Overview

This document describes the ATD-6900 9 Pc. HVLP Spray Gun Set, an owner's manual providing instructions for operation, adjustment, and maintenance of the spray guns and associated components. The set includes three HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray guns with different nozzle sizes, a spray gun filter, a tool cleaning kit, and a regulator.

Function Description:

The ATD-6900 set is designed for applying paint and other coatings using compressed air. HVLP technology ensures efficient material transfer with less overspray, making it suitable for various painting applications. The set provides different gun sizes to accommodate a range of tasks, from fine detail work to broader coverage.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Air Pressure: The tools operate best on a clean, dry supply of compressed air delivered at 29 to 50 psi. All air pressure in the system should be rated within this range. Higher or lower pressure can adversely affect operation or damage the tool.
  • Nozzle Pressure: To maintain 10 psi at the nozzle, a minimum of 29 psi at the inlet is required.
  • Spray Gun Models:
    • ATD-6901: 1.4mm Gun (suitable for general purpose and medium viscosity materials)
    • ATD-6902: 1.8mm Gun (suitable for heavier coatings and primers)
    • ATD-6903: 1.0mm Gun (suitable for fine detail work and light viscosity materials)
  • Included Components:
    • ATD-7812: Spray Gun Filter (recommended for moisture trapping)
    • PRT6900-TK: Tool Cleaning Kit (includes spanner wrench, hex wrench, brush, and filters)
    • ATD-6926: Regulator (for adjusting air pressure)
  • Tip Kits (Needle, Fluid Nozzle, Air Cap):
    • PRT6900-1.4 (for 1.4mm gun)
    • PRT6900-1.8 (for 1.8mm gun)
    • PRT6900-1.0 (for 1.0mm gun)
  • Repair Kit: PRT6900-RK (includes all seals and springs for the 1.4mm and 1.8mm guns) and PRT6900-RK1.0 (for the 1.0mm gun).

Usage Features:

  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always wear eye protection, gloves, and a respirator to prevent exposure to harmful vapors.
    • Never use oxygen or other combustible gases as a propellant; this can cause explosions and serious injury.
    • Use the spray gun only in well-ventilated areas and avoid smoking or using near open flames due to the flammability of many paints and solvents.
    • Disconnect the paint gun from the air supply when not in use or during maintenance. A valve near the gun is recommended for emergency stopping.
    • Inspect the tool before each use for leaks or misaligned parts, and ensure the trigger moves freely.
    • Do not use halogenated hydrocarbon solvents, as they can react chemically with aluminum and zinc parts of the tool.
    • Do not modify the tool.
  • Tool Preparation:
    • Check for worn or damaged parts and replace as necessary.
    • Ensure the trigger moves freely.
    • Connect the tool to an air supply.
    • Adjust air pressure based on paint viscosity and manufacturer's recommendations using the regulator. The regulator features a lock knob: pull to unlock, turn to set desired pressure, push to lock.
    • Clean paint guns before first use to remove any factory oils or pigments. Do not use halogen hydrocarbon or acidic solvents for cleaning.
    • Pour paint into the cup.
  • Gun Handling (for best results):
    • Keep the spray gun perpendicular to the surface; spraying in an arc will result in uneven coating (light coating at edges, heavy in the middle).
    • Keep the gun moving from side to side while spraying. Stopping movement during spraying will cause paint buildup and runs.
    • Begin horizontal movement of the gun before starting to spray and maintain a constant distance of 6-12 inches from the surface.
    • The spraying technique involves a "Start Pull Stroke Trigger" (begin moving, then pull trigger) and "Release End Trigger Stroke" (release trigger, then stop moving).
  • Adjustment:
    • The gun features three main controls for fine-tuning:
      • Fluid (paint) Adjustment Knob: Controls the output volume of paint.
      • Spray Pattern Adjustment Knob: Adjusts the shape and width of the spray pattern.
      • Air Adjustment Knob: Controls the air pressure at the gun, influencing atomization.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Pour any leftover paint back into its container.
    • Clean the paint cup and cap with thinner.
    • Spray thinner through the gun until it comes out clean to clean the spray head, needle, and nozzle.
    • Clean all paint passages thoroughly, as dried paint can clog the spray head.
    • Wipe the exterior of the gun with the included cleaning brush and a soft cloth moistened with thinner.
    • If removing the needle, also remove the nozzle to protect its seat.
    • Crucially, NEVER DIG WITH A WIRE OR HARD OBJECT, as this can damage the needle seat.
    • Remove all paint before it has a chance to dry.
  • Parts Availability: Parts are available as sets only for certain components (e.g., tip kits).
  • Warning: The product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Users are advised to wash hands after handling.
