distortion
in figure 6.36 becomes
apparent
as
the
image is pulled l
arger
. This
is
because
each
dot
in the original
is
expanded
to spread
the
image.
There
are
no
smoothing
mark
s
inserted
to
make
the image
appear
more
continuou
s.
This
distortion
becomes worse when stretching occurs
in
only
one
direction. It may become
unacceptably
great when
expanding
intricate patterns.
Alternately, shrinking
may
cause
an
image's fine details to
disappear.
The
artist
may,
in
some cases, be able
to
draw
compensatory
markings
to
reduce this
distortion
,
or
he
or
she
may
decide simply
to
redraw
the
original
on
a larger
or
smaller
scale.
