This document is a user manual for a Zanussi dishwasher, model ZDI 22001XA, titled "GETTING STARTED? EASY." It provides essential information for safe operation, installation, daily use, programming, and maintenance.
The manual begins with crucial safety information, emphasizing that the appliance should be installed and used according to the provided instructions to prevent injuries and damages. It highlights the importance of keeping the instructions for future reference.
Children and Vulnerable People Safety:
The dishwasher can be used by children aged 8 and above, as well as individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, provided they receive supervision and instruction on safe use and understand the associated hazards. Children should not play with the appliance, and all detergents must be kept out of their reach. It is also advised to keep children and pets away from the open appliance door. Cleaning and user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.
General Safety:
The appliance is designed for household and similar applications, including farmhouses, staff kitchen areas, hotels, motels, and bed & breakfast environments. Users are warned not to alter the appliance's specifications. The operating water pressure must be between 0.5 (0.05) and 8 (0.8) bar (Mpa). The maximum capacity is 13 place settings. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, an authorized service center, or similarly qualified persons to avoid hazards. Knives and sharp cutlery should be placed in the cutlery basket with points down or in a horizontal position.
The appliance door should not be left open unsupervised to prevent falls. Before any maintenance, the appliance must be deactivated and disconnected from the mains socket. Water spray and steam should not be used to clean the appliance. Ventilation openings in the base (if applicable) must not be obstructed by a carpet. The dishwasher must be connected to the water mains using the new supplied hose-sets, and old hose sets should not be reused.
Installation
Installation instructions include removing all packaging, avoiding installation or use of a damaged appliance, and ensuring the ambient temperature is not below 0 °C. The appliance should be installed below and adjacent to safe structures, following the provided installation instructions.
Electrical Connection:
A warning about the risk of fire and electrical shock is given. The appliance must be earthed, and the electrical information on the rating plate must match the power supply. A correctly installed shockproof socket should always be used, and multi-plug adapters or extension cables are prohibited. Users must ensure the mains plug and cable are not damaged; any replacement must be done by an Authorized Service Centre. The mains plug should only be connected at the end of installation, ensuring it remains accessible. The appliance should be disconnected by pulling the mains plug, not the cable. The appliance complies with E.E.C. Directives. For UK and Ireland, the appliance has a 13 amp mains plug, and if the fuse needs changing, a 13 amp ASTA (BS 1362) fuse should be used.
Water Connection:
Users must ensure water hoses are not damaged. Before connecting to new pipes or pipes not used for a long time, water should be allowed to flow until clean. Upon first use, it's important to check for leaks. If the water inlet hose is damaged, the mains plug must be immediately disconnected, and an Authorized Service Centre contacted for replacement.
Use
Users are advised not to sit or stand on the open door. Dishwasher detergents are dangerous, and safety instructions on their packaging must be followed. Drinking or playing with the water in the appliance is prohibited. Dishes should not be removed until the program is complete, as detergent residues may be present. The appliance can release hot steam if the door is opened during a program. Flammable products or items wet with flammable products should not be placed in, near, or on the appliance.
Service
For repairs, users should contact an Authorized Service Centre and use only original spare parts. When contacting service, the model, PNC, and serial number from the rating plate should be provided.
Disposal
A warning about injury or suffocation risk is given. The appliance must be disconnected from the mains supply, the mains cable cut and discarded, and the door catch removed to prevent children and pets from getting trapped inside.

- Salt Container: Fill with special dishwasher salt.
- Rinse Aid Dispenser: Fill with special rinse aid.
- Water Tap: Open.
- Initial Program: Start a program to remove any processing residuals.
Adjusting the Water Softener
The manual provides a water hardness table with German degrees (°dH), French degrees (°fH), mmol/l, Clarke degrees, and corresponding water softener levels (1-10). Level 1 is for very soft water (<4 °dH), where salt is not needed. Level 5 is the factory setting (19-22 °dH).
Adjustment Procedure:
- Align the program marker with the 'P' position.
- Ensure the appliance is in program selection mode.
- Press and hold the 'Delay' button and simultaneously turn the program knob counterclockwise until the program marker is aligned with 'P'.
- Release the 'Delay' button when the 'Washing phase' and 'Drying phase' indicators start to flash.
- The current setting is indicated by intermittent flashes of the 'End indicator'. For example, 5 flashes + pause + 5 flashes = level 5.
- Press the 'Delay' button to change the setting. Each press increases the level. After level 10, it cycles back to level 1.
- Turn the knob to 'P' to confirm the setting.
Adding Salt
Before first use, one liter of water should be added to the salt container. Water and salt may spill when filling, which can cause corrosion. To prevent this, a program should be started immediately after filling the salt container.
Adding Rinse Aid
Rinse aid helps dry dishes without streaks and stains and is automatically released during the hot rinse phase. The rinse aid dispenser should be refilled when the indicator (A) becomes clear.
Daily Use
- Open the water tap.
- Select the correct program based on the load type and soil degree. Ensure the appliance is in program selection mode. If the salt indicator is on, fill the salt container.
- Load the baskets.
- Add detergent.
- Start the program.
Adding Detergent
Detergent is added to the dispenser. If the program includes a prewash phase, a small quantity of detergent should also be placed in compartment B.
Adding Multi-Tablets
When using multi-tablets:
- Do not fill the salt container and rinse aid dispenser.
- Adjust the water softener to the lowest level.
- Set the rinse aid dispenser to the lowest position.
Programme Selection Mode
To start a program, the appliance must be in Program selection mode. If the control panel does not show this, a Reset is required.
Reset
Reset cancels a running program or delay start, returning the appliance to Program selection mode.
Starting a Programme
- Open the water tap.
- Close the door.
- Select a program.
- Press the Start button.
Option Delay
This option allows postponing the program start by 3 hours.
- Set the program.
- Press the Delay button.

Opening the Door While the Appliance Operates
If the door is opened during a running program, the appliance stops. It resumes from the point of interruption when the door is closed.
At the End of the Programme
The 'End indicator' illuminates. If the appliance is not deactivated within 5 minutes, all indicators turn off to save energy. Turn the knob to 'P' and close the tap.
Hints and Tips
General:
- Remove large food residues before loading.
- Do not pre-rinse dishes by hand; use the prewash program if needed.
- Always use the full capacity of the baskets.
- Ensure dishes are reached by spray arm nozzles and do not touch or cover each other.
- Use dishwasher detergent, rinse aid, and salt separately or multi-tablets, following packaging instructions.
- Select programs based on load type and soil degree. The ECO program is most efficient for normal soil.
The Water Softener:
- Removes minerals from water to prevent detrimental effects on washing results and the appliance.
- Water hardness is measured in equivalent scales.
- Should be adjusted to local water hardness for optimal washing results.
Using Salt, Rinse Aid and Detergent:
- Only use specific dishwasher products.
- Multi-tablets are suitable for water hardness up to 21 °dH. For harder water, additional rinse aid and salt are needed. For very hard water, solo-detergent (powder, gel, tablets without additional functions), rinse aid, and salt used separately are recommended for optimal cleaning and drying.
- Detergent tablets may not fully dissolve in short programs; use them with long programs to avoid residues.
- Do not use excessive detergent.
What to Do if You Want to Stop Using Multi-Tablets:
- Set the water softener to the highest level.
- Ensure salt and rinse aid containers are full.
- Start the shortest program with a rinsing phase, without detergent or load.
- After the program, adjust the water softener to local water hardness.
- Adjust the released quantity of rinse aid.
- Activate the rinse aid dispenser.
Loading the Baskets:
- Only load dishwasher-safe items.
- Avoid items made of wood, horn, aluminum, pewter, and copper.
- Do not load items that absorb water (sponges, cloths).
- Remove remaining food and soften burned food.
- Place hollow items (cups, glasses, pans) with openings facing down.
- Ensure cutlery and dishes do not bond; mix spoons with other cutlery.
- Ensure glasses do not touch each other.
- Place small items in the cutlery basket.
- Place light items in the upper basket, ensuring they do not move.
- Verify spray arms can move freely before starting.
Before Starting a Programme
- Filters are clean and correctly installed.
- Salt container cap is tight.
- Spray arms are not clogged.
- Dishwasher salt and rinse aid are present (unless using multi-tablets).
- Items are correctly positioned in baskets.
- Program is suitable for load type and soil degree.
- Correct detergent quantity is used.
Unloading the Baskets
- Allow tableware to cool before removal to prevent damage.
- Remove items from the lower basket first, then the upper basket.
- Note: Water may remain on sides and door at the end of the program.
Care and Cleaning
Warning: Before maintenance, deactivate and unplug the appliance. Dirty filters and clogged spray arms reduce washing results; check and clean regularly.
Cleaning the Filters:
- Ensure no food residues or soil around the sump edge.
- Replace the flat filter (C), ensuring it's correctly positioned under the two guides.
- Reassemble filters (A) and (B).
- Replace filter (A) in flat filter (C) and turn clockwise until it locks.
- Incorrect filter position can cause poor washing results and damage.
Cleaning the Spray Arms:
Do not remove spray arms. If holes are clogged, remove soil with a thin pointed object.
External Cleaning:
Clean with a moist soft cloth and neutral detergents only. Do not use abrasive products, cleaning pads, or solvents.
Internal Cleaning:
Clean the interior, including the rubber door gasket, with a soft damp cloth.
- Regular short programs can leave grease and limescale deposits. Run long programs at least twice a month to prevent this.
- Use a specific dishwasher cleaning product monthly to maintain performance, following product instructions.
