This document describes the Affinity Air Handler, a single-piece variable speed air handler designed for use with split-system cooling and heat pumps. It is available in models AVY24 through 60 and SVY48 through 60.
The Affinity Air Handler line is engineered to deliver superior comfort, quiet operation, and flexible application. It features a whisper-quiet variable speed motor that provides precise humidity control and contributes to the lowest operating costs in the industry. The AVY air handler models are shipped ready for installation in all positions: upflow, downflow, horizontal left, or horizontal right, requiring only minor adjustments. The SVY 48 and 60 models are designed specifically for upflow-only applications, featuring a shorter cabinet for situations where reduced height is necessary. No special kits are required to install these deluxe products in any position.
All Johnson Controls Unitary Products air handlers and coils incorporate a Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) to ensure optimal performance and refrigerant control, especially for 13+ SEER systems. Air handlers can be ordered with either an R-22 or R-410A TXV factory installed. For added flexibility, "Flex-coils" are also available without a factory-installed metering device, allowing for field installation of an R-22 or R-410A TXV to match the chosen refrigerant.

The Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) plays a crucial role in refrigerant control, which is essential for the high efficiency of modern HVAC systems. The UPG bolt-on TXV design simplifies installation, allowing for easy conversion of the air handler to the required refrigerant without the need for brazing during replacement or installation.
MicroBlue™ Coated Fins are another significant feature. All air handler coils are treated with this hydrophilic coating, which improves condensate removal during the refrigeration cycle and reduces the possibility of water blow-off. This coating also inhibits the growth of germ-causing microbes, contributing to a healthier home environment.
The ClimaTrak Comfort Settings allow installers to configure an operating cycle for the ECM motor that best suits a particular climate. This feature benefits homeowners by maximizing indoor comfort regardless of whether they live in a dry, temperate, or humid climate.
The Affinity Air Handler offers exceptional application flexibility. The AVY models are designed for multi-position installation (upflow, downflow, horizontal left, or right) without requiring additional kits. The SVY models, while upflow-only, are designed with a shorter cabinet for specific height-restricted applications.
The insulated cabinet, featuring 1" foil-faced insulation (R-4.2), prevents sweating and enhances thermal performance. For environments with extreme humidity, an optional, field-installed external insulating wrap kit is available to provide additional thermal protection.
The factory-sealed design ensures a leakage rate of 2% or less, with or without a field-installed filter, at 1.0" water gauge external static pressure. This contributes to system efficiency and prevents air loss.

The durable finish, both inside and out, contributes to the longevity of the unit. Air handler casings are made of pre-painted galvanized steel, which provides superior paint adhesion and resists corrosion and rust creep. All internal coil sheet metal parts are constructed from G90 galvanized steel, further enhancing durability and resistance to environmental factors.
The bolt-on design of the TXV simplifies replacement or conversion, eliminating the need for complex brazing procedures during service.
The inclusion of circuit breakers in electric heaters (4HK models) provides safe and efficient operation, with sequential operation and temperature dual limit switches.

Optional accessories like the External Insulating Wrap Kit (S1-1JV0117, S1-1JV0121, S1-1JV0124, S1-1JV0224 for SV models) are available for enhanced thermal insulation and to prevent sweating in high-humidity conditions. These wraps feature Velcro edges for easy installation and access.
A Humidistat (S1-2HU16700124) can be integrated with ECM variable speed models to monitor and adjust blower speed and airflow, maintaining desired humidity levels in both winter and summer.
