Do you have a question about the bamar MEJ 2.02 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Bamar MEJ 2.02 is an electric foresail furling and reefing system designed for cruising boats. It is suitable for vessels between 54 and 72 feet in length, with a sail area ranging from 120 to 160 square meters. The system is manufactured by A.R.TE. srl in Forlì, Italy, and is certified according to the CE Machinery Directive.

Function Description

The MEJ 2.02 system automates the furling and reefing of the foresail, enhancing ease of use and safety during sailing. It consists of a motorization unit, a series of aluminum foils that house the forestay, and a halyard swivel. The motorization unit drives the rotation of the foils, which in turn furl or unfurl the sail. The system is designed for installation with either a grounded stay or on an armed mast.

Important Technical Specifications

The MEJ 2.02 is available in three models, corresponding to different rod/wire diameters and sail areas:

  • MEJ 2.02-14-52: For 14mm 1x19 wire, max sail area 120 sq.m, max LFT 18m. Uses BMG 52 foils (43x52mm section, Ø6mm sail groove, 3mm gap).
  • MEJ 2.02-16-60: For 16mm 1x19 wire, max sail area 140 sq.m, max LFT 20m. Uses BMG 60 foils (50x60mm section, Ø8mm sail groove, 3mm gap).
  • MEJ 2.02-19-70: For 19mm 1x19 wire, max sail area 160 sq.m, max LFT 22m. Uses BMG 70 foils (60x70mm section, Ø8mm sail groove, 3mm gap).

Motorization Technical Characteristics (common to all models):

  • Electric motor power: 900 W
  • Max foil speed: 40 RPM
  • Electric supply: 24 V
  • Nominal absorption: 45 A
  • Use with reefed sail: Yes
  • Max torque (peak) on foil: 240 Nm
  • Service: S2-20' (short-time duty, 20 minutes)

Physical Dimensions (Motorization box):

  • A: 31 cm (12.20 inch)
  • B: 31 cm (12.20 inch)
  • C: 101 cm (39.80 inch)
  • Weight: 23 kg (50.70 lb)

Physical Dimensions (Foil package):

  • A: 35 cm (13.78 inch)
  • B: 40 cm (15.75 inch)
  • C: 162 cm (63.78 inch)
  • D: 20 cm (7.87 inch)
  • Weight: Varies depending on quantity and length of foils.

Swivel Max Working Load:

  • MEJ 2.02-14-52: 3300 kg
  • MEJ 2.02-16-60: 4200 kg
  • MEJ 2.02-19-70: 6000 kg

Usage Features

The MEJ 2.02 is designed for straightforward operation. To open the sail, the user presses the "open sail" switch and pulls the genoa sheet. To furl the sail, the genoa sheet is slacked with a slight drag, and the "close sail" switch is pressed. For reefing, the genoa traveler should be moved forward at each stage to maintain the correct sheeting angle.

Safety Precautions:

  • The halyard swivel must never touch the blocking ring of the terminal foil when the sail is hoisted, as this could damage the splice pieces/connectors.
  • The forestay must always be tightened when furling and unfurling, adjusting its tension along with the backstay's tension if necessary.
  • The electric wiring must be carried out by skilled personnel, ensuring the boat's voltage is compatible with the furler components.

Manual Emergency Clutch: In case of electric failure, the furler can be operated manually. This involves removing a protection cap, inserting a handle (winch handle, articulated handle, or drill adapter), and rotating it clockwise or anti-clockwise to furl or unfurl the sail. Before manual operation, the electric supply must be cut, and all electric commands inhibited.

Sail Recommendations:

  • If using multiple sails, they should all have the same hoisting length to maintain a 10-degree angle between the halyard and stay when the halyard swivel is at the correct height.
  • Sailmakers should account for permanent stretch in sails when determining luff length. A distance of 5-10 cm between the top edge of the halyard swivel and the top end of the extrusions is recommended to prevent over-tensioning.

Maintenance Features

The MEJ 2.02 is constructed with corrosion-proof materials to ensure durability in marine environments. Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity.

Short Inactivity (weekly):

  • Wash and rinse the furler thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt crystals from its surface.
  • Pay particular attention to cleaning the lower section, including the motorization unit and the halyard swivel.

Long Inactivity (for long storage periods):

  • Perform the same washing and rinsing as for short inactivity.
  • Protect the furler with specific lubricant products, especially on rotating and sliding parts (motorization, halyard swivel).
  • Cover the entire system with a strong nylon foil or oilcloth.

Drive Belt Replacement: The manual provides detailed instructions for replacing the drive belt, including:

  1. Removing the protection cap and cover.
  2. Loosening the eccentric pin to release the belt.
  3. Replacing the belt and adjusting its tension (maximum depression of 2.5 mm with a 15 kg load).
  4. Cleaning surfaces and applying sealing liquid before reassembling.

Main Drive Belt Sheave Replacement: Instructions are also provided for replacing the main drive belt sheave, which involves:

  1. Opening the cover and removing the eccentric pin and drive belt.
  2. Unscrewing the Allen screw holding the sheave.
  3. Using screwdrivers to carefully remove the sheave.
  4. Fitting the new sheave, ensuring its height aligns with the drive sheave.
  5. Reassembling the components, applying sealing liquid, and checking belt tension.

Electric Motor Replacement: The manual outlines the procedure for replacing the electric motor, which includes:

  1. Removing covers from both the motor and transmission sides.
  2. Disassembling the drive belt, eccentric pin, and lower sheave.
  3. Unscrewing the motor's fixing screws and disconnecting the fair-lead.
  4. Carefully removing the motor, avoiding damage to electric cables.
  5. Installing the new motor and reassembling in reverse order, ensuring proper belt tension and sealing.

Spare Parts: Original spare parts are essential for maintaining the furler's efficiency. The warranty is void if non-original components are used. A detailed list of spare parts with corresponding codes for different models (Ø14, Ø16, Ø19) is provided, covering components such as tack adapters, drive belts, bearings, motorization parts, foils, and various connectors and fasteners.
