Overview

The Wavlink USB-C Ultra 5K Universal Docking Station is a versatile peripheral designed to expand the connectivity and display capabilities of both USB Type-C and Type-A enabled laptops and desktop computers. This quick start guide outlines its features, installation, and configuration for Windows and Mac OS X systems.

Function Description

The docking station serves as a central hub, allowing users to connect a wide array of accessories and external displays to their host computer via a single USB cable. It is engineered to provide a comprehensive docking solution that is both backward-compatible with older USB standards and future-proof with USB Type-C connectivity. The device supports multiple display configurations, including extended, mirrored, and primary display modes, and offers rotation capabilities for flexible screen orientation.

A key function of this docking station is its ability to support high-resolution video output. For users with a 5K monitor, it can deliver a stunning 5K (5120x2880@60Hz) resolution when dual DisplayPort (DP) ports are connected simultaneously. Alternatively, it supports dual 4K HDMI, dual 4K DisplayPort, or a combination of 4K HDMI and 4K DisplayPort outputs, catering to various monitor setups. The integrated USB 3.0 GPU facilitates a "Plug and Display" experience, simplifying the setup process for external monitors.

Beyond video, the docking station significantly expands USB connectivity. It features multiple SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports, offering data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps, and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices. Depending on the model (WL-UG69DK1 or WL-UG69DK7), it includes a combination of USB Type-A and USB Type-C downstream ports for connecting various peripherals like keyboards, mice, external storage, and other USB-C devices.

Network connectivity is also enhanced with a built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 port, ensuring a stable and high-speed wired internet connection. For audio needs, the docking station provides separate microphone input and audio output ports, supporting 5.1 Channel Surround Sound through its HDMI/DP ports, making it suitable for multimedia applications, conferencing, and gaming.

The software accompanying the docking station, the USB-C Ultra 5K Universal Docking Station Software, enables full configuration of all additional USB displays. This includes support for up to 6 additional USB displays on Windows systems and up to 4 additional USB displays on Mac OS X, offering extensive multi-monitor setups for increased productivity.

Usage Features

The docking station is designed for ease of use and broad compatibility. It connects to the host computer using either a USB 3.1 C to C Cable or a USB 3.1 A to C Cable, accommodating different host port types. An external DC20V certified power adapter is required to operate the docking station, ensuring stable power delivery to all connected devices and displays.

For Windows users, the setup involves installing the DisplayLink driver, which can be downloaded from the Wavlink or DisplayLink websites. Once installed, users can configure audio settings by selecting the desired speaker and microphone devices from the DisplayLink Icon in the taskbar. Video settings are equally straightforward, allowing users to extend their desktop to additional displays and adjust orientation and resolution through the DisplayLink Icon's Video Setup option. The installation process for the DisplayLink Core Software may involve a temporary screen blackout or flash, and a system reboot might be necessary on some computers to finalize the setup. Advanced display modes allow for specific resolution adjustments to optimize the viewing experience.

Mac OS X users also need to install the appropriate Mac Driver, which supports various versions from Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) up to 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion). The Mac installer guides users through the installation process, which typically requires a system restart. After installation, connecting displays to the Mac via the docking station is simple. Users can connect their MacBook Pro or MacBook Air to the powered dock and then connect monitors to the dock using standard HDMI and DisplayPort cables. The guide also illustrates how to daisy-chain two docking stations (WL-UG69DK7/WL-UG69DK1) to support an even greater number of displays, highlighting the flexibility of the system. Configuration on Mac OS X involves opening System Preferences, clicking on "Displays," and then arranging and configuring the connected monitors, including options for mirroring and adjusting resolution.

The physical design of the docking station varies slightly between models. The WL-UG69DK7 features an aluminum alloy body and includes four SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type-A ports and two SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Gen 1 Type-C ports. The WL-UG69DK1, on the other hand, comes with six SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type-A ports and an ON/OFF power switch. Both models offer a comprehensive set of ports on their front and rear panels, including USB downstream ports, Ethernet, HDMI, DisplayPort, and audio jacks, ensuring that a wide range of peripherals can be connected.

Maintenance Features

The primary maintenance aspect for this device involves driver management. Users are advised to always use the latest version of the DisplayLink driver to ensure optimal performance and compatibility with their operating system and connected devices. Regular checks on the Wavlink or DisplayLink websites for driver updates are recommended.

Uninstalling the driver, if necessary, is a guided process for Windows users, typically involving accessing the Control Panel, navigating to "Programs," and then selecting "Uninstall program" for the DisplayLink Core software. A confirmation dialog will appear, and a system reboot is usually required to complete the uninstallation. For Mac users, an "Uninstaller" tool is provided within the MAC DriverInstaller image, which also necessitates a system restart after completion.

The device is built to be robust, but users should follow safety instructions to ensure its longevity. This includes keeping the equipment away from humidity and seeking professional service if it has been exposed to moisture, dropped, damaged, or shows obvious signs of breakage, or if it fails to function correctly according to the user's manual.

At the end of its serviceable life, the product should be disposed of responsibly in accordance with the WEEE Directive. It should not be treated as household or general waste but should be handed over to an applicable collection point for the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment or returned to the supplier for disposal. This ensures environmental responsibility and proper handling of electronic waste.
