Overview

This document is an instruction manual for a Beko Fridge-Freezer, model CSTM3546W. It provides comprehensive information on the appliance's operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Beko Fridge-Freezer is designed for the storage of edible foodstuffs. It features a fridge compartment for short-term storage of fresh food and drinks, and a freezer compartment rated **** for freezing and storing pre-frozen food. The appliance utilizes R600a, an environmentally friendly refrigerant, and cyclopentane for insulation.

Important Technical Specifications

The appliance is designed to operate in ambient temperatures between +10°C (50°F) and +38°C (100°F). Operating outside this range, particularly in unheated or cold rooms, may impair performance and reduce the storage time of frozen food. The freezer has a specific freezing capacity, which should not be exceeded within a 24-hour period to ensure optimal food quality. The appliance is equipped with a 13A fuse in its moulded plug, requiring an ASTA approved BS 1362 fuse for replacement. The internal light is either a bulb or an LED, intended for illuminating the refrigerator/freezer compartments, and is designed to withstand extreme physical conditions, including temperatures below -20°C.

Usage Features

  • Temperature Adjustment: The operating temperatures are controlled by a thermostat knob, with settings ranging from 1 to 5 (coldest). The recommended average temperature inside the fridge is +5°C (41°F). Users are advised to set the thermostat midway initially and monitor the temperature with an accurate thermometer to ensure desired storage temperatures are maintained. Frequent door openings can cause internal temperatures to rise, so prompt closing is recommended.
  • Storing Frozen Food: The freezer is suitable for long-term storage of commercially frozen foods and for freezing fresh food. In case of a power failure, the door should remain closed. Frozen food should not be affected if the failure lasts less than 13 hours; for longer durations, food should be checked and either consumed immediately or cooked and re-frozen.
  • Freezing Fresh Food: To achieve the best results, users should avoid freezing large quantities at once, as rapid freezing to the core preserves food quality. The appliance's freezing capacity should not be exceeded within 24 hours. When freezing fresh food, the thermostat knob should be at a medium position. Small quantities (up to 1/2 kg) can be frozen without adjusting the temperature control. Care must be taken not to mix already frozen food with fresh food.
  • Making Ice Cubes: Ice cube trays should be filled 3/4 full with water and placed in the Ice Bank. Frozen trays can be loosened with a spoon handle; sharp objects like knives or forks should not be used. Ice cubes stored for several weeks may reduce in size and disappear.
  • Door Reversing: The manual provides detailed instructions for reversing the doors, which may require assistance. This involves switching off the appliance, removing loose items, detaching hinges, repositioning plugs and bushings, and reattaching the doors. After reversal, the appliance should stand for at least 4 hours before switching on.
  • Food Arrangement: The manual suggests an arrangement for food storage within the fridge and freezer compartments to optimize hygiene and results. This includes storing cooked dishes in airtight containers, fresh produce on shelves, fruits and vegetables in crisper bins, and raw meat on the lowest shelf, wrapped to prevent contamination. Hot food and beverages should be cooled before placing them in the fridge. Explosive substances and high-proof alcohol should be stored upright in sealed containers. Fizzy drinks should not be frozen. Certain fruits and vegetables sensitive to cold (e.g., pineapples, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes) should be wrapped in polythene bags. Frozen food should be thawed slowly in the fridge compartment to prevent cross-contamination. All food should be wrapped in suitable packaging material.

Maintenance Features

  • Defrosting (Fridge Compartment): The fridge compartment defrosts automatically. Defrost water drains via a collection container at the back of the appliance. Water droplets may form and refreeze on the liner; sharp objects should not be used to remove them. If the drain tube is blocked by food particles, it can be cleared with a pipe-cleaner or the provided plastic plunger. The drain tube must be correctly positioned in the collecting tray above the compressor to prevent water spillage. If the frost layer exceeds 1/4” (7 mm), the thermostat setting should be reduced to restart automatic defrosting.
  • Defrosting (Freezer Compartment): The freezer compartment should be defrosted at least twice a year or when the ice layer becomes too thick. Before defrosting, the thermostat knob should be set to the highest position to make food colder. The appliance should be unplugged, and frozen food removed, wrapped, and placed in a cool area. The door should be left open for quick defrosting, and vessels with warm water (max. 80°C) can be placed inside. Ice build-up is a normal phenomenon, influenced by ambient conditions and door opening frequency. Defrosting is advisable when the quantity of food is minimal.
  • Cleaning and Care: The appliance should be switched off and unplugged before cleaning. Sharp instruments, abrasive substances, soap, household cleaner, detergent, or wax polish should not be used. The cabinet should be cleaned with lukewarm water and wiped dry. The interior should be cleaned with a damp cloth wrung out in a solution of one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to one pint of water, then wiped dry. Care should be taken to prevent water from entering the temperature control box. If the appliance will not be used for an extended period, it should be switched off, emptied, cleaned, and the door left ajar. Dust on the condenser at the back should be removed annually with a vacuum cleaner. Door seals should be checked regularly for cleanliness and absence of food particles. Petroleum-based products, high temperatures, or abrasive materials should not be used for cleaning. Door trays can be removed by pushing them upwards from the base. The special plastic drain tray at the back should be kept clean; it can be removed by pushing down a lug with a screwdriver and pulling it out. Excess ice should be removed regularly with a plastic scraper to prevent impaired freezer performance. Drawers can be removed by pulling them out, tilting upwards, and then pulling them completely.
  • Replacing Interior Light Bulb: For bulb/LED replacement, users should contact an Authorised Service. The lamp is specifically designed for appliance illumination and is not suitable for general household room lighting.

Energy Saving Tips

  • The appliance should be installed in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
  • Ensure the ambient temperature is within the recommended range (+10°C to +38°C).
  • Maintain correct temperatures in both compartments by checking with an accurate thermometer and adjusting the thermostat setting.
  • Ensure sufficient room for air circulation around the appliance.
  • Minimize door openings and ensure doors are closed promptly after use.
  • Do not load the appliance immediately after switching on; wait until the correct storage temperature is reached.
  • Do not place hot food or beverages directly into the fridge.
  • Do not leave frozen food at room temperature to thaw.
  • Defrost the freezer compartment when the ice layer is too thick.
  • Store commercially frozen food according to package instructions.
  • Choose high-quality fresh food and clean it thoroughly before freezing.
  • Prepare fresh food in small portions for rapid freezing.
  • Wrap all food in aluminum foil or freezer-quality polythene bags, ensuring air is excluded.
  • Place chilled cooked food near the cold wall of the fridge liner.
  • Do not store explosive substances or high-proof alcohol in unsealed containers.
  • Avoid freezing fizzy drinks or consuming flavored water ices when too cold.
  • Wrap pineapples, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, and similar produce in polythene bags if stored near 0°C.

Problem Solving

The manual includes a problem-solving section for common issues:

  • Plug not inserted correctly: Check the power supply and plug connection.
