variety

TVs
which
might
be
connected
to
the
computer.
It
is
possible to
regain
the
two
columns
and
allow
a
full
40
column
display
by
altering
the
contents
of
one
of
the
two
memory
locations
that
the
XL
uses
to
control
the
width
of
the
display.
Location
82
sets
the
position
of
the
left
hand
margin,
and
location
83
the
right
hand
margin.
When
the
XL
is
switched
on, a
value
of
2
is
placed
in
location
82,
setting
the
lefthand
edge
of
the
display
at
column
2, so to
regain
the
two
(lost'
columns,
simply:
POKE
82,0
You
will
then
have
access to
all
40
columns
until
you
switch
off
the
computer
or
press
RESET.
DIFFERENT
DISPLAYS
As
we
have
said,
the
XL is
capable
of
a
variety
of
display
types,
and
the
different
displays
are
referred
to
by
a
number
-
the
MODE
number.
The
40
by
25
display
is
known
as
mode
0,
and
is
the
default
mode
which
is
selected
when
you
switch
on
the
XL.
There
is
a
BASIC
command
which
is
used
to
change
modes
-
GRAPHICS.
The
syntax
of
the
GRAPHICS
command
is:
GRAPHICS M
where
M
is
the
number
of
the
mode
required.
So
typing:
GRAPHICS 0
would
select
the
standard
display
-
but
there
isn't
much
point
in
doing
that
since
that's
the
mode
we
are
using!
