Overview

This document is an owner's manual and safety instructions for the Bauer 16" 14.5 AMP Electric Chainsaw, model 20112E-B.

Function Description:

The Bauer 16" 14.5 AMP Electric Chainsaw is designed for cutting small logs and lighter weight trimming jobs. It is a mains-operated (corded) power tool intended for wood cutting only. The manual emphasizes that it should not be used for cutting plastic, masonry, or non-wood building materials.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Rating: 120 VAC / 60 Hz / 14.5A
  • Motor Speed: 5800 RPM (No Load)
  • Lubrication Type: Bar and chain oil
  • Lubrication Capacity: 6.8 fl oz (200 ml) (200 ml)
  • Cutting Attachment:
    • 16" Sprocket Nose Chain Guide Bar
    • Low-Kickback Full Skip Chain
    • Pitch: 3/8"
    • Gauge: 0.050"
    • of links: 57

The manual includes a "Recommended Minimum Wire Gauge for Extension Cords" table, indicating the appropriate gauge based on nameplate amperes (at full load) and extension cord length (25', 50', 75', 100', 150'). For example, for 0-2.0 amperes, an 18 gauge cord is recommended for lengths up to 100', and a 16 gauge for 150'. For 16.1-20.0 amperes, a 12 gauge is needed for 25' and a 10 gauge for 50' and 75'.

Usage Features:

The chainsaw is equipped with several safety features and operational guidelines:

  • Safety Devices:
    • Hand Guard: Protects the hand on the Front Handle from the Saw Chain.
    • Chain Brake: A mechanical braking device that quickly stops the Chainsaw and Chain in the event of kickback. It activates when the operator's hand strikes the Hand Guard / Chain Brake Lever and pushes it forward.
    • Trigger Lockout: A movable stop that prevents unintentional operation of the Trigger until manually activated.
    • Low-Kickback Chain: Complies with kickback performance requirements of ANSI B175.1-1991.
  • Operation:
    • Starting: Ensure the Trigger is in the off-position before connecting to the power source. To start, push the Trigger Lockout button completely in, then squeeze and hold the Trigger. Releasing the Trigger stops the motor.
    • Grip: Always hold the chain saw with both hands, with the right hand on the rear handle and the left hand on the front handle, thumbs and fingers encircling the handles.
    • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean, well lit, and free from children and bystanders. Avoid operating in explosive atmospheres. Route extension cords safely, securing them with the Power Cord Clip to prevent tension. Ensure no utility lines or other hazards are nearby.
    • Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Use extension cords suitable for outdoor use when operating outdoors. If operating in a damp location, use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected supply.
    • Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip, do not overreach, and do not cut above shoulder height. Use only manufacturer-specified replacement bars and chains. Follow sharpening and maintenance instructions. Avoid guide bar tip contact with objects and pinching the saw chain in the cut.
    • Felling a Tree: Plan an escape path diagonally to the rear of the expected line of fall. Consider natural lean, branch location, and wind direction. Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, staples, and wire from the tree. Make a notching undercut (1/3 diameter) and a felling back cut (at least 2 inches higher than the notching cut) to create a hinge.
    • Limbing a Tree: Remove branches from a fallen tree, leaving larger lower limbs for support. Cut small limbs in one cut. Cut branches under tension from the bottom up.
    • Bucking a Log: Ensure firm footing and even weight distribution. Support the log with limbs, logs, or chocks when possible. For logs supported along their entire length, cut from the top (overbuck). For logs supported on one end, cut 1/3 diameter from the underside (underbuck) then overbuck to meet the first cut. For logs supported on both ends, cut 1/3 diameter from the top (overbuck) then underbuck the lower 2/3 to meet the first cut. When bucking on a slope, stand on the uphill side of the log.
  • Personal Safety: Stay alert, wear eye protection (ANSI-approved) and hearing protection. Further protective equipment for head, hands, legs, and feet is recommended. Do not operate while tired or under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Dress properly, keeping loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair away from moving parts.

Maintenance Features:

  • Before Each Use:
    • Inspect the general condition of the tool (loose hardware, misalignment, binding parts, damaged cord, cracked parts, dull/damaged saw chain, etc.).
    • Fill the oil reservoir with bar and chain oil.
    • Check Saw Chain tension. New Saw Chains often need tensioning several times during first use.
  • Periodic Maintenance (or when replacing Saw Chain):
    • Clean and lubricate the Chain Guide Bar and turn it over to distribute wear. Remount the Bar Support Plate to the other side of the Guide Bar.
    • Deburr Guide Bar rails as needed using a flat file.
    • Check the Chain Sprocket for wear or damage.
    • Replace the Chain Guide Bar if worn, bent, or damaged.
  • Monthly Maintenance:
    • Clean the Chain Oil Tank.
  • If Worn or Damaged:
    • Sharpen or replace the Saw Chain. Cutters should be sharpened by a qualified technician when sawdust becomes powder-like, extra force is needed to cut, the saw chain doesn't cut straight, or vibration increases. Replace the Saw Chain only with an identical Saw Chain.
    • Replace the Chain Guide Bar if it becomes worn, bent, or damaged.
  • After Use: Wipe the outside surface of the Chain Saw with a clean, dry cloth. Use mild detergent if necessary; do not use solvents or immerse the tool in liquid. Cover the Chain Guide Bar with the Chain Guide Bar Sheath.
  • Storage: Store the tool indoors, out of children's reach, after it has cooled completely.
  • Service: Have the power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified service technician.
