Do you have a question about the Yardworks LPS40820-1 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described in the manual is an 8-Inch 20V Lithium-ion Pole Saw (Model LPS40820-1) manufactured by Yardworks. It is designed for trimming small branches and limbs up to 6 inches (15cm) in diameter. This cordless power tool operates on a 20V/2.0Ah DC lithium-ion battery, which is included along with a charger (Model CHL82000-1).

Function Description:

The pole saw is an electric gardening appliance used for pruning trees and shrubs. It features a telescopic pole, allowing users to reach higher branches without the need for a ladder. The saw operates with a chain and guide bar, which are automatically lubricated during use. The device is intended for limbing and pruning, not for felling or bucking. It is crucial to maintain a minimum distance of 50ft (15m) from overhead electrical lines to prevent electrocution.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: LPS40820-1
  • Input: 20V/2.0Ah, DC only
  • Bar Length: 8" Bar (M1430833-1041TL)
  • Weight: 8.6 lbs.
  • Total Extended Length: 9 ft. 4 in.
  • Oil Capacity: .75 ml
  • Battery: (1) 20V 2.0Ah Lithium-ion Battery (Model BL82120-1)
  • Charger: CA Compliant Charger Included (Model No. CHL82000-1)

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The product requires assembly, including connecting the upper and lower sections of the pole, attaching the shoulder strap, and installing the guide bar and chain. The telescopic pole's length is adjustable to achieve the required working height, but it should not be extended above waist height.
  • Battery Charging: The battery pack must be charged before first use, with two to three initial charging/discharging cycles potentially required for maximum run time/capacity. It should be charged with the specified Yardworks 20V Chargers in temperatures between 39 and 104 degrees F, in a cool, dry place. The charger should be disconnected from the power supply when not in use. Fully charged batteries can be stored for up to four weeks at -4°F before needing a recharge, and should be fully recharged every 90 days.
  • Operation:
    • Safety First: Users must read and understand the owner's manual before use. Personal protective equipment, including eye protection, a safety hard hat with a full face shield, hearing protection, non-skid safety shoes, and gloves, is mandatory.
    • Work Area: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of children and bystanders (at least 50ft away). Avoid operating in explosive atmospheres or wet conditions.
    • Starting: Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting the battery pack. Prevent unintentional starting by not carrying the tool with a finger on the switch.
    • Cutting Technique: Always grip the pole and handle firmly with both hands. Cut with the unit running at full speed, maintaining a steady cutting speed. Cut lower branches first. Plan cuts carefully, being aware of the direction branches will fall. Do not stand directly under the branch being cut.
    • Kickback Prevention: To minimize kickback, ensure the cutting area is free of obstructions and avoid letting the guide bar tip contact objects.
    • Limbing and Pruning: The most typical cutting application is at an angle of 60 degrees or less. Make a shallow first cut (1/4 of limb diameter) on the underside, followed by a second cut from the top side outboard from the first cut. A final cut is then made close to the trunk. This procedure prevents stripping bark from the main member.
    • Oil Reservoir: Add oil to the oil reservoir before first use. The chain is automatically lubricated.
  • Storage: Store the pole saw indoors in a dry, high, or locked-up place, out of reach of children. Remove the battery pack when not in use.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Care: Keep the pole and handle dry, clean from oil and grease. After each use, clean the tool with mild soap and a damp cloth (never immerse it in liquid).
  • Inspection: Regularly check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect operation. Inspect the drive sprocket for wear or damage when replacing the chain.
  • Guide Bar Maintenance: The guide bar should be cleaned daily and checked for wear and damage. Reverse the guide bar periodically to distribute wear evenly. Smooth any feathering or burring with a file. Replace the bar if it has worn rails, is bent, cracked, or has spread rails. Guide bars with a sprocket tip should be lubricated weekly with a grease syringe.
  • Chain Maintenance:
    • Sharpening: The chain needs sharpening when wood chips are small and powdery, when the chain must be forced through wood, or when it cuts to one side. Wear gloves. Use a 5/32 in. diameter round file and holder. Maintain a 30-degree top plate filing angle and an 80-degree side plate angle.
    • Depth Gauge Clearance: Maintain a depth gauge clearance of .025 in. (0.6 mm). Use a flat file and a depth gauge jointer to lower all gauges uniformly, restoring the original shape by rounding the front.
    • Tensioning: Properly tension the chain. The chain is correctly tensioned when it can be pulled about 1/8 in. (3mm) away from the bar. Over-tensioning can lead to excessive wear and reduced battery charge.
  • Lubrication System: The chain is automatically lubricated. Use only new bar and chain oil or unused SAE 30 weight motor oil. Check the oil level before each work session and refill if less than 1/4 full.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues like the unit not running, hot/smoking bar and chain, or the motor running but the chain not rotating, along with possible causes and solutions.
  • Battery Disposal: Lithium-ion batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly according to local, state, and federal laws. The RBRC seal indicates that recycling costs have been paid. Do not incinerate or disassemble battery packs.
