Why is the Armstrong Water Heater producing extremely hot water?
    • S
      scottnormanAug 11, 2025
If the Armstrong Water Heater is producing extremely hot water, it might be due to several reasons. The steam pressure could be too high, so decrease the steam pressure to between 2 and 15 psig. Another cause might be that recirculated water is continually diverting through the Flo-Rite-Temp; in this case, check the diverting valve for a stuck or failed thermal capsule. Also, the steam could be superheated, so ensure it is piped to saturated steam. Lastly, the mixing valve might not be properly adjusted; adjust the unit according to the instructions.

Why is my Armstrong FLO-RITE-TEMP 415 Water Heater only producing warm water?
    • J
      Jim MorganAug 17, 2025
If your Armstrong Water Heater is only producing warm water, it could be due to several reasons. The steam pressure may be too low, so increase the steam pressure to between 2 and 15 psig. Air might have accumulated in the shell of the heat exchanger; install a thermostatic air vent on the shell. It's also possible that the flow is above the rated capacity of the unit, so make sure the unit is sized properly. Scale on the tubes in the heat exchanger can also cause this; refer to the Clean-In-Place operating instructions or remove the tube bundle and clean it. Finally, the mixing valve may not be properly adjusted; adjust the unit according to the instructions.

What to do if the Armstrong FLO-RITE-TEMP 415 hammers and bangs during operation?
    • B
      Brendan GriffinAug 23, 2025
If your Armstrong Water Heater is hammering and banging during operation, it could be due to a few reasons. The shell of the heat exchanger might not be properly drained, so ensure the steam trap is working and properly installed, the shell is level to the floor, and do not elevate condensate if the pressure is low. The steam pressure might have dropped or a vacuum has formed; increase the pressure and install a vacuum breaker at the shell drain. It's also possible that the water pressure has dropped below that of the steam pressure, causing steam to form inside the water tubes; install a pressure switch on the water inlet to shut off steam on a drop in water pressure.

How to fix an Armstrong Water Heater that only produces cold water?
    • J
      John ChungAug 29, 2025
If only cold water is coming out of your Armstrong Water Heater, several factors could be responsible. First, the steam might not be turned on to the unit, so open the steam valve. Second, the water tubes in the heat exchanger could be plugged; refer to the Clean-In-Place operating instructions or remove the tube bundle and clean it. Third, the differential pressure sensing diaphragm may have ruptured, requiring you to replace the diaphragm. Lastly, the mixing valve may not be properly adjusted; adjust the unit according to the instructions.

    • S
      Stephen VelezSep 4, 2025
If no water is coming out of the Armstrong Water Heater, the inlet valve on the water supply may be closed; open the valve. Alternatively, there may be no demand for hot water; wait until demand is present and then re-check.
