The Woods Grading Scrapers are agricultural implements designed for various earthmoving and land-leveling tasks. These scrapers are available in several models, including GS54.30, GS60.30, GS72.30, GS84.40, and GS96.40, each offering different working widths and specifications to suit various tractor sizes and operational needs.
Function Description:
The primary function of the Woods Grading Scrapers is to prepare and maintain land surfaces. They are used for scarifying, scraping, leveling, and grading. Scarifying involves breaking up hard soil surfaces, while scraping and grading are used to move and spread soil to achieve a desired level or slope. Leveling ensures a smooth and even surface, which is crucial for various agricultural and construction applications. The reversible cutting edges allow for extended use and efficiency.

The scrapers are designed to connect to a tractor's 3-point hitch system. The GSXX.30 models are compatible with Category 1, 3-point tractors equipped with side swing-type lower lift arms. The GSXX.40 models are compatible with Category 1 and 2, 3-point hitches. The tractor drawbar should be adjusted to the shortest and highest position for optimal performance.
Usage Features:
The operation of the grading scraper involves several key steps:
- Connecting to Tractor: The scraper attaches to the tractor's 3-point hitch. Proper connection involves securing the lower 3-point arms to the scraper frame and connecting the top link. For quick hitch systems, specific sleeves and pins are used.
- Scarifying: To scarify, the scarifier shanks are positioned in the points facing toward the tractor. The lock pins are used to set the scarifier depth (0", 1.5", or 3.0"). Lowering the grading scraper and driving the tractor ahead initiates the scarifying operation. Adjusting the depth of the scarifier by setting the top link can provide deeper and more aggressive operation.
- Scraping: To scrape, scarifier shanks are raised and removed. The depth of the scraper is adjusted by tilting the unit with the tractor top link. Raising or lowering the cutting edge adjusts the desired depth of cutting. The lower the cutting edge is below the skid shoes, the more aggressive the cut. The scraper is driven forward to cut and distribute material. Note that the grading scraper does not scrape if the tractor is moving in reverse.
- Leveling: To change the levelness of the scraper, the skid shoe can be adjusted higher than the other. The tilt link on the lower lift arm of the tractor can also be adjusted to provide the correct slope. The five-degree angle of the cutting edges produces a more aggressive and level cut than edges placed perpendicular to the direction of travel.
- Spreading and Leveling: This involves raising or removing scarifier shanks. Material is spread by driving forward, pulling material with the cutting edge, and spreading along the direction of travel. Repeating this process until the material is spread as desired. To crown a roadway, the crown is formed by driving the right-hand side of the roadway and allowing the scraper to loosen material. The lower lift arm of the tractor can be adjusted to tilt the scraper for a more aggressive crowning action.
Maintenance Features:
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the grading scraper.
- Pre-Operation Checklist: Before each use, inspect the equipment thoroughly. Check all bolts to ensure they are properly torqued, and verify that all cotter pins and safety pins are properly installed and undamaged. All safety decals should be in good condition. Lubrication points must be greased, and the blade cutting edge should be checked for damage. All hydraulic hoses and fittings should be checked for leaks, twists, or damage.
- Replacing Cutting Edge: The grading scrapers use two 1/2" x 6" (12.7 x 152 mm) cutting edges that are interchangeable and reversible. To replace, block up the machine, remove the lock nuts and plow bolts, and replace the worn edge with a new one. Torque plow bolts to specifications given in the Bolt Torque Chart.
- Cleaning: After each use, remove large debris such as clumps of dirt, grass, crop residue, etc., from the machine. Inspect the machine and replace worn or damaged parts. Replace any safety decals that are missing or not readable.
- Storage: Block equipment securely for storage. Keep children, bystanders, and animals away from the equipment and the storage area. To prevent injury, always block the equipment securely to prevent it from falling or rolling. Do not climb or lean on stored equipment.
- Scarifier Shanks: Scarifier shanks have three operating positions. They may be removed if scarifying action is not needed. To remove, block up the machine, lower the grading scraper to rest securely on the blocks, and remove the shanks.
- Periodically or Before Extended Storage: Clean large debris, remove the remainder using a low-pressure water spray, and lubricate all moving parts. When spraying near scratched or torn safety decals or near edges of decals, use water spray or peel decals off the surface. If a pressure washer is used, follow the advice of the pressure washer manufacturer. Inspect the machine and replace worn or damaged parts. Sand down scratches and the edges of areas of missing paint and coat with Woods spray paint, or a matching color. Replace any safety decals that are missing or not readable.
Safety Rules:
The manual emphasizes several safety rules, including:
- General Safety: Always read and understand the operator's manual and safety decals. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Never allow children or untrained persons to operate equipment.
- Operation Safety: Do not operate or transport equipment while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Always comply with all state and local lighting and marking requirements. Operate only in daylight or good artificial light. Keep hands, feet, hair, and clothing away from equipment while engine is running. Stay clear of all moving parts.
- Preparation Safety: Check that all hardware is properly installed and torqued. Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing. Make sure attachment is properly secured, adjusted, and in good operating condition.
- Transportation Safety: Always comply with all state and local lighting and marking requirements. Never allow riders on power unit or attachment. Do not operate or transport on steep slopes. Do not operate or transport equipment while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Storage Safety: Follow manual instructions for blocking equipment and storage. Keep children, bystanders, and animals away from the equipment and the storage area.
The manual also includes a detailed bolt torque chart for SAE and Metric fasteners, as well as a list of abbreviations used throughout the document. This comprehensive approach ensures that users can operate and maintain their Woods Grading Scrapers safely and effectively.
