Overview

This manual describes the operation of the BLUETOOTH® HANDSFREELINK® system, which allows users to make and receive phone calls hands-free in their vehicle. The system integrates with the vehicle's audio system, enabling communication without the need to handle a mobile phone.

Function Description

The BLUETOOTH® HANDSFREELINK® system facilitates hands-free calling and, in some cases, streaming audio functions within a vehicle. Its primary purpose is to enhance safety by minimizing driver distraction, as it allows users to manage phone calls using voice commands and integrated vehicle controls rather than directly interacting with their mobile device. The system supports making calls by dialing numbers, using an imported phonebook, accessing call history, or utilizing speed dial entries. It also allows users to answer incoming calls.

Usage Features

The system is designed for ease of use, primarily through a combination of physical buttons and voice commands.

Controls and Interface:

  • Pick-up Button: Used to access Speed Dial/Call History on the multi-information display or to answer an incoming call.
  • Hang-up/Back Button: Ends a call, cancels a command, or clears phone information from the display.
  • Talk Button: Activates the voice command system for HFL.
  • PHONE Button: Directly navigates to the Phone screen.
  • Interface Dial: Allows selection of items on the screen and access to secondary menus.
  • Microphone: Captures voice commands and speech during calls.
  • Volume Up/Down: Adjusts the system volume.

Voice Commands:

To use voice commands, the user presses the Talk button, waits for a beep, and then speaks a command. It's crucial to speak clearly and naturally after the beep. The system recognizes commands listed in the Voice Command Index. For optimal performance, it is recommended to aim the vehicle's vents away from the ceiling and close windows, as external noise can interfere with the microphone and lead to misinterpretation of commands. To change the volume level during a call or voice command interaction, the audio system's volume knob or remote audio controls on the steering wheel should be used.

Phone Pairing:

Before using hands-free phone and streaming audio functions, a mobile phone must be paired with the system. This process can only be performed when the vehicle is stopped to ensure safety.

  • Pairing the First Phone:
    1. From the Settings Menu, press the PHONE button.
    2. Select "Yes" to initiate pairing.
    3. Confirm that the phone is discoverable, then select "Yes" on the system.
    4. The HFL system searches for available phones. The user selects their phone from the displayed list. If the phone doesn't appear, options to refresh the search or search for "HandsFreeLink" from the phone itself are available.
    5. A pairing code is displayed on the HFL system. The user must compare this code with the one appearing on their phone and then connect to HFL from their phone.
    6. A notification confirms successful pairing.
  • Pairing an Additional Phone:
    1. Press the SETTINGS button.
    2. Select "Bluetooth®/Phone Settings."
    3. Navigate to "Bluetooth® Device List" and then "Add Bluetooth® Device."
    4. Ensure the phone is in search or discoverable mode. The HFL system will automatically search for Bluetooth® devices.
    5. Select the desired phone from the list. If it doesn't appear, options to refresh or search for "Bluetooth®" devices from the phone are provided.
    6. A pairing code is displayed. The user confirms the code matches their phone and connects to HFL from their phone.
    7. A notification confirms successful pairing. Note: If there is an active connection to Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™, pairing of additional Bluetooth-compatible devices may be unavailable, and the "Add Bluetooth Device" option may be grayed out.

Making a Call:

Calls can be made using several methods:

  • Dialing a Number:
    1. Press the PHONE button.
    2. Select "Dial."
    3. Use the on-demand Multi-Use Display™ keyboard to input the desired number.
    4. Select the green phone icon to initiate the call.
  • Using the Phonebook: If the phone is paired and "Automatic Phone Sync" is enabled, the entire phonebook can be automatically imported.
    • Using Voice Commands:
      1. Press the Talk button.
      2. Say "Call" followed by the contact name (e.g., "Call John Smith").
      3. Use the interface dial to make and enter selections if needed.
    • Using the Interface:
      1. Press the PHONE button.
      2. Select "Phonebook."
      3. Scroll through the list to find the desired contact and select the number to call.
  • Storing Speed Dial Entries: Up to 20 numbers can be stored for quick dialing.
    1. Press the PHONE button.
    2. Select "Speed Dial."
    3. Choose a source for the number:
      • "Import from Call History": Select from previous calls.
      • "Manual Input": Enter the number manually.
      • "Import from Phonebook": Select from the linked phone's imported phonebook.
    4. After storing, the system may prompt to create a voice tag for the number.
    5. Use the Talk button and follow prompts to store the voice tag.
  • Using Speed Dial:
    1. Press the PHONE button.
    2. Select "Speed Dial."
    3. Select the desired speed dial entry.

Safety Considerations:

To minimize driver distraction, certain manual functions of the HFL system may be inoperable or grayed out while the vehicle is in motion. Voice commands, however, remain available at all times. Applicable laws may prohibit the operation of handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle, reinforcing the importance of using the hands-free system.

Maintenance Features

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features for the BLUETOOTH® HANDSFREELINK® system. However, general maintenance for such integrated electronic systems typically involves:

  • Software Updates: Ensuring the system's software is up-to-date can improve performance, compatibility with newer phones, and address any bugs. These updates are usually performed by authorized service centers.
  • Troubleshooting: If issues arise, such as phones not pairing or voice commands not being recognized, basic troubleshooting steps like re-pairing the phone or checking for interference (e.g., from vents or open windows) are recommended. For more complex issues, professional diagnosis may be required.
  • Compatibility Checks: Users are advised to visit handsfreelink.com to check phone compatibility, ensuring their device works optimally with the system. For Canadian customers, a dedicated phone number (855) 490-7351 is provided for HandsFreeLink® related inquiries.

Overall, the BLUETOOTH® HANDSFREELINK® system is designed to be a user-friendly and safety-conscious feature, integrating seamlessly into the driving experience to facilitate communication.
