Do you have a question about the Atlantic Ultraviolet Bio-Logic BIO 1.5 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Bio-Logic® Germicidal Ultraviolet Water Purifier is a device designed to purify water using ultraviolet (UV) light. It is available in two models, BIO 1.5 and BIO 3.0, and is intended for indoor use only. The purifier utilizes germicidal ultraviolet rays to inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms in water, providing a chemical-free method of water purification.

Function Description:

The Bio-Logic® purifier operates by exposing water to germicidal UV light as it flows through a stainless steel chamber. The UV light, specifically at a wavelength of 254 nm, disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce and effectively sterilizing the water. The system is designed for point-of-use (POU) applications, meaning it should be installed as close as possible to the point where purified water is needed to minimize the chance of re-contamination.

The purification process involves water entering the chamber and flowing past a quartz sleeve, which encases the germicidal UV lamp. The UV intensity and exposure time are critical for effective purification. The system is designed to provide adequate germicidal dosage throughout the disinfection chamber.

The system requires specific power requirements: 120V 50/60Hz (ballast no. 10-0518A) or 230V 50/60Hz (ballast no. 10-0514A). It is crucial that the electrical power supplied matches these requirements. A voltage surge protector is recommended.

Water quality is a critical factor for the effective operation of the UV purifier. The maximum concentration levels for various parameters are specified:

  • Turbidity: < 1 NTU
  • Manganese: < 0.05 mg/l
  • Total Suspended Solids: < 10 mg/l
  • pH: 6.5 - 9.5
  • Color: None
  • Hardness: < 6 GPG or 102.6 PPM
  • Iron: < 0.3 mg/l
  • Tannins: < 0.1 ppm (0.1 mg/l)
  • UV Transmission: >85% per cm* *Contact factory for recommendations on applications where UV transmission is < 85%.

Usage Features:

The Bio-Logic® purifier is designed for horizontal mounting and should be located in a dry, well-lit area with adequate clearance for maintenance. It must be protected from elements and temperatures below freezing (ambient temperature between 35°F and 100°F).

Installation requires connecting the purifier to a grounded Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) receptacle. Metal piping is recommended for connections to the inlet and outlet for at least 12 inches past the first elbow to avoid UV degradation of plastic pipes.

Optional accessories are available to enhance the system's functionality:

  • SENTRY® Safety Sensor: Provides visual monitoring of normal operation and an audible alarm for lamp failure.
  • Promate™ Time Delay Mechanism: A 2-minute warm-up period for the UV lamp, ensuring full germicidal output before water flow.
  • Promate™ Solenoid Valve: Works with the Time Delay Mechanism to control water flow, preventing unpurified water from passing through during the warm-up period or lamp failure.
  • Promate™ Elapsed Time Indicator: Monitors the operating hours of the UV lamp, indicating when replacement is due.
  • Promate™ Safety Glasses: General-purpose safety protection for UV radiation.
  • Promate™ Face Shield: Lightweight visor for additional head and face protection from UV rays.
  • SureFLO™ Flow Control Valve: Limits water flow to the rated capacity of the purifier.
  • Promate™ Audio Alarm: An audible alarm for any malfunction.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is essential for optimal performance and includes:

  • Lamp Replacement: Germicidal lamps have a recommended service life of 10,000 hours (approximately 12 months of continuous service). Lamp replacement involves disconnecting power, removing the end-cap, socket, and old lamp, then installing the new lamp. Safety glasses and a face shield are required during this process.
  • Quartz Sleeve Cleaning or Replacement: The quartz sleeve should be inspected and cleaned periodically (every one to three months) to remove any deposits that could reduce UV transmission. If heavily fouled or broken, it must be replaced. Cleaning involves removing the sleeve and gently wiping it with a mild, non-abrasive detergent or a dilute hydrochloric acid solution. Protective gloves are recommended.
  • Inspection: Regular inspection of the purifier ensures the germicidal lamp is operating correctly. An LED indicator light on the ballast provides visual indication of germicidal lamp operation. Ballasts also have a built-in audio alarm for lamp failure.
  • Grounding: Ensure all grounding wires are securely attached to the chamber and that the purifier is plugged into a GFCI receptacle.
  • Disposal: Mercury-added lamps must be disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, not in regular trash.

The manual emphasizes safety precautions, including always disconnecting power before servicing, avoiding direct or reflected UV exposure, and wearing appropriate protective gear (eyewear, face shield, gloves). It also advises against operating the purifier if any components are damaged or if there is no proper electrical ground.
