Overview

This document describes the Westinghouse Clothes Dryer, model WDV457H3WB, a household appliance designed for drying clothes, towels, and linen. It emphasizes safe operation, proper installation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and user safety.

Function Description:

The Westinghouse WDV457H3WB is a tumble dryer that uses heat and tumbling action to remove moisture from washed laundry. It features a time control and temperature control to allow users to select appropriate drying settings for different fabric types. The dryer is designed for domestic use and should not be used for any other purpose. It incorporates safety features such as a door safety button and a lint filter to prevent hazards. The appliance is designed to operate on an AC power supply, properly earthed and with the correct voltage as specified on the serial number sticker.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: WDV457H3WB
  • Dimensions (Height / Width / Depth): 795 mm x 600 mm x 560 mm
  • Power Supply (Voltage / Frequency): 220 - 240 V / 50 Hz
  • Heater Power: 2100 W
  • Fuse Installation: 10 A
  • Maximum Capacity: 4.5 kg

The dryer's capacity of 4.5 kg is suitable for typical household laundry loads. The power specifications indicate it is designed for standard electrical outlets in regions using 220-240V at 50Hz.

Usage Features:

The dryer offers a straightforward 5-step operating guide:

  1. Load Preparation: Load the dryer loosely, ensuring not to exceed two-thirds full. Clothes must tumble freely for efficient drying.
  2. Drying Time Selection: Turn the knob to select the desired drying time. Incorrect settings can lead to damage.
  3. Temperature Selection: Choose one of the two available temperature settings:
    • 'Warm' for delicate items such as synthetics, underwear, etc.
    • 'Hot' for heavy, durable items such as towels and flannelette sheets.
  4. Start Operation: Switch on the dryer by pushing the door safety button.
  5. Lint Filter Cleaning: After every load, clean the lint filter located at the front of the dryer to reduce drying times and avoid overheating.

The dryer includes standard features such as reversing action, where the drum turns in one direction and then anti-clockwise. This helps reduce tangling and allows for more even drying in a shorter time. A 'Cool Down' cycle is also integrated, which automatically reduces the temperature at the end of the drying cycle to minimize creasing.

Drying Guide:

The manual provides a drying guide based on the weight of laundry and recommended settings. It advises checking laundry labels for care instructions.

  • Permanent press and synthetics: Should be dried with reduced tumbling to prevent wrinkles.
  • Woollen articles: Not recommended for tumble drying; if unavoidable, they should be pulled to their original shape and dried flat.
  • Woven and loop knit materials: May shrink, so the 'hot' setting is not recommended for these fabrics.
  • Fibre or leather materials: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Baby clothes and nightgowns: Acrylic clothing or sleepwear should only be dried on the 'warm' setting.
  • Rubber and plastics: Do not dry items made from or containing rubber or plastics, such as aprons, bibs, waterproof napkins, curtains, tablecloths, shower caps, foam rubber pads, pillows, rubber boots, or rubber-coated sports shoes.
  • Fibreglass: Not recommended. Glass particles can be picked up by other clothes.

Installation Instructions:

The dryer can be installed on the floor, on a workbench, or mounted on a wall (upside down or upright) using the included mounting kit. It is crucial to ensure adequate ventilation. The exhaust grille at the front of the dryer can be rotated to select the optimum exhaust air angle. Two venting options are available: front venting (default) or rear venting using an optional venting kit (DVK005K for through-the-wall or DVK006 for universal flexible hose). If a venting kit is used, the exhaust grille must be replaced with an outlet cover from the back of the dryer. The exhaust duct should not exceed 2 meters in length at 100mm diameter. If discharging exhaust air out of the room, adequate ventilation must be maintained to prevent backflow of gases from other fuel-burning appliances. The appliance should not be installed behind a lockable door or in a small, un-vented laundry unless a venting kit is used.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the dryer's efficiency and longevity.

  • Lint Filter Cleaning: The lint filter must be cleaned after every load. The filter is located inside the door opening and consists of two pads that need to be pulled out and opened to remove accumulated lint. Lint build-up is a fire hazard and can increase drying times.
  • General Cleaning: Lint should not be allowed to accumulate around the tumble dryer.
  • Pre-drying Preparation: Items that have been spotted or soaked with vegetable oil, cooking oil, suntan oil, linseed oil, salad oil, lubrication oil, or grease should be washed in hot water with extra detergent before drying to reduce fire risk. Items previously cleaned with flammable substances (petrol/gasoline, industrial chemicals, dry-cleaning solvents, acetone, denatured alcohol, kerosene, turpentine, waxes, wax removers) should not be placed in the dryer.
  • Avoiding Over-drying: Do not over-dry laundry, as this can cause creasing and waste energy. Remove laundry as soon as the dryer finishes.
  • Static Charge Prevention: To avoid static charge, use a fabric softener during washing or a fabric conditioner specifically for tumble dryers.
  • Pre-spinning: Laundry should be thoroughly spun before tumble drying. Easy-care items like shirts should be briefly pre-spun (approx. 30 seconds) to reduce creasing.
  • Pocket Check: Always check and empty pockets before drying to prevent damage to clothes and the dryer.
  • Zippers and Buttons: Close zippers, snaps, and hooks, and tie belts and apron strings to prevent tangling.

Safety Instructions:

The manual stresses several critical safety instructions:

  • Electrical Connection: Plug the appliance directly into a properly earthed AC power supply with the correct voltage. Avoid double adaptors, extension cords, or power boards.
  • Supervision: The appliance is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance.
  • Damaged Cord: If the electrical cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, an authorized service agent, or a similarly qualified person.
  • Fire Hazards: Do not dry unwashed items. Never stop a tumble dryer before the end of the drying cycle unless all items are quickly removed and spread out to dissipate heat. Highly flammable substances and items containing foam rubber or similar materials are strictly prohibited due to the risk of spontaneous combustion or explosion.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent overheating and the backflow of gases if a venting kit is used.

Failure to adhere to these instructions may result in personal injury, property damage, and could affect the manufacturer's warranty. The warranty may be void if the product fault is due to non-adherence to the manual.
