What to do if A.O. Smith GPCR Water Heater has problem with the internal circuit?
    • M
      Mary GentrySep 12, 2025
Try turning the power to the water heater off for 10 seconds and then back on. If the problem continues, replace the gas control valve.

Why is my A.O. Smith GPCR leaking T&P?
    • M
      Morgan WhiteAug 25, 2025
A leaking T&P valve may be due to thermal expansion in a closed water system; install a thermal expansion tank, and do not plug the T&P valve. It could also be caused by an improperly seated valve; check the relief valve for proper operation, and do not plug the T&P valve.

What to do if A.O. Smith GPCR Water Heater vent pipe too hot?
    • S
      Sherri GonzalezAug 26, 2025
If the vent pipe is too hot, it could be due to a defective air flow restrictor. In this case, take the unit out of service immediately and call the manufacturer’s representative. Another cause might be insufficient dilution air mixing with flue gases, requiring proper dilution air for combustion. If the dilution air is too hot, check for nearby heat sources or blockages of the dilution air intake. Finally, an incorrect burner orifice can cause this issue, so install the correct orifice.

What to do if A.O. Smith GPCR has yellow flame?
    • K
      Kristen ShannonAug 27, 2025
A yellow flame may be caused by dirt in the burner ports. Turn off the heater and gas, then clean the burner head. It could also be caused by a restricted combustion air path. Check the dilution air intake, exhaust venting, and air openings in the bottom base pan for obstructions or blockage. Insufficient dilution air for proper combustion is another potential cause, so check the dilution air intake for obstructions or blockage.

What to do if A.O. Smith GPCR Water Heater has hot water odors?
    • M
      Mr. Samuel AliAug 29, 2025
Hot water odors can be caused by high sulfate or mineral content in the water supply. Drain and flush the heater thoroughly, then refill it. Bacteria in the water supply can also cause odors, so chlorinate the water supply.

What to do if A.O. Smith GPCR Water Heater system in lockout?
    • B
      Benjamin Torres MDAug 31, 2025
If the system is in lockout, it might be because the gas supply is off or too low to operate. Another cause could be a hot surface ignitor not positioned correctly. Also, check for low voltage to the water heater, or incorrect electrical polarity to the unit, and correct it.

Why A.O. Smith Water Heater not enough hot water?
    • M
      martinkathrynNov 20, 2025
Several factors can cause a lack of hot water. The “ON/OFF” control switch might be turned off, so ensure it's in the “ON” position. The blower could be unplugged; plug it back into the 115 Vac outlet. There might be no power at the outlet, requiring repair service. Other potential causes include a defective thermostat or control harness (replace them if needed), an open high limit control circuit (replace the thermostat), a defective blower motor (replace the blower assembly), or a thermostat set too low (turn the temperature control higher). If the heater is undersized, reduce hot water use. Low gas pressure requires contacting a dealer. Unusually cold incoming water necessitates allowing more reheat time, and leaking hot water pipes or fixtures should be checked and repaired by a plumbe...
