How to reinitialize my ARCHOS 101b Oxygen ?
This process is recommended for your device if : it is frozen, it doesn’t
turn on or you are experiencing a software issue. It will allow you to
perform a low level format on your device. Thus all the data will be
deleted, you won't be able to retrieve them. We strongly recommend to
back them up first. Keep in mind that your device’s battery must be
charged enough to perform this operation.
Since Android™ 5.0, your device is linked to your Google™ account. If you
reset your device from the recovery menu (method 2), you will have to set
the same Google™ account you filled in the last wizard. If you reset your
device in order to resell it, please use the method 1.
1. If you can have access to the Android™ interface
a. Select the Settings app then select Backup & reset > Factory data
reset
b. Select "Reset tablet" and confirm
2. If you can’t access the Android™ interface
a. The tablet must be off (push the reset button if available or the
power button for 10 secs).
b. Press & hold Volume + then ON/OFF to turn on the device

How to Reinitialize ARCHOS 101 b Oxygen

Factory Reset via Android Interface

Perform a factory data reset through the Android settings menu if the device is accessible.

Factory Reset via Recovery Mode

Reinitialize the device using hardware buttons to access Recovery mode when the Android interface is inaccessible.

Overview

This document outlines the process for reinitializing an ARCHOS 101b Oxygen device, a procedure recommended when the device is frozen, won't turn on, or is experiencing software issues. Reinitialization performs a low-level format, which will delete all data on the device, making it unrecoverable. Therefore, backing up data beforehand is strongly advised. It is also crucial that the device's battery is sufficiently charged to complete this operation.

The reinitialization process is divided into two main methods, depending on whether the user can access the Android™ interface.

Method 1: If you can access the Android™ interface

This method is straightforward and involves navigating through the device's settings.

  1. Access Settings: Begin by selecting the "Settings" application on your device.
  2. Navigate to Backup & reset: Within the Settings menu, locate and select "Backup & reset."
  3. Initiate Factory data reset: Choose "Factory data reset" from the available options.
  4. Confirm Reset: Finally, select "Reset tablet" and confirm your choice to proceed with the reinitialization.

This method is generally preferred if the device is still somewhat functional and allows navigation through its menus. It is also the recommended method if you intend to resell your device, as it ensures a clean slate without linking to a Google™ account after the reset.

Method 2: If you can't access the Android™ interface

This method is used when the device is unresponsive or unable to boot into the Android™ operating system. It involves a hardware-based approach to access the recovery menu.

  1. Power Off the Tablet: Ensure the tablet is completely powered off. If it's unresponsive, you may need to push the reset button (if available) or hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown.

  2. Enter Boot Selection Menu:

    • Press and hold the "Volume +" button.
    • While holding "Volume +", press the "ON/OFF" button to turn on the device.
    • Continue holding both buttons until the boot selection menu appears.
  3. Navigate to Recovery Mode:

    • In the boot selection menu, use the "Volume +" button to scroll down through the options.
    • Select "Recovery mode."
    • Confirm your selection by pressing the "Volume -" button.

Note: For navigation within the recovery menu, the volume buttons are typically used to scroll, and the ON/OFF button is used to validate selections. However, the instructions here specify using Volume + to scroll and Volume - to confirm for entering recovery mode, and then later state "Use volume buttons to navigate and validate with ON/OFF button" for the recovery menu itself. This slight discrepancy should be noted, with the latter instruction likely applying once inside the recovery menu.

Inside the Recovery Menu (after Method 2)

Once you have successfully entered the recovery menu, follow these steps to complete the reinitialization:

  1. Select "Wipe data/factory reset": Use the volume buttons to navigate to this option and press the ON/OFF button to validate. This action will restore your device to its default settings.
  2. Confirm Data Deletion: Select "Yes -- delete all user data" and validate with the ON/OFF button. This step ensures all user data is removed.
  3. Reboot System: Finally, select "Reboot system now" and validate with the ON/OFF button to restart your device.

Important Considerations for Method 2:

  • Google™ Account Linkage: Since Android™ 5.0, your device is linked to your Google™ account. If you reset your device using the recovery menu (Method 2), you will be required to set up the same Google™ account that was previously used during the device's initial setup wizard. This is a security feature to prevent unauthorized access. If you intend to resell the device, Method 1 is preferred to avoid this Google™ account linkage issue for the new owner.
  • Failed Access to Recovery: If you encounter difficulties accessing the recovery menu, the document advises starting the process again from the beginning.

Post-Reinitialization:

After successfully completing either method, your device will have been reinitialized. To download and install the original content for your tablet, you may need to refer to a separate FAQ document, as indicated in the instructions.

Maintenance Features:

The reinitialization process itself serves as a significant maintenance feature, addressing critical software issues such as:

  • Frozen Device: Resolves instances where the device becomes unresponsive.
  • Failure to Turn On: Can fix boot-up problems not related to hardware damage.
  • Software Issues: Corrects various software glitches, errors, and performance degradation by restoring the system to a factory state.

By performing a low-level format, the device's internal storage is thoroughly wiped, removing corrupted files, residual data, and potential software conflicts that could be causing problems. This ensures a fresh start for the operating system, often improving performance and stability.

The emphasis on backing up data highlights the destructive nature of this maintenance operation, underscoring the importance of user responsibility in data management. The requirement for a sufficiently charged battery is a practical maintenance consideration, preventing the device from powering off unexpectedly during a critical system operation, which could lead to further complications or even bricking the device.

In summary, this guide provides comprehensive instructions for a crucial maintenance procedure that can revive a problematic ARCHOS 101b Oxygen device, ensuring its continued usability by restoring it to a clean, factory-default state.
