Overview

This document is the Operator's Manual for the Bad Boy 25" Push Mower, Model BB25 - Kawasaki. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, assembly, and maintenance of the lawn mower.

Function Description:

The Bad Boy 25" Push Mower is a walk-behind lawn mower designed for cutting grass. It features a Kawasaki engine and a Blade Brake Clutch (BBC) system for engaging and disengaging the blade. The mower is capable of operating in two modes: with a grass catcher for collecting clippings or with a mulch plug installed for mulching. It is designed for use by competent adults who have read and understood the manual. The mower's drive system includes a two-speed transmission (LO and HI) and an adjustable belt drive from the engine to the transmission, allowing for different walking speeds.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: BB25 - Kawasaki
  • Engine: Kawasaki (specific model not detailed in the manual, but an Owner's Manual for the engine is included separately).
  • Engine Oil: SAE 10W-30.
    • Fill volume (without oil filter change): 22 Fl.Oz (0.7 Qt. - 0.65 Liters).
    • Fill volume (with oil filter change): 29 Fl.Oz (0.9 Qt - 0.85 Liters).
  • Fuel: 87 octane or higher gasoline. The engine will not operate on gasoline marketed as E-85 (85% ethanol).
    • Maximum fuel tank fill volume: 1.9 Qt (1.8 Liter).
  • Engine Speed (no load): Approximately 3600 RPM at full throttle.
  • Transmission Speeds:
    • HI speed: Approximately 4mph (fast walking speed).
    • LO speed: Approximately 3mph (average walking speed).
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: Individual wheel adjustment from 1 inch (25mm) to 4.5 inches (114mm) in 7 steps (1/2" or 13mm increments).
  • Blade Tightening Torque: 30 to 35 ft. lbs. (40 to 45 Nm).
  • BBC Cable Spring Tension (without tension): Approximately 2 inches (51 mm).
  • BBC Cable Spring Tension (engaged): Approximately 2 5/16" (58 mm) to 2 7/16" (62 mm).

Usage Features:

  • Safety First: Emphasizes reading and understanding all instructions, including the engine's Owner's Manual, before operation. Warns against careless or improper use, which can lead to serious injury or death.
  • Personal Safety Equipment: Recommends wearing hearing protection, eye protection, protective gloves, and protective shoes.
  • Operator Competence: Only competent adults familiar with the instructions should operate the mower.
  • Area Clearance: Clear the area of objects (rocks, wire, toys) before mowing. Ensure the area is clear of other people and bystanders.
  • Blade Control (BBC): A multi-step process to engage the blade. The engine must be started and warmed up, throttle set to "Full Throttle," then the lock for the upper control bar is pushed, and the upper control bar is pushed down until it rests on the handlebar. The blade should stop within 3 seconds when the upper control bar is released. A BBC Function Test is recommended before each use.
  • Starting the Engine: Use the "Choke" position for a cold engine; not necessary for a warm engine. Always use "Full Throttle" for best mowing performance.
  • Drive Control: The mower has a two-speed transmission (LO/HI) and a neutral (N) position. The drive system is engaged by pulling up on the lower control bar.
  • Slope Operation: Mow across the face of slopes, never up and down. Exercise extreme caution on slopes and avoid wet or excessively steep slopes.
  • Fuel Handling: Strict precautions for handling gasoline due to its flammability and explosive vapors. Includes instructions on refueling, storage, and spill management.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: Each wheel can be adjusted individually. Front adjusters raise height when moved forward; rear adjusters raise height when moved backward. Adjust both front and rear to the same position for best results. Crucially, never readjust cutting height while the engine is running.
  • Modes of Operation: Can be used with a grass catcher (ensure it's in good condition) or a mulch plug (ensure the rear door closes completely). Never operate without the mulch plug or grass catcher in place.

Maintenance Features:

  • Maintenance Schedule: A detailed schedule is provided, assuming daily use by a landscape company (15-20 days per month).
    • Before each use: Check engine oil, BBC control system, blade, cables, grass catcher, loose/missing parts, and clean under the deck.
    • First 20 Hours or Within 4 weeks: Change engine oil, check throttle cable adjustment.
    • Every 50 Hours or every 2 months: Lubricate pivot arms, check BBC cable function/adjustment, check/clean engine air filter.
    • Every 100 Hours or every 4 months: Change engine oil (more often in dusty conditions), check spark plug, clean engine with compressed air.
    • Every 200 Hours or every 8 months: Replace paper air filter (more frequently in dusty conditions), replace spark plug, adjust valve clearance.
  • Engine Owner's Manual: Emphasizes following the maintenance schedule and instructions in the separate Kawasaki Owner's Manual.
  • Cleaning the Mower: Recommends scraping off grass and trash from the underside. Cleaning the engine exterior with compressed air. Washing the grass bag frequently. Does not recommend using a garden hose or pressure washer to clean the mower due to potential corrosion and damage to bearings/engine parts.
  • Blade Maintenance:
    • Sharpening: File the top side of the blade, maintaining the original angle and radius. Remove equal material from both ends to ensure balance. A blade balancing device is recommended.
    • Replacement: Replace bent, damaged, or worn blades immediately. Only use Bad Boy Mowers approved replacement blades.
    • Removal/Installation: Involves disconnecting the spark plug wire, tipping the mower on its right side (air filter and carburetor up), using a wood block to prevent blade rotation, and tightening bolts to specified torque.
  • Oil Change: Instructions for draining old oil and refilling with new SAE 10W-30 oil. Requires disconnecting the spark plug wire and tipping the mower. Never overfill.
  • Blade Brake Clutch (BBC) Cable Adjustment: Recommended check every 50 hours or 4 weeks. Involves removing the belt guard, checking spring tension (both relaxed and engaged), and adjusting the cable nuts if necessary.
  • Storage: Instructions for safe storage of the machine and fuel containers, away from open flames or ignition sources.
  • Warranty: A detailed warranty statement is included, covering the BB25 Mower for 1 year (standard) or 60 days (replacement parts). It outlines what is covered, what is not (e.g., normal wear items, engine/drive systems by third parties), exceptions, limitations, customer responsibilities, and the procedure to obtain warranty consideration. Product registration is crucial for warranty.
