Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Woods 50102 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the IllWoods 24 Hour Heavy Duty Mechanical Timer, available in models 50102 and 50103 (item numbers 50102WD and 50103WD). This device is a mechanical timer designed for heavy-duty applications, featuring a single grounded outlet.

Function Description:

The IllWoods mechanical timer is designed to automate the on/off cycles of connected electrical appliances over a 24-hour period. It allows users to program specific intervals during which the connected device will receive power, repeating this cycle daily. The timer includes a manual override switch, enabling the user to bypass the programmed schedule and keep the device either continuously on or off. Its robust design is suitable for various applications, particularly those requiring reliable, repetitive power control. The timer is equipped with a grounded plug and a grounded outlet, ensuring safe operation with compatible appliances.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 125Vac
  • Frequency: 60Hz
  • Resistive Load: 15A / 1875W
  • Tungsten Load: 10A / 1250W
  • Motor Rating: 1/2Hp
  • Operating Temperature Range: 0°C to 55°C (32°F to 131°F)

These specifications indicate that the timer is capable of handling a significant electrical load, making it suitable for heavy-duty applications. The resistive load rating is relevant for devices like heaters, while the tungsten load rating applies to lighting. The 1/2Hp motor rating allows it to control small motors. The operating temperature range ensures functionality in typical indoor environments.

Usage Features:

The timer offers straightforward operation with several key features:

  • Setting Current Time: To set the current time, the user rotates the dial clockwise until the current time aligns with an arrow indicator. PM hours are visually distinguished by shading on the dial.
  • Programming the Timer: Programming involves manipulating segment pins around the dial. Initially, all segment pins should be pulled up. To program an "ON" period, the user pushes down the segment pins corresponding to the desired time intervals. Each segment pin represents 30 minutes, meaning two pins equate to one hour of "ON" time. This programming repeats daily, providing a consistent schedule.
  • Connecting the Timer: To use the timer, the switch located on the top of the timer must be set to the "timer on" position. The appliance to be controlled is then plugged into the timer's grounded outlet, and the appliance itself is turned on. Finally, the timer is plugged into a wall outlet.
  • Manual Override: The timer features a convenient override switch on its top. Sliding this switch to the "always on" position bypasses the programmed schedule, keeping the connected device continuously powered. This is useful for situations where temporary continuous operation is needed without altering the programmed schedule.
  • Power Failure Reset: In the event of a power failure, the timer will need to be reset. The instructions advise resetting the timer by following the initial step for setting the current time, ensuring accurate timing resumes.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual includes critical safety warnings to prevent electric shock and ensure proper use. Users are cautioned to plug the timer directly into an electrical outlet, avoid use in wet locations, and use it exclusively indoors. It should be kept away from children. Importantly, the timer should not be used to control appliances with heating elements such as cooking appliances, heaters, or irons, due to potential safety risks. Users must not exceed the specified electrical ratings and should avoid using the timer with extension cords.
  • Load Calculation: A crucial caution advises against plugging in more than the rated load. To determine the total wattage being used, users can find the wattage marked on the appliance. If wattage is not provided, it can be calculated by multiplying the appliance's ampere rating (found on its nameplate) by 125 volts. For lamps with multiple bulbs, the wattage of each bulb should be added together. This helps prevent overloading the timer and ensures safe operation.
  • Grounded Device: The timer is explicitly stated as a GROUNDED device, featuring a grounded plug and a grounded outlet, which is a key safety feature for preventing electrical hazards.

Maintenance Features:

  • Warranty: The product comes with a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in materials and workmanship. If the product is found to be defective within this period, customers can contact customer support for repair or replacement parts, or return the product to the store of purchase. The warranty explicitly excludes normal wear and tear.
  • User Modifications: Users are cautioned against making any modifications or changes to the product that are not approved by Southwire Co. Such unauthorized alterations could void the product's compliance and the user's authority to operate the equipment, potentially leading to safety issues or equipment malfunction.
  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules, indicating it has been tested and found to meet the limits for a Class B digital device. This compliance aims to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. The manual advises users on how to address potential radio or television interference caused by the device, suggesting measures like reorienting the receiving antenna, increasing separation between equipment and receiver, connecting to a different circuit, or consulting a technician.
  • Canadian Digital Apparatus Compliance: The device also complies with Canadian ICES-003(B)/NMB-003(B) standards for digital apparatus.
  • Customer Support: Customer support is available via telephone at (800) 561-4321, and further information can be found on the www.southwire.com website. This provides a channel for users to seek assistance with product issues, warranty claims, or general inquiries.
