(2) If the clearance is excessive (larger end
of gauge will pass between the snapring and the back-
plate), new plates may be installed to reduce the clear-
ance. If the clearance is still excessive after new
internal-splined and external-tanged clutch plates are
installed, a thicker backplate is required.
(3) If the clearance is insufficient (small end
of gauge will not enter), a thinner backplate is re-
quired.

(4) Backplates are stamped with identifying
numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (or no mark), or 6). Thicknesses
are as follows:
