Why does my Whitfield Stove have a lazy orange flame and excessive soot?

  A lazy orange flame and excessive soot in your Whitfield Stove are often due to insufficient combustion air. This can be caused by a lack of maintenance. Try cleaning the Ultragrate, clean-out ports, exhaust flow passages, venting system, and exhaust blower intake. Remove any clinkers or ash from the bottom of the Ultragrate that might be obstructing the primary air holes. Check that the heat exchange tubes are not coated with ash. Clean internal exhaust ducts. Also, inspect the door and ashpan gaskets, air inlet tube, and exhaust pipe for blockages or damage. The fuel trim may need adjustment, or a better grade of fuel may be necessary. Ensure the damper is open enough for the fuel amount. If problems persist, have your authorized Lennox Hearth Products dealer check your exhaust blower.

For older installations, inspect the pipe for ash accumulation or obstructions and clean it out. Make sure the thermostat isn't set too low or exposed to direct sunlight. Re-install any disconnected thermostat wires. Allow the stove to cool and increase the room air blower setting. Gently tap the auger motor.   If your Whitfield Stove's fire goes out or it shuts down automatically, there are a few potential reasons. The stove may have run out of fuel, so refill the hopper. The high limit disc (thermal switch) may have tripped, in which case you should allow the stove to cool for 1 hour and then re-light it. If the stove has been operating at a medium to high burn rate and the room air blower has been turned down low then the fan should be turned up higher. Also, too much combustion air for the amount of fuel could be the cause, so adjust the damper to reduce combustion airflow. If the problem persists, especially at lower burn rates, the high limit disc should be replaced by your authorized dealer.

  If the blowers on your Whitfield Stove won't operate when you press the start button, it could be due to a lack of power. Check that the stove is plugged into the wall outlet and that the circuit breaker hasn't tripped. Also, inspect the wire connections on the high limit disc and control board.
