For connection of balanced and
unbalanced plugs, ring and sleeve have
to be bridged at the stereo plug.

Most headphones come with their cable and plug already assembled but if you have to do it yourself sometime
this is how. It is also possible in a crisis situation to tap this signal for use as a (parallel) feed for a line level
device.
