Overview

The AT&T Wireless Genie Mini with Genie 2 R is a compact device designed to extend your DIRECTV service to additional televisions wirelessly. It functions as a client receiver, connecting to a central Genie 2 server (not included) to access live TV, recorded content, and other DIRECTV services without the need for coaxial cable connections to each TV. This wireless capability offers flexibility in TV placement and reduces cable clutter.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Wireless Genie Mini is to act as a satellite receiver client, streaming content from your Genie 2 server to a connected television. It allows you to watch DIRECTV programming, including live channels and recordings stored on the Genie 2, in any room with a TV, as long as it's within range of the Genie 2's wireless video bridge. This eliminates the need for a separate DVR or receiver at each TV, centralizing your DIRECTV experience. The device supports high-definition video output, ensuring a quality viewing experience. It integrates seamlessly with the DIRECTV system, allowing for a consistent user interface and access to all your subscribed channels and features.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific technical specifications like processor speed, RAM, or internal storage are not detailed in the provided manual, the device's functionality implies certain capabilities. It supports wireless communication with the Genie 2 server, likely utilizing a dedicated wireless video bridge for robust signal transmission. The manual shows connections for a 10-pin single end cable (connecting to the receiver) and colored cable ends (connecting to the TV), indicating support for component video output, in addition to an HDMI port for digital video and audio. The power input is standard, requiring a power cord to an outlet. The compact size of the unit is a key feature, designed for discreet placement, often stacked on top of a non-working receiver during replacement. The device features a POWER button for manual power-up if it doesn't automatically turn on. An LED indicator (GREEN and potentially flashing red) provides status feedback during setup and operation.

Usage Features:

The Wireless Genie Mini is designed for ease of use, particularly during initial setup and replacement.

  • Simple Connection: The setup process involves transferring connections one at a time from a non-working receiver to the replacement Genie Mini, with the exception of the power cord. An HDMI port is available for modern TV connections, and component video output is also supported.
  • Wireless Connectivity: It connects wirelessly to the Genie 2 server's video bridge, eliminating the need for extensive cabling. This allows for flexible placement of TVs in various rooms.
  • Guided Setup: The device features a guided setup process displayed on your TV screen, which walks you through connecting to the video bridge, selecting signal quality, and either adding a new location or replacing an existing one.
  • Remote Control Integration: The device works in conjunction with a DIRECTV remote control. The manual provides instructions for resetting the remote (pressing MUTE and SELECT, then 9-8-7) to ensure proper functionality with the new Genie Mini.
  • Client Management: During setup, users can choose to "REPLACE A LOCATION," allowing them to easily swap out an old client with the new Genie Mini while maintaining existing settings and recordings associated with that location on the Genie 2 server.
  • Status Indicators: LED lights on the device (flashing GREEN during client addition, potentially flashing red during setup) and on the remote (blinking GREEN) provide visual feedback on the device's status and successful command execution.
  • Troubleshooting Assistance: The manual directs users to att.com/equipmentinstall for online instructions and troubleshooting, and provides a customer care number (800.531.5000) for assistance with signal quality issues or other problems.

Maintenance Features:

The manual primarily focuses on the initial setup and return process rather than ongoing maintenance. However, some aspects can be inferred:

  • Self-Contained Unit: The Wireless Genie Mini is a sealed unit with no user-serviceable parts beyond external connections.
  • Firmware Updates: Like most modern electronic devices, it is likely to receive automatic firmware updates from DIRECTV to improve performance, add features, and address security vulnerabilities.
  • Return Process: The manual emphasizes a clear return process for non-working equipment to avoid non-return fees. This includes options for dropping off equipment at FedEx Office or The UPS Store, where it will be scanned, packed, and labeled for return to AT&T, or self-packing and shipping using a provided label. This process ensures proper disposal or refurbishment of old equipment.
  • Access Card Handling: Users are instructed to return the access card with the receiver if it was removed, indicating that the card is an integral part of the device's security and service authorization.
  • Exclusion of Accessories: When returning equipment, users are explicitly told not to include the remote control, cables, accessories, or personal equipment like DVD players, simplifying the return process and allowing users to retain reusable components.
  • Tracking Returns: The manual provides information on how returns are tracked, noting that drop-offs at FedEx/UPS stores are immediately noted, while self-packed returns may take up to 2 weeks to be reflected on the account. This transparency helps users monitor their compliance with return policies.

In summary, the AT&T Wireless Genie Mini with Genie 2 R is a user-friendly, wireless client receiver designed to expand DIRECTV service throughout the home with minimal cabling, offering a streamlined setup and integration with the Genie 2 ecosystem.
