Groove
means t he space between two adjacent tread
ribs.
Load rating (code)
means t he maximum load that a tire is rated
to carry for a given inflat ion pressu re. You
may not find this informat ion on all t ires be-
cause it is not required by law.
Maximum load rating
means the load rating for a t ire at the maxi-
mum permissible inflation pressure for that
tire.
Maximum loaded vehicle weight
means t he sum of:
(a) Curb weight
(b) Accessory weight
(c) Vehicle capacity weight, and
(d) Production opt ions weight
Maximum (permissible) inflation pressure
means t he maximum cold inflation pressure
to which a tire may be inflated . Also called
"maxim um inflat ion pressu re."
Normal occupant weight
means 150 lbs. (68 kilograms) times the
number of occupants seated in the vehicle up
to the tota l seating capacity of your vehicle.
Occupant distribution
means dist ribution of occupants in a vehicle.
Outer diameter
means t he overall diamete r of an inflated new
tire.
Overall width
means the linear distance between the exter i-
ors of the sidewalls of an inflated t ire, includ-
ing elevations due to labeli ng, decorations, or
protectiv e bands or ribs.
Ply
means a layer of rubber-coated para llel cords.
Production options weight
means the combined weight of tho se install ed
regular production opt ions weighing over 5
lbs. (2.3 kg) in excess of those stan dard item s
which they replace, not previously considered
in curb weight or accessory weight, including
heavy duty brakes, ride levelers, roof rack,
heavy duty battery, and special tr im.
Radial ply tire
means a pneumat ic tire in which the ply cords
t hat exte nd to the beads are laid at substa n-
t ially 90 deg rees to the center line of the
tread .
Recommended inflation pressure
see <=> page 2 35, Cold tire inflation pressure.
Reinforced tire
means a t ire design to operat e at higher loads
and at higher inflation pressures than t he cor-
respondi ng standard tire. Reinforced tires
may be ident ified as "XL" "xl" "EXTRA LOAD"

or "RF" on the sidewa ll.
Rim
means a metal support for a ti re or a tire and
tube assembly upon which t he tire beads are
seat ed.
Rim diameter
means nom inal diameter of the bead seat. If
you change your wheel size, you will have to
purchase new ti res to match the new rim di-
ameter.
Rim size designation
means rim diameter and width .
Rim width
means nominal distance between rim flanges .
Sidewall
means t hat portion of a tire betwee n the
t rea d and bead.
