. 2 Shutoff: This test specifically identifies excessive leakage at the downstream shutoff valve by closing both shutoffs and observing if the differential gauge rises above zero.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Working Pressure: 175 psi (12.1 bar), indicating the highest pressure the device can safely withstand during operation.
  • Maximum Working Temperature: 210°F (99°C), specifying the maximum temperature environment in which the kit can be used.
  • Gauge: Features a 4½" diameter face with a dual scale, measuring 0 – 15 psid (pounds per square inch differential) and 0 – 1 kg/cm². It boasts an accuracy of ±2% full scale, ensuring reliable readings.
  • Test Valves: Equipped with two ball valves for quick on/off control and one needle valve for precise flow adjustment, allowing for fine-tuning during tests.
  • Hoses: Includes three 3-foot long hoses, each fitted with female threaded swivel couplings for easy and secure connections.
  • Adaptors: Comes with a set of adaptors for versatility: three ¼" threaded coupling adaptors, three ½" x ¼" bushings, and three ¾" x ¼" bushings, accommodating various connection sizes.
  • Securing Strap: A 16" securing strap is provided for convenience during use.
  • Instruction Guide: Includes a moisture-resistant instruction guide, ensuring durability and readability in various field conditions.
  • Case: Housed in a lightweight, shock-resistant molded plastic case with foam inserts, providing protection and organized storage for the components.

Usage Features:

The TK-9A is designed for ease of use in the field. Its compact and portable nature, combined with a rugged carrying case, ensures easy handling and accessibility. The clear instructions guide users through each test procedure, making it suitable for both experienced technicians and those new to backflow prevention testing. The dual-scale gauge allows for readings in both imperial and metric units, enhancing its versatility. The ball and needle valves provide precise control over pressure and flow, which is critical for accurate differential pressure measurements. The various adaptors ensure compatibility with a wide range of backflow preventer sizes and types.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual does not detail specific maintenance for the test kit itself, it emphasizes a crucial step for its longevity:

  • Preventing Freezing: To prevent damage from freezing, users are instructed to hold the Test Kit vertically to drain the differential gauge and hoses prior to placing it back in its case. This simple step helps protect the sensitive internal components from water expansion damage in cold environments. The durable molded plastic case with foam inserts also contributes to the kit's maintenance by protecting it from physical shock and keeping components organized, reducing the risk of damage or loss during transport and storage.
