Overview

The XPower PowerSource 1800 is an advanced power electronics device designed to provide backup power for various electronic devices and small household appliances. Manufactured by Xantrex Technology Inc., a leading supplier in power electronics, this unit is suitable for both home and small office environments. It functions as a standby UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), automatically providing AC power from its internal battery when utility power is unavailable or falls below 105 VAC.

Function Description

The primary function of the PowerSource 1800 is to supply continuous AC power to connected devices, especially during power outages, brownouts, or over-voltages. It converts DC power from its internal battery pack into AC power, mimicking a normal household wall outlet. The unit has a continuous output power rating of 1440 watts and a peak output of 1800 watts, with a surge capacity of 2880 watts, making it capable of running a variety of loads.

When utility power is present, the PowerSource 1800 acts as a pass-through, providing AC power directly from the wall outlet to the connected devices. Simultaneously, it recharges its internal battery. In the event of a power interruption, the unit seamlessly switches to battery backup mode, ensuring uninterrupted operation for connected electronics. The transfer switch operates quickly, typically under 80 milliseconds, to prevent disruption.

The PowerSource 1800 features five 120V AC outlets—one in the front and four in the rear. All these outlets are surge protected and backed up by the internal battery. This means that devices plugged into any of these outlets will continue to receive power during an outage.

Usage Features

The PowerSource 1800 is designed for ease of use with several intuitive features:

  • Power Button: This button is used to turn the PowerSource 1800 on and off when utility power is not available. A press and hold for at least half a second activates or deactivates the unit. When utility power is present, the Power button cannot be used to remove power from the AC outlets, ensuring continuous power supply.
  • AC Power/Battery LED: This indicator illuminates green when utility power is available, signifying that the unit is operating normally and potentially charging. It flashes amber when the PowerSource 1800 is providing backup power from its internal battery, alerting the user to a power outage.
  • LED Screen: A clear LED screen provides essential information about the unit's status. It displays charging status, the power draw from the PowerSource 1800 in watts (W) when providing backup power, or the battery capacity in percentage (%). The screen also shows error codes to assist with troubleshooting, such as "CHG" when recharging or "FUL" when fully charged.
  • Select Button: This button allows the user to toggle between displaying the PowerSource 1800 Battery Level (%) and the Output Power (W) on the LED screen. This helps users monitor their power consumption and remaining battery life.
  • Charged/Charging LED: This green LED illuminates steadily when the PowerSource 1800 is fully recharged and flashes while the unit is actively recharging its internal battery.
  • Fault LED: This red LED illuminates when the PowerSource 1800 encounters an operational fault, indicating a problem that requires attention.
  • Blue LED: A blue LED illuminates the rear AC outlets when AC power is available, confirming that these outlets are active.
  • Supplementary Protector: A 15 A supplementary protector is included to protect the PowerSource 1800 AC outlets and connected applications from overload conditions. This acts as a breaker that can be reset if tripped.

Operation Guidelines:

  • Installation: The unit should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not into a surge protector or power strip. Electronic devices and appliances are then connected to the PowerSource 1800's AC outlets.
  • Ventilation: During installation, it's important to allow a minimum of 3 inches of space around the unit for optimal ventilation to prevent overheating.
  • Backup Power Activation: To activate the AC outlets for backup operation, the unit must be turned on using the Power button.
  • Run Time: The PowerSource 1800 can run connected products for up to 10 hours, depending on the power draw. Examples of run times for typical products are provided in the manual, ranging from 63 hours for a cordless phone to 12 minutes for a microwave.
  • Rechargeable Appliances: The unit outputs a non-sinusoidal modified sine wave when on battery backup. Users should be aware that certain types of load equipment, particularly some chargers for rechargeable batteries and appliances with speed controllers, may be damaged by this waveform. It is recommended to contact the equipment manufacturer if unsure about compatibility.
  • Overload Protection: If the total power consumption of connected devices exceeds the unit's continuous or surge capacity, the unit may shut down, and an error code will be displayed. The supplementary protector may also trip.
  • Temperature Management: The unit is designed for indoor use in a clean, temperature-controlled environment. Over-temperature warnings and shutdowns can occur if ventilation is poor or ambient temperatures are too high.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Charging: The PowerSource 1800 automatically recharges its internal battery when utility power is restored. A complete charge can take up to 15 hours from a 120 VAC wall outlet. It is crucial to charge the unit before storage or use to prevent total battery discharge and ensure extended run time.
  • Troubleshooting: The LED screen displays error codes (e.g., E01 for low voltage shutdown, E03 for overload shutdown, E04 for over-temperature shutdown, E05 for under-voltage warning, E06 for over-temperature warning) to help users diagnose and resolve common issues. The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting reference with possible causes and solutions for various conditions and symptoms.
  • Battery Replacement: The battery pack consists of three 17 amp-hour sealed lead acid (AGM) batteries. When these batteries reach the end of their useful service life, they can be replaced by a qualified battery technician. Suitable replacement batteries are specified (e.g., Panasonic® #LC-X1220P and EnerSys™ #NPX-80). Information on replacement battery brands and dealers can be found on the Xantrex Support site.
  • Recycling: Due to the lead content in the internal batteries, the PowerSource 1800 and its batteries should be recycled or disposed of safely at a local recycling depot. They should not be discarded with common household waste.

Safety Instructions

The PowerSource 1800 generates potentially lethal AC power. Users are warned against inserting foreign objects into AC outlets or ventilation holes and exposing the product to water, rain, snow, or spray. It should not be used with life support systems or other medical equipment. The unit should not be used where flammable fumes or gases are present, as there is an explosion hazard. The cover should not be removed, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside, and servicing should be referred to qualified personnel. Batteries can present a risk of burns from high short-circuit currents.

The unit will not work when connected to any AC load that has its neutral conductor connected to ground, such as AC distribution wiring or house wiring. This is an important consideration for proper installation and operation.
