The Welch Allyn VideoPath Veterinary Imaging System is a portable, battery-operated video camera designed for obtaining high-quality video images during veterinary medicine practice. It allows for a higher level of magnification compared to direct visualization, enabling more detailed viewing of small structures. The system also facilitates conscious inspection of small cavities by allowing the user to remain at arm's length from the animal, as the image is displayed on a monitor. Furthermore, it enhances client and colleague involvement in diagnosis and treatment by sharing the visual anatomy.
The system is designed for "Plug and Play" operation, meaning that all adjustments, including focus, illumination, and white balance, are pre-set at the factory. This simplifies setup and ensures optimal performance without requiring complex user adjustments.
Models:
The manual covers models 23100V, 2310VP, 23101V, and 23101VP.
Components:
A typical 23100V VideoPath Veterinary Imaging System includes:
- A video head
- Two reusable specula (4mm and 5mm)
- A video output cable
Required Accessories (not included with all models):
- A 3.5-volt Welch Allyn power handle (rechargeable battery handle)
- A video monitor for on-screen display of video images
Technical Specifications and Usage:
Setup:
- Power Handle Connection: Attach the video head to any 3.5V Welch Allyn rechargeable battery handle. DO NOT ATTACH TO A WALL TRANSFORMER. Using alternate power sources will damage the video head.
- Video Cable Connection: With the power off, connect the supplied video cable to the output on the back of the video head.
- Monitor Connection: Connect the other end of the video cable to the "Input" or "Video In" on a video monitor, VCR, or other composite video input device.
- Speculum Attachment: Attach one of the reusable specula (4mm or 5mm) to the video head by rotating it clockwise. The quality of the video image will deteriorate if other specula are used.
- Monitor Power: Turn on the power switch on the monitor.
- Rheostat Setting: Turn the rheostat on the power handle to FULL POWER. For optimum performance, the VideoPath Veterinary Imaging System should always be used with the rheostat set to maximum brightness. The electronic controls within the video system automatically optimize the brightness of the image.
Image Adjustments:
No further adjustments are necessary on the video head itself. However, the color and brightness controls on the video monitor may need to be adjusted to achieve the best possible picture quality.
Indications for Use:
The VideoPath Veterinary Imaging System is suitable for various inspections, including:
- Inspection of the ear canal in companion animals
- Oral and dental inspection
- Observation of dermatitis or other skin conditions
- Other small cavity inspections, such as vaginal, anal, nasal, and pharyngeal examinations.
Maintenance Features:

- From the bottom of the Video Head, grasp the base of the lamp and pull it straight out. A forceps or needle-nose pliers may be needed to firmly grasp the black lamp base.
- Insert the new lamp assembly by pushing it firmly into the Video Head.
- Attach the power handle to firmly seat the lamp.
- Avoid removing the lamp for reasons other than replacement.
Battery Replacement:
- Caution: The battery handle must be disconnected from the supply when removing batteries.
- Procedure (for rechargeable batteries that no longer accept a charge):
- Unscrew the bottom cap of the handle.
- Shake out the old battery.
