Function Description

The device is a flammable material storage refrigerator or freezer designed for scientific/medical applications. It features a digital microprocessor temperature controller that provides temperature control and a constant readout of the sample temperature inside the unit. The D-100 alarm system is integrated to monitor the interior sample temperature and trigger alarms in case of errors or power failures. The unit is designed to store flammable materials safely, adhering to laboratory safety rules.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Temperature Control: Digital microprocessor temperature controller.
  • Alarm System: D-100 alarm system with visual and audible alarms, remote alarm capability, and battery backup for power failure.
  • Refrigerant: Natural hydrocarbon refrigerant (R290 or R600a), as per U.S. Code of Federal Regulation 40 Part 82.
  • Electrical Requirements: Supply circuit must conform to NEC (National Electrical Code). Voltage, cycle, phase, and amp requirements are on the cabinet Serial-Data plate. Supply voltage should not vary more than 5% from serial plate ratings.
  • Grounding: Requires a 3-prong grounded outlet.
  • Ambient Temperature Range: Designed for climate-controlled environments between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C) for optimal temperature performance.
  • Clearance Space: Requires 2 to 3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of clearance around the refrigerator for maintenance and service.
  • Probe Access Port: Equipped with a 3/8" (9.5 mm) probe access port for independent probe installation.
  • Remote Alarm System (SPST Relay): Wired with gray and white leads, located either underneath the top sign canopy or behind the unit next to the compressor. Rating: 3 amps.
  • Alarm Delay Settings:
    • Visual & Audible Alarm Delay (Ad): Adjustable (recommended 0 minutes).
    • Remote Alarm Delay (rD): Adjustable (factory setting 20 minutes).
    • Mute Duration "Ringback" (Snd): Factory setting 120 minutes.
  • Temperature Readout: Can display in Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).
  • Alarm Points:
    • High Temp Alarm Point (ALU): Factory default 10°C or 50°F (refrigerator), 0°C or °F (freezer).
    • Low Temp Alarm Point (ALL): Factory default 0°C or 32°F (refrigerator), -30°C or °F (freezer).
  • Set Point (SET): Factory default 3°C or 38°F (refrigerator), -24°C or -12°F (freezer).
  • Temperature Differential (Hy): Factory default 3°C or 5°F (not recommended to change).
  • Display Choice (Lod): P3 (sample probe) for normal operation, P1 (air probe) for service.
  • Calibration/Offset (OT/O3): Adjustable for air (OT) and sample (O3) probes.
  • Door Ajar Alarm (dA): Optional feature, adjustable duration from 0 to 5 minutes.

Usage Features

  • Installation:
    1. Find a suitable location with appropriate ambient temperature and clearance.
    2. Level the unit (recommended slight tilt towards the back, about 5 degrees, for non-self-closing doors and condensate flow).
    3. Set up shelves (if applicable).
    4. Install the optional monitor probe through the dedicated 3/8" port, sealing with electrical putty. Do not run probes through door gaskets.
    5. Plug in the power cord to a properly grounded wall outlet.
  • Operation:
    • The unit is factory-set for optimal temperature performance; adjustments are generally not needed.
    • The controller displays the interior temperature (P3 for sample-simulated temperature by default).
    • Alarm Activation: Upon receiving the unit, activate the D-100 alarm system battery backup for power failure.
    • Temperature History: Press [UP] to view maximum temperature, [DOWN] to view minimum temperature. Clear history by pressing [UP] and [DOWN] simultaneously for 4 seconds.
    • Set Point Check: Press [SET] to view the current set point.
    • Menu Navigation: Press [MENU] to enter user-adjustable settings. Use [UP] or [DOWN] to select settings, [MENU] to confirm changes.
    • Changing Settings:
      • Set Point: Press and hold [SET] until °C or °F icon blinks. Use [UP]/[DOWN] to change value, [SET] to confirm.
      • Other Settings (Hy, ALL, ALU, Lod, CF, O3, OT, US, LS, dA, rD, Snd): Press and hold [SET] and [DOWN] simultaneously until "Hy" appears. Use [UP]/[DOWN] to scroll, [SET] to enter/confirm. Exit by holding [SET] and [UP] or by leaving idle for 10 seconds.
      • Temperature Readout (°C/°F): Press and hold the [LIGHT] icon button for 5 seconds.
    • Alarm Conditions:
      • High Temp Alarm (HA): Displayed when temperature reaches ALU set point.
      • Low Temp Alarm (LA): Displayed when temperature reaches ALL set point.
      • Temperature Sensor Failure Alarm (SA).
      • Door Ajar Alarm (dA).
      • Main Power Failure Alarm (PF): Displayed with flashing red background; audible alarm and remote alarm contact activated. Battery backup supports the system for 8 hours.
    • Muting Alarms: The "Snd" feature acts as a "nudge" alarm, ringing back after 120 minutes if an alarm condition persists after muting.
    • Remote Alarm System: During non-alarm state, the system is CLOSED (NC). During an alarm state, it is OPEN. Power failure immediately activates the remote alarm.
  • Safety:
    • DO NOT store unsealed chemical material inside. Corrosive fumes can damage refrigeration coils and void warranty.
    • DO NOT operate in the presence of explosive fumes.
    • Keep all flame sources or heat objects away.
    • Disconnect power before servicing.
    • Follow all laboratory safety rules.
    • Develop an emergency backup plan for contents in case of unit issues.
    • WARNING: Do not use extension cords or adapter plugs. Do not cut, remove, or bypass the grounding prong.
    • DO NOT connect to a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) circuit.
    • DO NOT use multi-outlet strips or plugs.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning:
    • Interior and Door Liners: Use 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. Wring excess water from sponge/cloth before cleaning near electrical parts.
    • Door Gaskets: Wipe with a clean soft cloth.
    • Shelves: Wash with soap and water; do not wash removable shelves in a dishwasher.
    • Exterior and Handles: Use soap and water or non-abrasive glass cleaner. Do not use commercial household cleaners, ammonia, or alcohol. Use a soft cloth for smooth handles; do not use a dry cloth.
    • Glass: Clean with mild detergent and water on a soft cloth/sponge, rinse, and wipe dry.
    • Sliding Door Units (Track): Remove doors, clean track with mild detergent and water on a soft cloth/sponge, rinse, and wipe dry. Contact technical support if doors are difficult to remove.
  • Condenser Maintenance:
    • Frequency: Clean the condenser every 30 days (or more frequently in dirty environments). Failure to clean voids warranty.
    • Procedure:
      1. Disconnect electrical power.
      2. Remove the louvered grill.
      3. Use eye protection.
      4. Vacuum dirt from condenser coil fins with a soft brush.
      5. Ensure you can see through the condenser unit (use a flashlight).
      6. If necessary, use compressed air, CO2, or Nitrogen (max 30 psi) to blow through coils.
      7. Replace the louvered grill.
      8. Reconnect electrical power.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues like unit not running, not maintaining proper temperature, appliance running too long, warm external wall, compressor noises, moisture collection (inside/outside), and odor.
  • Moisture During Summer: Notes that condensation increases in summer and usually self-resolves as weather cools. Keeping the unit in an air-conditioned, low-humidity space helps. Check location, door sealing, door opening frequency, and water trap in the drain tube.
  • Service: For mechanical repair involving hydrocarbon refrigerant (recharge, compressor replacement), only a certified refrigeration technician should perform the work. For advanced settings or technical support, contact the manufacturer's technical support department.
  • Warranty: Horizon Scientific, Inc. provides a warranty for defects in material and workmanship, starting two weeks from shipment. An additional warranty covers hermetically and semi-hermetically sealed compressors. The warranty is not transferable and does not cover consequential damages, alteration, neglect, abuse, misuse, accident, transit damage, fire, flood, or external causes. Claims must include model/serial number, proof of purchase, and installation date. Repairs must be authorized by Horizon.
