ITU-TH.323isbasedonmultimediacommunicationserieswhichdoesnotguaranteethe
QoSinpacket-switchednetwork.ThersteditionofH.323recommendationsisissuedby
theITUStudyGroup15,SG-15in1996.ThefollowingfouraspectsofITU-TH.323are
explainedasfollows:
lConcept
TheH.323hasdevelopedamultimediacommunicationsstandardwithoutQoS
guaranteesonPBN,thesenetworksdominatetoday'sdesktopnetworksystems,
includingEthernet,fastEthernet,tokenRing,FDDItechnologybasedonTCP/IP ,
IPX.Therefore,theH.323standardprovidesthetechnicalfoundationandsafeguard
formultimediacommunicationsonLAN,WANandinternet.
lComponents
H.323isalsoaframeworkconstructionwhichincludesMCU,MC,MP,GW,andGK,
thebasicunitisthe"domain".IntheH.323system,theso-calleddomainreferstoa
gatekeepermanagementGK，MCU,MC,MPandthecollectionofallterminals.A
domaincontainsatleastoneterminal,andmusthaveoneandonlyonegatekeeper.
EachlogicalcomponentofH.323systemsiscalledH.323entitywhichincludes:
terminals,gateways,MCU,MC,andMP .Terminals,gateways,andMCUarethe
H.323endpointdeviceswhicharethelogicalunitinthenetwork,theendpointdevice
cancalleachotherandbecalledbyotherendpoints;whileanotherentity-gateway
cannotbecalled.

ThenetworkunitoftheH.323systemaddagatekeeper(GK)toprocessaddress
resolution.IfthenetworkismixedwithH.320andH.323,theconferenceneedsto
conguretheH.320andH.323GWtoachievetheinterpretabilityofthetwosystems.
IP-basednetworkH.323systemincludethefollowingfourentities:GK,GW,MCUand
terminal.
