General
All compressed air contains a certain amount of
moisture in the form of water vapour. The volume
of water vapour that air may contain however
is limited; and if the moisture content is greater
than this limit the excess moisture precipitates
as condensation. The maximum amount of
water vapour that air may contain drops at
lower temperatures and at increasing pressure
respectively, calculated per volume unit of free air.
When air is compressed – even if the atmospheric
air is comparatively dry – water will precipitate from
the compressed air according to the increase in
pressure.
Compressed air at the outlet of a compressor
is extremely warm and may therefore contain a
relatively high content of water vapour; however,
when the air starts to flow through the air network
the temperature will continue to drop the further
away from the compressor the air travels. This
results in a further increase in the amount of
condensate (free water) precipitated.
Water in compressed air can in certain circumstances
cause breakdowns, icing at a compressed air
machine’s exhaust outlet or an increase in wear
through unsatisfactory or inadequate lubrication.
Consequently a water separator is recommended
even if the atmospheric air is relatively dry.
A mechanical water separator, such as VAM 5A
for example, only separates free water and should
therefore be placed where the compressed air is
as cold as possible, in other words as far away
from compressors as practicably possible but
where the temperature is slightly above 0°C.
The Atlas Copco water separator VAM 5A has
been designed to be used in conjunction with
compressed air machines with a maximum air flow
of 120 l/s.
