Sensored ESC Explained

Overview

This document describes the Alien Power System (APS) ESC, a precision electronic speed controller designed for various applications, including E-bike systems. The manual emphasizes the importance of correct programming and handling to prevent damage to the controller and ensure user safety. APS disclaims responsibility for damage or injury resulting from improper use or modification of the product. The product comes with a 1-year warranty, excluding modified or incorrectly used items.

Function Description:

The APS ESC is a brushless electronic speed controller designed to drive tri-phase brushless motors. It manages motor rotation by sending a sequence of signals, taking into account the motor's rotational position. Unlike sensorless ESCs that rely on back EMF to detect rotor position, the APS Sensored ESC utilizes magnetic or optical sensors to communicate the exact rotor position to the controller. This allows the ESC to precisely send voltage and energize the motor coils at the exact time they are needed, resulting in smoother power delivery, improved low-speed driveability, and higher torque, especially at lower RPMs. This makes it particularly suitable for E-bike systems that require high initial torque.

The ESC supports both Brake ON and Brake OFF modes, and its functionality can be configured via a transmitter, a dedicated Program Box, or PC software using a USB link. The device is not "plug and play" and requires proper programming before use to avoid issues.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Setup: Function values can be set via a Pro-Box or PC using a provided USB link.
  • Two-way Communication: The ESC supports two-way communication when connected to a computer.
  • Firmware Updates: Firmware can be updated by the user.
  • Timing Settings: Adjustable (0°- 30°) to suit different motor types.
  • Throttle Curve: Offers 3 types of throttle curves for customized control.
  • Acceleration Control: Provides 3 types of acceleration control.
  • Motor Rotation: Programmable to suit specific applications.
  • Transmitter-based Setting: Simple function values can be set directly via the transmitter. This involves moving the throttle stick to full power, turning on the transmitter and ESC, and listening for a four-tone melody indicating readiness for programming. Different groups of beeps correspond to various ESC modes, allowing the user to select a mode by moving the throttle stick to the middle position during the corresponding beep sequence.
  • Program Box Setting: For more comprehensive function value settings, the Prog-Box can be used. This involves connecting the ESC to the Prog-Box, turning on the ESC, and navigating through menus to select ESC type, controller type, and desired function items and values. The motor will beep to confirm successful settings.
  • PC Software Setting: The ESC can also be programmed using PC software via a USB link. This requires disconnecting the battery, motor, and receiver from the ESC, connecting the USB link to the PC, launching the APS ESC Computer Link Software, and selecting the correct COM port. The software allows users to change any setting value or load factory default values. After making adjustments, settings are saved to the ESC by pressing the "write" button.
  • Sensored Design: The Sensored ESC provides superior control, especially at low RPMs, by precisely detecting rotor position, leading to smoother power delivery and higher torque. This is particularly beneficial for E-bike systems.
  • Connection Guidance: The manual provides clear instructions for connecting the ESC to the battery, motor, and receiver, including diagrams for both OPTO and BEC versions of the ESC. It also details the pinout for the sensored connection, specifying ground, phase C, phase B, phase A, temperature control, and positive +5V.

Maintenance Features:

  • Firmware Updatability: The ability to update firmware ensures the ESC can be kept current with the latest improvements and features.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual advises users to contact APS for assistance if they encounter any issues, emphasizing a commitment to finding solutions.
  • Precautionary Measures:
    • Users are warned against operating the ESC with only the anti-spark wire, as this can cause permanent damage.
    • It is recommended to use a lower LiPo battery input when programming the ESC for the first time to familiarize oneself with the product and prevent damage.
    • A no-load test is advised to ensure everything works correctly before attempting full power operation.
    • When using the PC software, users are cautioned to ensure the 4 ESC pin colors match the USB pin colors to prevent damage from incorrect connections.
    • When disconnecting the 4-pin wires from the USB cable, it is important to ensure the metal pins do not touch other metal parts or each other, as this can damage the ESC logic board.
    • Incorrect connection of phases and sensor wires (e.g., blue-blue, green-green, yellow-yellow) will damage the controller and invalidate the warranty.
