Overview

The ZappBug Oven™ is a portable heat treatment device designed for the safe and proven extermination of bed bugs. This owner's manual provides comprehensive instructions for its assembly, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety and effective bed bug eradication.

Function Description:

The ZappBug Oven™ utilizes heat to kill bed bugs at all life stages, including eggs, nymphs, and adults. Research indicates that bed bugs die quickly at temperatures at or above 120°F (49°C), and begin to die at temperatures above 113°F. The device is designed to create a controlled environment where items can be heated to these lethal temperatures, ensuring thorough extermination. It operates by adding heat to the air from the room in which it is located, making it crucial to use indoors with an ambient room temperature above 70°F (21°C) to achieve optimal bed bug killing temperatures. The ZappBug Oven™ is a safe and chemical-free method for treating belongings infested with bed bugs, offering an alternative to traditional pesticide treatments.

Usage Features:

The ZappBug Oven™ is designed for ease of use and portability. The main components include a folding oven, a ZappBug™ Heater, support blocks, a support net, a one-touch timer, a wireless thermometer, and a carry bag.

  1. Unfolding the Oven: The oven is designed to unfold easily. It's normal for one side to appear warped, which facilitates folding and does not affect functionality. Shaking the oven can help ensure all side panels are fully extended.

  2. Connecting the Heater: The heater connects to a ventilation tube on the oven. The base of the heater is placed into the tube, and the tube is stretched around the heater, observing "Do Not Cover" markings. Small gaps between the heater and the ventilation tube are normal and do not allow bed bugs to escape, as they experience thermal shock and cannot move towards the heater when it's on. It's crucial to turn the heater on before placing potentially infested items inside.

  3. Support Configuration: The oven features a unique and modular support system to accommodate various items.

    • Support Blocks: These are used for rigid, heavy items like luggage and small furniture, ensuring ventilation around them.
    • Support Blocks with Net: For loose items such as books and clothing, the support net is attached to Velcro strips inside the oven, providing ventilation. It is critical to allow air to flow freely around all items being treated.
  4. Turning On the Heater: The heater is plugged into the included Belkin timer, which is then plugged into an electrical outlet. The timer should be set to six hours, and the "on" button pressed. A safety note advises against using extension cords rated below 1500 watts, as the ZappBug Heater draws 1500 watts of electrical power.

  5. Inserting Items for Heat Treatment: Items are placed inside the oven on top of the support blocks or support net. To ensure adequate airflow, items should not touch the walls or ceiling of the oven. For effective treatment, luggage should be opened and items "fluffed" to promote air circulation. The wireless thermometer probe is placed in the deepest, most insulated part of the items being treated. After placing items, the top cover is zipped closed. The manual likens this process to drying clothes in the sun, emphasizing that densely packed items take longer to heat.

  6. Waiting for Appropriate Time: The goal is to maintain a temperature of 120°F (49°C) or above for 60 minutes after the thermometer in the deepest part of the items reaches this temperature. This ensures that all bed bugs, regardless of their location within the items, are exposed to lethal temperatures. The included timer can be set to six hours, allowing the ZappBug Oven™ to shut off automatically after the recommended treatment time.

  7. Removing Items After Heat Treatment: If the home is infested, treated items should be immediately placed into sealed plastic bags or containers to prevent re-infestation.

  8. Folding and Packing Up: The oven is designed to fold compactly for storage. The top zipper is closed, leaving a 4-inch gap for air to escape. The oven is then placed on its side, a corner is stepped on to collapse it, and the side panels are folded flat. The folding oven, thermometer, timer, support blocks, and net are stored inside the carry bag, while the heater is stored separately.

Maintenance Features:

The manual emphasizes proper assembly and use to prevent hazardous conditions and ensure the longevity of the device.

  • Preventing Overheating: Do not block the air intake or exhaust vents on the heater, or the exhaust vent on the folding box, as this can cause the heater to overheat.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Always monitor the temperature inside the ZappBug Oven™ with the wireless thermometer to ensure it never exceeds a safe level, especially when treating fragile items or electronics. Users are advised to consult manufacturers of specific items (e.g., electronics) for maximum safe temperatures.
  • Placement: The ZappBug Oven™ should always be placed on surfaces at room temperature (above 70°F) and not directly on cold floors like concrete.
  • Cleaning: While not explicitly detailed, general care for fabric and electronic components would involve keeping them clean and dry. The warranty information implies that defects or malfunctions caused by abuse, misuse, neglect, carelessness, or accident are not covered, suggesting that proper handling and care are essential for maintenance.

The ZappBug Oven™ is backed by a 120-day limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship from the date of original retail purchase. This warranty is valid only for the original purchaser and covers all included components. It does not cover damage from improper use, alterations, or failure to follow manual instructions. The warranty also explicitly states that it does not cover damage to electronics placed inside the oven or any property damage resulting from improper operation. For service, customers are directed to contact ZappBug customer service via email or phone.
