Specifications

Overview

The Acaia Orion Bean Doser is a sophisticated device designed for precise, weight-based dosing of green or roasted coffee beans. It offers a blend of speed, accuracy, and user-friendly features, making it suitable for various coffee preparation needs.

Function Description

The primary function of the Acaia Orion Bean Doser is to dispense coffee beans by weight. It can handle portions ranging from 5 grams up to a maximum of 3000 grams per dose, with an impressive accuracy of +/- 2 beans (approximately 0.5 grams). This precision is crucial for consistent coffee brewing and roasting.

The device operates with a fast weight-based on-demand dosing capability. For instance, it can dose 225 grams (1/2 lbs) in just 12 seconds and 20 grams in 3 seconds, all while maintaining a tight error margin of 2-3 beans. This speed makes it efficient for busy environments or high-volume dosing.

Beyond simple dosing, the Orion also functions as a smart industrial weighing scale. In its Weighing Scale Mode, it can measure weights up to 3000 grams, providing a versatile tool for various weighing tasks.

A notable feature is its Statistic Tracking System, which allows users to monitor statistical information such as the total number of doses or the total weight dispensed during a dosing session. This data can be valuable for tracking usage and optimizing workflows.

Usage Features

The Acaia Orion is designed for ease of use, incorporating an intuitive dial interface and multiple operational modes.

  • Initial Setup: Before first use, the bean hopper should be rinsed and cleaned. After drying, it attaches to the top of the unit. A container should be placed on the weighing platform to prevent accidental dispensing. The device is powered by connecting the power cord, and then coffee beans can be added to the hopper.

  • General Operation: To begin, ensure the weighing platform is clean. Turn on the Orion by pressing the Power button and place a container on the platform. The target weight can be set by short-pressing Power, adjusting the value with the Dial, and confirming with another short press of Power. Dosing starts by pressing the Dose button. If the display shows [CUP][rESEE ], it indicates that a container needs to be placed on the platform. Once a dose is complete, pressing Power returns the device to the dosing state.

  • Dial Interface: The new dial interface allows for easy access to different functions and three preset modes for storing target weights. Rotating the dial enables users to switch between presets or modes.

  • Dosing Modes: The Orion offers two main dosing modes:

    • Mode 1 - Manual Dosing Mode: This is the default mode. Users select a preset by rotating the Dial, adjust the value if needed by short-pressing Power and rotating the Dial, then confirm with Power. Pressing Dose starts the dosing process. The Orion will dispense beans until the desired weight is reached, indicated by a solid green LED. A unique "pulse" function allows users to add a few more beans manually at the end of a dose by pressing the Dose button multiple times. If a container is removed or the platform is touched during dosing, a [701 5E ] message will appear, requiring the user to dose again.
    • Mode 2 - Auto Dosing Mode: In this mode, the Orion automatically doses whenever a container is placed on the platform. An 'A' indicator appears on the top left of the display. To enter this mode, long-press Power and select "Auto" with the Dial, then confirm with Power. After selecting or adjusting a preset weight, pressing Dose starts automatic dosing, and the display will show [-E884 ]. To initiate the first dose, press Dose again. After removing a completed dose, the display will show [rERd4 ], indicating readiness for the next container. The pulse function is also available in this mode.
    • Mode 3 - Weighing Mode: This mode transforms the Orion into a smart industrial weighing scale with a 3000-gram capacity. A 'W' indicator appears on the top left of the display. In this mode, the Power button acts as "Reset Mode/Zero," and the Dose button acts as "Tare."
  • Presets: The Orion allows for storing three desired weights as presets. For example, preset 1 could be 18g, preset 2 at 20g, and preset 3 at 35g. These values can be easily adjusted.

  • Empty Hopper Function: To empty the bean hopper, a long press of the Dose button initiates continuous dispensing. A short press of the Dose button stops the process. An 'E' indicator appears on the top left of the display during this operation.

  • Dosing Speed Settings: Users can adjust the dosing speed to prioritize either accuracy or speed. The available settings are:

    • PrEC (Precision): Default speed, high accuracy.
    • FASt (Fast): Faster speed, default accuracy (227 grams in 12 seconds), recommended for doses of 100 grams or more.
    • GrEEn (Green Bean): Default speed for green beans or light roast beans.
  • Zero Tracking Setting: This function compensates for weight readout fluctuations at the zero point, improving scale usability. It can be set from 0.5d to 3d (where d is the division, e.g., 0.1g). 2d is generally recommended. Turning it off is not advised as zero indication can drift with temperature changes.

  • Key Sound Setting: Users can turn the beeping sound on or off.

  • Default Weighing Unit: The default unit can be set to grams (g) or ounces (oZ).

  • LED Indicators:

    • Green Light: Blinking green indicates dosing in progress. A solid green light signifies that dosing is complete and accurate.
    • Yellow Light: A lit yellow light warns that the current dose is at least 0.5 grams less or more than the target amount, suggesting the use of the pulse function or bean removal.
    • Red Light: A red light indicates a system error. Restarting the Orion is recommended; if the problem persists, contact support.

Maintenance Features

The Acaia Orion includes features and guidelines to ensure its longevity and accurate performance.

  • Battery Charge: The Charging indicator displays when the battery is charging and turns off when the charger is removed. It's important to note that the Orion ONLY charges with the AC-DC adapter included in the package and not with other USB-C chargers.

  • Calibration: For maintaining accuracy, the Orion can be calibrated. While in Weighing Mode and with the unit set to grams, rapidly press the Dose button until the display shows [CAL ] and then [ 500 ]. Place a 500-gram calibration weight on the platform, and the doser will execute the calibration. The display shows [-End- ] upon completion. Other calibration weights (100g, 1000g, 1500g, 2000g, 3000g) can also be used, but Acaia calibration weights or F1/F2 Class weights are recommended for highest accuracy.

  • Firmware Updates: The device includes an "About" setting that shows the current firmware version. Firmware can be updated using the Orion Updater application available on the Acaia website. If the Orion enters update mode (UPDREE) and no action is taken, it will automatically turn off and exit update mode after 1 minute and 30 seconds.

  • Error Codes: The Orion provides error codes to help diagnose issues:

    • Error 100: Code error
    • Error 101: EEPROM error
    • Error 102: AD read error
    • Error 303: Unable to make zero point because initial weight exceeds limit (250% of capacity).
    • Overload/Underload indicators: Displayed when weight is over maximum or under minimum capacity.
    • Error 304: Calibration required in a stable environment.
    • Error 802: Unable to tare because weight exceeds tare range.
    • Error 803: Unable to tare due to unstable weight.
    • Error 904: Password error (default is 0000).

These features collectively ensure that the Acaia Orion Bean Doser is a reliable, accurate, and user-friendly tool for coffee professionals and enthusiasts alike.
