connect
modem
.
The
unit
contains
its
own
microprocessor
so
that
it
can
operate
the
telephone
line
according
to
the
instruc-
tions received
from
the
computer.
Since the
modem
does
not
rely
upon
the
op
e
rator
to
lift
the
phone
when
making
or
receiving a call,
the
modem
can
perform
these
actions
itself
electronically.
Direct
connect
modems
solve
many
of
the problems
encountered
with acoustic
modems
.
They
are
not
as suscepti-
ble
to
interference as their predecessors.
They
can
operate
the
telephone
without
assistance.
This
means
that
the
modem
can
be
operated
remotely with
no
operator
present as
long
as
the
modem
is
left
on
and
the
computer
is set
up
in
advance
.
The
direct
connect
modem
can
remain
permanently
connected to
the
phone
line.
This
eliminates the need to dedicate
another
telephon
e for
the
modem's use.

require a physically
compatible
telephone receive
