Overview

This document provides user and installation instructions for the BAXI 14Fi AM Blue and 17Fi AM Blue water heaters, which are manufactured in Italy. The manual covers quick-start guidance, detailed descriptions of the appliance, installation procedures, and maintenance information.

Function Description

The BAXI 14Fi AM Blue and 17Fi AM Blue are gas-fired instantaneous water heaters designed for the production of domestic hot water. These appliances are manufactured in accordance with European Directives, including the Regulation Gas Appliance (UE) 2016/426, Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/UE, Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 2014/30/UE, and Ecodesign Directive for energy-related products 2009/125/EC. They comply with European Standard EN 26:2015 for gas-fired instantaneous water heaters.

The water heaters utilize a special burner design that cools the flame and checks the airflow necessary for combustion. This "cooled flames" setup avoids thermal efficiency loss and generates optimal combustion with low emissions, specifically reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions. NOx refers to Nitrogen monoxide (NO), which is not harmful to humans, and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which is very harmful to humans and the environment. The water inside the water heater is heated by a heat exchanger before reaching the burner, which then cools the flame.

The appliance features a control panel with a display and a control knob for water temperature adjustment. It includes a button for power on/off and reset functions. The display provides information such as fault presence, flame presence, hot water request in progress, set point temperature, remote control connection status (for external models), and solar system connection status.

Usage Features

The water heater offers straightforward operation. To power on the appliance, the user simply presses the power on button. Water temperature can be adjusted by turning the control knob: turning it to the right increases the temperature, while turning it to the left decreases it. The temperature range is between 37 and 60°C. For daily use, it is recommended to set the temperature at a value not exceeding 50°C to prevent severe burns and reduce gas consumption and limescale formation.

To power off the appliance, the user presses and holds the on/off button for approximately 5 seconds until symbols begin to flash on the display. Releasing the button puts the appliance in an OFF state, indicated by specific symbols on the display.

In case of a fault, the appliance may shut down. The display will show "AL" followed by a fault code. There are two types of shutdowns: temporary and permanent. Temporary shutdowns are automatically removed once the problem is resolved. Permanent shutdowns (locks) require a manual reset by pressing and holding the reset button until specific wording appears on the display. The manual lists various alarm types and their corresponding solutions, often involving pressing the reset button or seeking assistance from a qualified technician.

The appliance also features a "SERVICE MENU" that allows access to and modification of operational parameters. This menu can be accessed by holding down the reset button for about 10 seconds. Within this menu, users or technicians can adjust parameters such as gas type (methane or LPG), DHW off mode, ignition power, ignition curve, LPG gas type (propane or butane), and domestic hot water modulation with a flow meter. A calibration menu is also available for pressure adjustments, which must be performed by a qualified technician. An "Alarm history menu" allows viewing the last 10 errors that occurred, and an "Info menu" displays software version, current hot water temperature, and hot water quantity.

Safety is a key aspect of the appliance's design and usage. Users are warned about the risk of severe burns from hot water exceeding 50°C and are advised to test water temperature before use. The appliance should not be used for purposes other than its intended function. It is crucial not to cover the inlet or dissipation grids and ventilation shaft. In case of a gas smell, electrical switches or telephones should not be used, and the area should be ventilated, and the main gas valve closed. Flammable substances or objects should not be placed on or near the appliance. The use of the appliance by children or inexperienced persons is not recommended.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the correct, continuous, and reliable operation of the water heater and to preserve its life and efficiency. The manufacturer recommends performing maintenance at least once a year, scheduling it with the Technical Support Centre to avoid wasting time and money. All installation, service, and maintenance interventions must be performed by qualified personnel in compliance with current legislation. Failure to comply with the recommendations in the user manual or instructions from installers will invalidate any warranty claims.

The manual outlines several maintenance procedures:

  • External cleaning: Periodic cleaning of the external panels with soapy water protects the panelling from corrosion. Solvents, powders, abrasive sponges, or flammable substances should not be used for cleaning.
  • Dismantling the casing: The casing can be removed by unscrewing fastening screws at the bottom and detaching it from the top.
  • Accessibility to the electronic board: After removing the casing, the panel securing the electronic board can be unscrewed, and connectors disconnected.
  • Removing the gas valve: This involves removing the casing, unscrewing the panel from the bottom shelf, and disconnecting the gas valve from its retaining screws and the gas pipe nut.
  • Removing the fan: The fan's fixing screws can be unscrewed, and the fan slid out after freeing it from its hooks.
  • Removing the burner: This involves removing a clip, disconnecting the cold water pipe and two gas pipes, turning screws, lowering a plate, unscrewing a nut, and extracting the hot water outlet pipe before removing the burner.
  • Dismantling the heat exchanger: After removing the casing and burner, the cold water inlet pipe is disconnected, and the fixing screws of the heat exchanger are removed.
  • Replacement of the electrode: After replacing the electrode, it is crucial to ensure the distance between the electrode and the burner is 6.5 mm (with a tolerance of 6.0-7.0 mm).

Before any work on the electrical equipment, the 230V voltage must always be disconnected. Similarly, before carrying out any cleaning or maintenance, the appliance should be switched off using the omni-polar switch on the power supply line, and the gas and water valves should be closed.

The appliance is designed to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way at the end of its serviceable life, through separate collection and recycling, to avoid negative environmental and health impacts and allow for material recovery.
