RECALL button
When taking a square footage,
volume, or double segment
measurement, you can use this button to scan back
through any of the previous segments to check a
number. Each segment bar will flash to show you
which number you are seeing and if you are
concerned with that particular length being accurate,
you can take a replacement measurement by pressing
the READ button again while it is flashing. It will
then replace the flashing segment’s number with your
new reading and update your calculations.
HINTS
1. Each measurement clears the preceding one or
group of area/volume measurements. You can also
clear a measurement by pressing a mode button.
2. Ultrasonic signals radiate in a cone shape,
approximately ±5° from center. To get accurate
readings you must measure to a target with a large,
flat, hard area such as a wall.
3. Obstacles in the signal’s path, such as furniture and
draperies, interfere with the signal, producing errors or
inaccurate readings.
4. Accuracy will vary depending on environmental
conditions.
5. The DM S50/S50L cannot measure through glass,
but will measure TO glass.
6. “Err” will be displayed if the target is not a good
ultrasonic reflector (e.g., thick carpet or draperies) or
the result exceeds the working range of the unit.
AREA button
For area measurements, select this but-
ton and take a measurement across and
lengthwise of a room. Remember that the length of
the tool is included in your measurement, so place the
back end of the unit against a wall on one side and
shoot across to an open area of wall directly opposite.
The first number will show on your screen and the
blinking line will prompt you to take a second reading
across the room in the other direction. The resulting
calculation will show on the screen.
VOLUME button
For volume measurements, you fol-
low the same steps selecting the
VOLUME function button and taking measurements
following the prompting bars on the display. Be sure
to place the tool base against the surface and point
perpendicular to the wall. If unsure of any of the three
readings, press the RECALL button and you can step
back through each of them with a flashing direction
bar guiding your selection. Each number can be
re-shot using this “Recall” mode and pressing the
READ button while that segment bar is flashing.
DOUBLE SEGMENT button
Press this button before measuring
and you will be able to take two measure-
ments that will be automatically added together. This
is particularly helpful when measuring distances
longer than 50 feet (15 m). From a marked spot in the
middle of an area, you can take a reading in opposite
directions to measure a longer space.
4. Press READ button to measure. Holding button
down will allow continuous reading if you wish to
move unit forward or back for positioning an item.
5. Each measurement erases previous one.
6. In the model DM S50L, pressing the READ button
half way will turn on laser circle for adjusting your
position to your target. Depressing fully will then
take the measurement reading.
7. This unit will automatically turn itself off after 30
seconds of inactivity. When you press the
PWR button
to resume, the display will still show the last reading
that was on the screen.

BATTERY INSTALLATION
1. Open battery door on back of case.
2. Connect a 9-volt battery to battery clip.
3. Insert battery into case and replace battery door.
When the low battery symbol comes on and stays on,
it is time to change the battery. A dim display or
inaccurate measurements also indicate a weak
battery. Batteries last approximately 2 years under
normal conditions, or for 8 hours of continuous laser
use in the model S50L, with a fresh alkaline battery.
TAKING MEASUREMENTS
1. Turn on using PWR button. You will be in
feet/inches mode or the last mode you used. You may
select between ft./in. or metric measurement by
pressing the ft/m button.
2. Select the type of measurement you wish to make
by pressing a button on the left.
3. Position and point unit squarely to the target.
Measurement will start from back of the unit,
which means the length of the tool is included in
the number you see.
This tapeless, ultrasonic tool instantly measures
interior room dimensions from 2 to 50 feet
(.6 to 15 m) with one-touch simplicity. Function
buttons provide prompting for easy calculations
of area and volume. Model S50L also provides a

dirección perpendicular a ésta.

muebles y cortinas
,
interfieren con la señal,
por lo que
producen errores o medidas imprecisas
.
4. La exactitud será variable, dependiendo de las
condiciones ambientales.
5. El DM S50/S50L no puede medir a través del vidrio,
pero sí HASTA el vidrio.
6. Si el objeto no es un buen reflector ultrasónico, la pan-
talla mostrará el mensaje “Err”.

Do you have a question about the Zircon Sonic Measure DM S50 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

Zircon Sonic Measure (Models DM S50 and DM S50L)

The Zircon Sonic Measure is a tapeless, ultrasonic tool designed for instantly measuring interior room dimensions. It offers a simple, one-touch operation for various measurement tasks, making it suitable for both professional and home use.

Function Description

This device utilizes ultrasonic technology to determine distances. It can measure interior room dimensions ranging from 2 to 50 feet (0.6 to 15 meters). Beyond simple length measurements, the Zircon Sonic Measure provides function buttons that prompt users for easy calculations of area and volume. The Model S50L further enhances usability by incorporating a laser circle, which helps identify the target for additional verification, ensuring more accurate and confident measurements.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Measurement Range: 2 to 50 feet (0.6 to 15 meters).
  • Measurement Principle: Ultrasonic signals.
  • Ultrasonic Signal Radiation: Cone shape, approximately ±5° from the center. This implies that for accurate readings, the target should be a large, flat, hard area like a wall.
  • Laser (Model S50L only):
    • Classification: Class IIIa laser product.
    • Wavelength: 635 nm – 650 nm.
    • Power: <5 mW peak power.
    • Safety Warning: Avoid direct eye exposure at all times.
  • Battery: Requires a 9-volt battery.
  • Battery Life: Approximately 2 years under normal conditions, or 8 hours of continuous laser use for the S50L model with a fresh alkaline battery. A low battery symbol, dim display, or inaccurate measurements indicate a weak battery.
  • Automatic Shut-off: The unit automatically turns itself off after 30 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.
  • Measurement Limitations:
    • Cannot measure through glass, but will measure to glass.
    • Obstacles in the signal's path (e.g., furniture, draperies) can interfere with the signal, leading to errors or inaccurate readings.
    • "Err" will be displayed if the target is not a good ultrasonic reflector (e.g., thick carpet or draperies) or if the measurement result exceeds the working range of the unit.
    • Accuracy may vary depending on environmental conditions.

Usage Features

The Zircon Sonic Measure is designed for ease of use with several dedicated function buttons:

  • PWR Button: Turns the unit on and off. When resuming from automatic shut-off, the display will still show the last reading.
  • ft/m Button: Toggles between feet/inches and metric units (meters). Changing this mode will not erase current readings.
  • READ Button: Initiates a measurement. Holding this button down allows for continuous reading, useful for positioning items or finding a specific distance. In the DM S50L model, pressing the READ button halfway activates the laser circle for target adjustment, and fully depressing it takes the measurement.
  • LENGTH Button (and Continuous Reading): The tool automatically powers on in this mode for single length measurements. If in another mode, pressing this button returns to single length measurement. In this mode, holding the READ button enables continuous measurement for positioning equipment.
  • AREA Button: Used for calculating the area of a room. After selecting this mode, the user takes two measurements: one across the room and one lengthwise. The first measurement appears on the screen, and a blinking line prompts for the second. The resulting area calculation is then displayed.
  • VOLUME Button: Used for calculating the volume of a room. Similar to area measurement, the user follows prompting bars on the display to take three measurements. It's crucial to place the tool base against the surface and point perpendicularly to the wall.
  • DOUBLE SEGMENT Button: Allows for taking two separate measurements that are automatically added together. This feature is particularly useful for measuring distances longer than the unit's 50-foot range (e.g., by measuring from a central point in opposite directions).
  • RECALL Button: Displays previously measured lengths. When taking area, volume, or double segment measurements, this button allows users to scan back through previous segments to check individual numbers. Each segment bar flashes to indicate the selected number. If a measurement is questionable, a replacement can be taken by pressing the READ button while the segment bar is flashing, which updates the calculation.

Taking Measurements:

  1. Turn on the unit using the PWR button. The unit will be in feet/inches mode or the last mode used.
  2. Select the desired measurement unit (ft./in. or metric) by pressing the ft/m button.
  3. Choose the type of measurement (length, area, volume, double segment) by pressing the corresponding button on the left side of the unit.
  4. Position and point the unit squarely to the target. Measurements are taken from the back of the unit, meaning the tool's length is included in the displayed reading.
  5. Press the READ button to take a measurement. Each new measurement erases the previous one (unless in continuous reading mode).

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Installation:
    1. Open the battery door on the back of the case.
    2. Connect a 9-volt battery to the battery clip.
    3. Insert the battery into the case and replace the battery door.
  • Battery Replacement Indicators: A low battery symbol that stays on, a dim display, or inaccurate measurements all indicate that the battery needs to be changed.
  • Cleaning: While not explicitly detailed, general electronic device care suggests keeping the unit clean and free of dust and debris to ensure optimal performance.

Warranty Information

The Zircon Sonic Measure comes with a LIMITED 1 YEAR WARRANTY. Zircon Corporation warrants the product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase.
