Do you have a question about the Yamaha Super Tenere ABS 2018 and is the answer not in the manual?
This document is the owner's manual for the Yamaha XT1200ZE Super Ténéré ABS motorcycle, model BP9-28199-E1, published in August 2018. It provides comprehensive information on the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the vehicle.
The motorcycle is equipped with an immobilizer system to prevent theft, which includes a code re-registering key (red bow) and two standard keys (black bow), each containing a transponder. The system also comprises an immobilizer unit, an ECU, and a system indicator light. The code re-registering key should be stored safely and only used for re-registering standard keys. Losing the code re-registering key makes it impossible to register new standard keys, and if all keys are lost or damaged, the entire immobilizer system must be replaced. The keys should not be submerged in water, exposed to high temperatures, placed near magnets or items transmitting electrical signals, handled roughly, ground, altered, or disassembled. Two immobilizer system keys should not be placed on the same key ring to avoid signal interference.
The main switch/steering lock controls the ignition and lighting systems and is used to lock the steering. Positions include "ON" (all electrical circuits and lights on, engine can be started, key cannot be removed), "OFF" (all electrical systems off, key can be removed), and "LOCK" (steering locked, all electrical systems off, key can be removed). A "Parking" position allows hazard and turn signal lights to be on while other electrical systems are off and the key is removed, provided the steering is locked.
The multi-function meter unit displays various information including speedometer, tachometer, clock, fuel meter, eco indicator, transmission gear indicator, drive mode indicator, traction control system indicator, function display, and information display. It also features a setting mode for adjustments. The speedometer shows traveling speed, switchable between kilometers and miles. The tachometer indicates engine speed, with a high-r/min zone at 7750 r/min and above, which should be avoided. The fuel meter shows fuel level, with the last segment flashing when approximately 3.9 L (1.03 US gal, 0.86 Imp.gal) of fuel remains. The eco indicator illuminates during fuel-efficient operation. The transmission gear indicator shows current gear (1-N-2-3-4-5-6) or "—" when the clutch lever is pulled or the vehicle is stopped. The drive mode indicator shows "T" (Touring) or "S" (Sports) mode. The traction control system indicator shows "1", "2", or "OFF".
The motorcycle features a D-mode (drive mode) system with two selections: Touring mode "T" for smooth drivability across speed ranges, and Sports mode "S" for sportier engine response in low- to mid-speed ranges. The drive mode can only be changed when the throttle grip is completely closed and the cruise control system is not operating.
The XT1200ZE is equipped with an electronically adjustable suspension system, allowing adjustment of the rear shock absorber's preload and the damping forces of both front and rear shock absorbers. There are 4 preload settings (Solo riding, Solo riding and luggage, Passenger riding, Passenger riding and luggage) and 3 damping force settings (HARD, STD, SOFT), each with 7 levels (+3 to -3). Adjustments should only be made when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is running.
The cruise control system maintains a set cruising speed, operating in 3rd gear at 50–100 km/h (31–62 mi/h), 4th gear at 50–150 km/h (31–93 mi/h), or 5th/6th gear at 50–180 km/h (31–112 mi/h). It can be activated, set, adjusted, and deactivated via handlebar switches. The system automatically deactivates under certain conditions, such as wheel slip, engine stall, or sidestand lowered.
The motorcycle has a unified brake system (UBS) where applying the front brake lever also applies a portion of the rear brake. For full braking, both the lever and pedal should be used. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) features a dual electronic control system for independent front and rear brake control. If activated, a pulsating sensation may be felt. The ABS warning light indicates system status and potential malfunctions. The traction control system (TCS) helps maintain traction on slippery surfaces by regulating engine power. It has "TCS 1" (default) and "TCS 2" (sporty) modes, and can be turned "OFF".
Key technical specifications include:
Maintenance features include periodic checks and adjustments for various components. The manual provides charts for emission control system maintenance and general maintenance and lubrication, with specified intervals in kilometers and miles, and annual checks. Items marked with an asterisk require specialized tools and skills from a Yamaha dealer.
The manual emphasizes safety, including wearing protective apparel, proper loading, avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning, and safe riding practices. It also provides troubleshooting charts for starting problems and engine overheating.
