The MIGHTY PURE® Germicidal Ultraviolet Water Purifier, available in models MP16A, MP22A, MP36C, and MP49C, is designed for the disinfection of water by exposing it to germicidal ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This process effectively inactivates suspended microorganisms without requiring additional contact time after treatment. The purifier is intended for indoor use with visually clear, non-colored, non-cloudy, and non-turbid water, and is not suitable for treating water with obvious contamination or raw sewage.
Function Description:
The MIGHTY PURE® water purifier operates by directing water into an annular space between a quartz sleeve and the chamber wall. Within this space, water is exposed to UV rays emitted by a germicidal lamp. The disinfection dosage is a function of both the exposure time (determined by flow rate) and the intensity of the UV radiation. A translucent sight port, or an optional germicidal ultraviolet monitor, provides visual confirmation of lamp operation. The purified water is immediately ready for use upon exiting the chamber.
Important Technical Specifications:
The MIGHTY PURE® purifiers are designed for horizontal mounting and constructed with a passivated and electropolished type 316 Stainless Steel chamber and chamber head, and a ballast housing made of type 304 Stainless Steel and Aluminum Alloy. They feature a drain port on the chamber for easy draining.

Usage Features:
The purifier features EASY-OFF™ End Caps for quick and easy lamp changes without disconnecting from the water supply or draining the purifier, requiring no tools. However, electrical power must always be disconnected before changing the lamp.
Recommended installation practices include:
- Mounting horizontally in a dry, well-lit area, protected from elements and freezing temperatures (ambient temperature 35-100°F).
- Maintaining a minimum clearance of one chamber length from one end and 6" from the opposite end for maintenance.
- Locating the purifier closest to the point of use to minimize re-contamination.
- Installing a suitable drain pan underneath the purifier, plumbed to an adequate, free-flowing drain, to prevent water damage from leaks or condensation.
- Installing a 5-micron sediment filter or finer upstream of the purifier to prevent particulates from coating the quartz sleeve.
- Installing shut-off valves on both inlet and outlet sides for isolation during maintenance.
- Using unions on both inlet and outlet for easy removal from plumbing.
- Connecting to cold water lines only (inlet water temperature not exceeding 100°F).
- Plugging into an approved Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) receptacle.
- Disinfecting downstream plumbing with a chlorine solution (100-ppm suggested) after installation.
Maintenance Features:
Routine maintenance is crucial for optimal performance:
- Lamp Replacement: Recommended every 10,000 hours of operation (approximately 12 months of continuous service). Lamps contain mercury and must be disposed of properly according to local, state, and federal laws (LampRecycle.org).
- Quartz Sleeve Cleaning: Recommended after one month of initial use, with frequency adjusted based on inspection. Deposits on the quartz sleeve, often caused by calcium, iron, or manganese, reduce UV transmission. Cleaning can be done with alcohol, a mild non-abrasive detergent, or dilute hydrochloric acid for stubborn stains.
- Inspection: Regularly check for lamp operation (via sight port or optional UV monitor) and ensure the GFCI receptacle is operational.
- Biological Testing: Perform quarterly for the first year and annually thereafter, or at minimum, at installation and lamp replacement. Additional testing is needed after any modifications to the plumbing system or water source.
- Optional GUARDIAN™ Germicidal Ultraviolet Monitor: This monitor visually indicates the UV energy level and can detect reductions due to fouling, poor UV transmission, lamp outage, or lamp depreciation. It can operate optional Promate™ Audio Alarms and/or solenoid valves. If the quartz rod of the sensor probe becomes fouled, it can be cleaned with alcohol, mild detergent, or dilute hydrochloric acid.
Safety Precautions:
- Always disconnect power before performing any service or maintenance to prevent severe or fatal electrical shock.
- Avoid exposure to direct or reflected germicidal UV rays, as they are harmful to eyes and skin. Approved germicidal UV blocking eyewear and face shields are recommended.
- Wear protective gloves when handling components.
- Broken quartz is sharp; protective glasses and gloves are recommended when handling.
- Do not operate the water purifier if the lamp cable, lamp connection, power cord, plug, or any other part is damaged.
- Do not use hand tools to tighten static gland nuts, as this can break the quartz sleeve.
- Ensure proper grounding for all DC ballasts and UV units to prevent serious injury or death.
Optional Accessories:
A range of optional accessories enhances the purifier's functionality and safety:
- GUARDIAN™ Germicidal Ultraviolet Monitor (Analog/Digital): Monitors UV intensity and can activate alarms or solenoid valves.
- GUARDIAN™ ASSIST Germicidal Ultraviolet Monitor Extension: Remotely indicates UV intensity.
