Overview

The Whynter 34 Quart Compact Portable Freezer Refrigerator, model FMC-350XP, is a versatile appliance designed for both refrigeration and freezing needs, suitable for various applications such as RVs, boats, campsites, fishing trips, and general portable use. It can operate using either a standard household 110 Volt outlet or a 12 Volt automotive battery, offering flexibility for use in diverse environments.

Function Description:

This portable freezer refrigerator functions as both a freezer and a refrigerator, capable of maintaining temperatures between -8°F and 50°F. It utilizes a compressor cooling system to achieve and maintain desired temperatures. The unit features a "Fast Freeze" mode that rapidly cools the interior to -8°F, ideal for quickly freezing items. A digital control system with an LED temperature display allows users to precisely set and monitor the internal temperature. The control panel includes a Power/Mode button for turning the unit on/off and selecting operation modes (Auto, High, Low Speed), a Set button for temperature adjustment, and Temperature Control buttons (Up/Down) for fine-tuning the temperature in 1°F increments.

The appliance offers three operational modes:

  • High (Fast Freeze) Mode: Indicated by a red light and "FF" on the display, this mode rapidly cools the unit to -8°F. It is recommended not to run this mode for more than four hours to avoid adversely affecting the refrigeration system.
  • Auto Mode: Indicated by an orange light, this mode provides fully automatic operation, ensuring hassle-free temperature maintenance within the set range of -8°F to 50°F. The freezer automatically adjusts its operation for optimal performance.
  • Low Speed Mode: Indicated by a green light, this mode operates the portable freezer at the lowest fan speed, minimizing energy consumption while maintaining the set temperature between -8°F to 50°F.

The unit is equipped with an AC/DC indicator on the LED display, showing "AC" when connected to a 115 Volt AC power source and the current running voltage when connected to a 12 Volt DC power source. A battery icon is displayed when connected to a DC power source, symbolizing the remaining battery voltage.

For convenience, the portable freezer includes a USB output port for charging small electronic devices like smartphones and cameras. It also features an energy-saving LED light inside, which automatically illuminates when the freezer door is opened and turns off when the door is fully closed. An Open-door warning system alerts the user if the freezer door is left open for more than one minute, helping to prevent temperature fluctuations and energy waste.

Usage Features:

The Whynter portable freezer is designed for ease of use and mobility. It comes with side handles for easy transport. The interior includes one large and one small removable wire basket for organized storage of food and beverages. A non-slip rubber mat is provided to maintain grip on the surface of the portable freezer, preventing drinks from spilling or sliding during movement. The unit is designed to function effectively even when tilted up to 30 degrees, making it suitable for dynamic environments like vehicles.

For optimal performance, it is recommended to position the freezer with at least 6 inches of clearance on the sides to allow for adequate heat ventilation from the back of the freezer. The appliance should be placed on a hard, level, and solid surface capable of supporting its weight when fully loaded. It is important to avoid placing the freezer near external heat sources, direct sunlight, or in areas exposed to rain or excessive moisture.

When storing frozen food, it is advisable to set the temperature to -8°F for at least two hours before introducing items, especially when using the freezer for the first time or after defrosting. Food should be packed into separate meal portions and not in bulk form, and hot or warm food should not be placed directly into the freezer. Fresh foods should be stored separately from frozen foods. Care should be taken not to store glass-bottled drinks like beer or soda cans when the temperature is set below 32°F, as they may burst. The appliance should not be used as a refrigerator when the ambient temperature is 41°F, as food may freeze.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for the longevity and efficient operation of the portable freezer. Before any cleaning or maintenance, the unit must be unplugged from its power source.

Defrosting: The unit requires manual defrosting when the frost layer becomes approximately 1½ inches thick. To defrost, unplug the unit, remove all food and place it in insulated containers, and leave the door open. Hot water can be used to speed up the loosening of frost. The unit has clear and black drain plugs (one inside the base cabinet and one on the side) to facilitate water drainage during defrosting. After defrosting, the interior should be cleaned and dried with a soft cloth before replacing the drain plugs and plugging the unit back in. Mechanical devices, hot water poured directly into the compartment, or hair dryers should not be used to accelerate defrosting.

Cleaning:

  • Outside/Exterior: The exterior can be wiped with a clean cloth lightly dampened with appliance polish wax or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent, then dried and polished with a clean, soft cloth. Abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, powdered cleaners, bleach, or cleaners containing bleach should not be used.
  • Inside: The interior can be cleaned with a solution of warm water and baking soda (about a tablespoon of baking soda to a quart of water). After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with water and wipe dry. Cleaning powders or other abrasive cleaners should be avoided. An open box of baking soda placed inside the freezer can help absorb stale odors and should be changed every three months.

Prolonged Off Periods: If the freezer will not be used for an extended period, it should be disconnected from the main power supply, cleaned, and dried. The freezer door should be left open to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Energy Saving Tips: To optimize energy efficiency, the freezer should be located in the coolest area of the room, away from heat-producing appliances or direct sunlight. Hot foods should be allowed to cool to room temperature before being placed in the freezer. Overloading the freezer should be avoided, and foods should be properly wrapped and dried before storage to reduce frost buildup. Lining freezer shelves with aluminum foil, wax paper, or paper toweling is not recommended as it interferes with cold air circulation. Organizing and labeling food helps reduce door openings and extended searches.

The appliance is supplied with a pre-installed 15A fuse, located in the control panel, for protection. The power cords (8' AC power cord and 10' DC power cord) should be secured behind the unit and not left exposed or dangling to prevent accidental injury. It is strongly recommended not to use an extension cord with this appliance due to potential safety hazards. If an extension cord must be used, it should be a UL/CUL-Listed, 3-wire grounding type appliance extension cord with an electrical rating of 15 amperes and 115 volts.
