Do you have a question about the APART CHAMP-3D and is the answer not in the manual?
The APart CHAMP-3D is an audiophile digital power amplifier designed for fixed installations, offering a high-power 2.1 amplifier configuration with three Hypex™ audiophile Class-D digital amplifier modules. It features high-end operational amplifiers in the analog signal path, ensuring a classic analog amplifier sound with the benefits of Class-D efficiency. The amplifier boasts high thermal efficiency (typically 92%) and an exceptionally high damping factor for tight bass response.
The CHAMP-3D serves as a versatile modular amplifier suitable for both background music systems and medium-power applications. It integrates an Analog Devices® digital signal processor (DSP) with 24-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADC), providing extensive audio processing capabilities. These include a 4-band fully parametric equalizer, a crossover with freely selectable frequencies and Linkwitz-Riley or Butterworth filter characteristics, delay, compressor, and clip limiter. The unit operates under µC control and incorporates an intelligent auto loudness system.
The CHAMP-3D offers comprehensive connectivity and control options. It features balanced XLR female and male input connectors, as well as euroblock inputs with pass-through capability, allowing for daisy-chaining multiple amplifiers. All channels are equipped with 4-pole Speakon® output connectors. An external volume control can be connected via a 2-pole euroblock, supporting a standard 10 kΩ linear potentiometer for master volume adjustment in 2 dB steps. This external control disables the front panel master volume and serial port volume control when active.
Front panel controls include individual channel mute/select buttons for sub, left, and right channels, which also serve for parameter editing. A dot matrix LCD display with blue background light shows the master level and provides menu guidance with arrow symbols next to three push buttons for parameter editing. A rotary encoder allows for master volume control and parameter value adjustment within the menu.
The menu structure is user-friendly, offering access to various settings:
RS232 control offers extensive remote management capabilities, including programming user string text for the display, enabling/disabling ECHO, Line Feed (LF), Backspace (BS), and value feedback (VALFB). It also allows for firmware updates. The unit features a ground lift switch to help resolve ground loops.
The CHAMP-3D is designed for reliability with extended speaker and amplifier protection circuits, including DC protection, over-current protection, and over-temperature protection. A real-time mains voltage monitoring system disables amplifiers and the main power supply if the mains voltage is out of range. Similarly, a real-time power supply monitoring system disables amplifiers if the internal DC supply is out of range.
The amplifier relies on convectional cooling, with an oversized design that eliminates the need for noisy cooling fans. Proper ventilation is crucial; the unit should not have its front, rear, top, or bottom ventilation openings blocked. At least one free rack space (44 mm) above and beneath the amplifier is recommended if rack-mounted. The ambient temperature should remain between 0 and 40°C.
The mains fuse is located inside the unit and is accessible only by authorized personnel. In case of a blown fuse, it should be replaced with a 6.3 AT/250V fuse. The unit provides warning and error messages on the LCD display for various issues such as amplifier shut down (over-temperature, supply voltage error, short circuit), DC offset errors, invalid external volume control, and input overload. In case of an error, it is advised to power off the unit, disconnect all inputs and outputs, and then power on again to diagnose the issue.
Firmware updates are possible via the RS232 port, with the latest firmware available on the manufacturer's website. A firmware updater program is also provided. The unit can be restored to factory default settings via an RS232 command ("SET RESTORE ON"), which will overwrite user-defined settings and restart the unit with the master level at -∞. The standard password for unlocking the unit is "1 2 3 4".
