Overview

The Amana ASX 18 SEER Condensing Unit is an outdoor HVAC unit designed for residential and light commercial cooling applications, available in 3, 4, and 5-ton capacities. It utilizes R-410A refrigerant and operates on 208/230-volt single-phase power. The unit's primary function is to cool conditioned spaces by pulling air through a condenser coil with a direct-drive propeller fan and discharging the air from the top of the cabinet.

Technical Specifications:

The model numbers covered are ASX180361A*, ASX180481A*, and ASX180601A* (and their 'B' minor revisions).

  • Cooling Capacity (BTUH):

    • ASX180361*: 36,000
    • ASX180481*: 48,000
    • ASX180601*: 60,000
  • Compressor:

    • R.L. Amps: 16.7 (3-ton), 21.2 (4-ton), 25.6 (5-ton)
    • L.R. Amps: 82.0 (3-ton), 96.0 (4-ton), 118.0 (5-ton)
    • Low Pressure Switch: Open at 22 +/- 7 PSIG, Close at 50 +/- 7 PSIG for all models.
    • High Pressure Switch: Open at 610 PSIG, Close at 420 PSIG for all models.
    • The units use Copeland Scroll "Ultratech" Series compressors, specifically designed for R-410A refrigerant. These compressors are more tolerant of small quantities of liquid refrigerant, though continued floodback or flooded start conditions can still cause premature bearing failure. "POE" (polyolester) oil is used and is not compatible with mineral oil-based lubricants.
  • Condenser Fan Motor:

    • Horsepower: 1/3 HP for all models.
    • F.L. Amps: 2.8 A for all models.
  • Refrigerant Lines (O.D.):

    • Liquid Line: 3/8" for all models.
    • Suction Line: 7/8" (3-ton), 1 1/8" (4-ton & 5-ton). Installer will need to supply appropriate adapters for suction line connections.
  • Refrigerant Charge:

    • ASX180361*: 187.0 oz
    • ASX180481*: 262.0 oz
    • ASX180601*: 262.0 oz
    • Units are factory charged for the matching evaporator coil and a 15-foot refrigerant line set. System charge must be adjusted per the Installation Instructions Final Charge Procedure.
  • Power Supply: 208/230-60-1 for all models.

    • Minimum Circuit Ampacity: 23.7 (3-ton), 29.3 (4-ton), 34.8 (5-ton). Wire size should be determined in accordance with National Electrical Codes.
    • Maximum Overcurrent Device: 40 (3-ton), 50 (4-ton), 60 (5-ton). MUST use Time Delay Fuse or HACR type Circuit Breaker.
  • Electrical Conduit Size: 1/2 or 3/4 inches for all models.

  • Approximate Shipping Weight: 270 lbs (3-ton), 320 lbs (4-ton), 330 lbs (5-ton).

  • Dimensions (W x D x H): 35½ x 35½ x 38¼ inches for all models.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Installation Only: The unit is designed exclusively for outdoor installation.
  • Clearances: Minimum airflow clearances are specified to prevent air recirculation.
    • Residential: 10" (A), 10" (B), 18" (C), 20" (AA).
    • Light Commercial: 12" (A), 12" (B), 18" (C), 24" (AA).
    • If installing two or more units, allow at least 24 inches between units. If one side is restricted (e.g., against a house wall), the unit can be placed as close as 8" to that wall.
  • Location Restrictions: Do not locate directly under a gas appliance vent, within 3 feet of a clothes dryer vent, where refreezing defrost water could create a hazard, or where water may rise into the unit.
  • TXV Kit Requirement: Installation of these units requires a specified TXV Kit to be installed on the indoor coil. The TXV is determined by the outdoor unit, not the indoor coil.
  • Performance Data: Detailed expanded performance data is provided for various outdoor ambient temperatures (65°F, 75°F, 85°F, 95°F, 105°F, 115°F) and entering indoor wet bulb temperatures (59°F, 63°F, 67°F, 71°F) across different airflow rates (e.g., 1520, 1350, 1180 for 5-ton low stage). This data includes Total BTUH, Sensible BTUH, S/T (Sensible to Total ratio), Delta T, KW, AMPS, HI PR, and LO PR for both low and high stage operations.
  • Performance Test Guidelines: A properly operating unit should be within specific tolerances for subcooling, Delta T, HI PR, LO PR, and Amps as listed in the Air Conditioning Specifications and Performance Data Sheets.

Maintenance Features:

  • Service Manual Reference: Refer to Service Manual RS6200006 for detailed installation, operation, and troubleshooting information.
  • Safety Information: All safety information, particularly regarding high voltage and refrigerant handling, must be followed as provided in the Service Manual.
  • Parts Catalog Reference: Refer to the appropriate Parts Catalog for part number information.
  • Qualified Technicians: This manual is for qualified, professionally trained HVAC technicians only. Goodman does not assume responsibility for property damage or personal injury due to improper service procedures by unqualified persons. Installation and repair should be performed ONLY by individuals meeting "entry level technician" requirements as specified by AHRI.
  • Refrigerant Handling: Practice safe handling of refrigerants to avoid injury, explosion, or death. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has regulations regarding refrigerant introduction and disposal; failure to follow these can harm the environment and lead to substantial fines.
  • Electrical Safety: Disconnect ALL power before servicing or installing the unit. Multiple power sources may be present. Failure to do so may cause property damage, personal injury, or death. Use copper wire only for electrical connections.
  • Non-Approved Devices: Do not connect or use any device not design-certified by Goodman for use with this unit, as this can result in serious property damage, personal injury, reduced unit performance, and/or hazardous conditions.
  • Combustible Materials: Do not store combustible materials or use gasoline or other flammable liquids or vapors near the appliance.
  • Wiring Diagrams: Wiring is subject to change. Always refer to the wiring diagram on the unit for the most up-to-date wiring and electrical information. The diagrams include details for component codes (Contactor, Crankcase Heater, Outdoor Fan Motor, Compressor, Compressor Solenoid, High Pressure Switch, Internal Overload, Low Pressure Switch, Outdoor Air Sensor, Run Capacitor, Start Capacitor, Start Relay) and wiring codes (Factory Wiring - High Voltage, Low Voltage, Optional High Voltage; Field Wiring - High Voltage, Low Voltage). It also shows connections for legacy and communicating indoor thermostats.
