To access information on the battery status, go to Settings > Power >
Battery. The dialog will display the battery level and the battery capacity.
For service reasons, this dialog also provides protocols for the charging
and discharging cycles.
1. The battery level is displayed in percentage terms. The value
drops when in use and rises while being charged. The information
provided here is the same as that provided when you double tap
system key S3 (Braille Notetaker mode) or pressing S2+B9 (Braille
Display mode).
2. The capacity is also given in mAh, and provides information on the
battery capacity. It is not a constant value as the capacity changes
according to temperature and the age of the battery.
3. The “Write Protocol File” checkbox allows the behavior of the
battery to be monitored during the charging and discharging
cycles, and allows the file to be written as an “acculog.txt” file. This
should only be done when consulting with BAUM service
technicians on servicing issues.
The battery of VarioUltra passes 2 limits during charging and
discharging.
1. From a fully charged battery the first limit is announced at 0%, and
the device turns off. At this point you should connect to a power
supply to switch on and use VarioUltra.
2. If you ignore this, the battery passes the 2
nd
limit, which means
even when you connect to power supply you cannot immediately
switch on the device.
If VarioUltra is in use while connected to a USB power source, or USB
device, trickle charging of the battery will take place. Note that trickle
charging is slower to charge the battery than if VarioUltra were switched
off, and charging.
When VarioUltra is switched off and charging, progress of the charging
process will be indicated on the braille display. As charging takes place,
cells will gradually fill in from left to right, with the next empty cell
displaying a flashing cursor, using dots 7 and 8.
o If all cells on your VarioUltra braille display are filled in, showing
dots 1 through 8 on every cell, this means your device is 100%
charged.
o If half the braille line is filled (from cell 1 to the middle), your device
is approximately 50% charged.
o Use best judgement to gauge the approximate charge percentage
based on the number of cells displayed.
