Why A.O. Smith Water Heater has no hot water?

  If your A.O. Smith Water Heater isn't producing hot water, it could be due to a hot water supply valve being turned off. If you have Surface Mount Control Models, check the thermostat/ECO controls. For Electronic Control Models, verify the Operating Set Point and Differential Set Points. Also, for Electronic Control Models, make sure both enable/disable circuits at the CCB’s J7 plug/socket connection are closed circuits.

Smith Water Heater is tripping the breaker, ensure that the power supply breaker/fusing to the water heater meets the minimum required fuse/wire/breaker sizing, referring to the voltage and amperage listed on the water heater rating plate. Also, verify that the internal power supply phase wiring is configured correctly. Check for any pinched or shorted wiring, whether it's internal or in the power supply wiring.

  If your A.O. Smith Water Heater displays a “No Current Detected” alert, first ensure the power supply to the water heater matches the voltage listed on the rating plate. For 3-phase models, check for a dead leg of power. Also, check the power circuit fuses, heating elements, and contactors. Inspect the power circuit wiring to heating elements from the Power Distribution Block, to fuse blocks, to contactors, to heating elements, referring to the wiring diagram and Contactor Configuration illustration. Correct any miswiring and repair or replace damaged wiring as needed. Check the Element Sensor J12, J13, J14 plug/socket connections at the CCB for wear or damage, ensuring they are properly connected. Finally, check the Element Sensors themselves and replace any that are defective.

What causes 'Energy Cut Out (ECO)' fault in A.O. Smith DVE - 120 Water Heater?

  If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is showing an 'Energy Cut Out (ECO)' fault, check the J5 plug/socket connections at the CCB to ensure they are properly connected. Check the ECO continuity and for 120 VAC to and from the ECO. Replace the Immersion Temperature Probe if the ECO switch contacts remain open at normal operating temperatures. Also, inspect the water system piping to ensure no external heat sources are adding heat to the water inside the water heater.

  If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is displaying a “Temp Probe Short” fault, check for pinched or shorted wires between the J5 plug/socket connection on the CCB and the Immersion Temperature Probe. Repair or replace any damaged wiring. Also, check the resistance of the temperature sensor inside the Immersion Temperature Probe; replace the probe if the measured resistance is below 390 ohms.

  If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is showing a 'Temp Probe Open' fault, check the J5 plug/socket connections at the CCB to ensure they are properly connected. Check the resistance of the temperature sensor inside the Immersion Temperature Probe. Also, check for pinched or broken wiring between the Immersion Temperature Probe and the J5 plug/socket connection on the CCB; repair or replace damaged wiring as necessary.

  If you're not getting enough hot water from your A.O. Smith Water Heater, it might be undersized. If you have Surface Mount Control Models, check the thermostat/ECO controls. For Electronic Control Models, verify the Operating Set Point and Differential Set Points. Also, for Electronic Control Models ensure the water heater is not in the Economy Mode during peak demand periods and ensure the time is set correctly (daylight savings etc). Ensure the power supply matches the listed voltage on the water heater rating plate. Check for a water supply piping leak or restriction, such as lime/scale or a partially closed valve. Check Contactors on Electronic Control Models. Check both enable/disable circuits at the CCB’s J7 socket on Electronic Control Models. If either/both circuits are being used...
